So on the one hand you are trying to get the best return, on the other hand you accuse those who are doing the same of greed. Didn't realise there was a cut off point Wacko

Hey muss.....

I haven’t been on a plane in about 18 years - or a cruise liner. I’ve seen what I’ve wanted to see and am happy now in my little, lakeside village.

I still work a pretty physical job 5 days a week. Not because I need to (with creative accounting I could retire on near enough a full pension) but because I really, really love what I’m doing.

My goal in life was never to be rich, just comfortable where I could do what I enjoy doing.

What do you mean by full pension, equivalent to what you currently earn?

Gee FF wish we were all like that.  Greed is killing the country at the moment.  Rents are high because housing costs are high.  But then my sister and brother in law have a house up at south west rocks they rent out.  Only a two bedder and where they will eventually live when it gets too built up around their home now.

They have the rent cover their costs as it his his super.  But the agent keeps trying to put the rent up.  They say we don't need to do that it's covering the cost now and the agent doesn't seem to understand!  There are houses out there already paid off who have rent increases going on.  No need but it seems to happen.

I went overseas in the 70's. Hated it then, have not been on an overseas holiday since. Hate even flying within Australia for a holiday, unfortunately feel obliged to do it sometimes.

Well I'm flying to Broome in June.  That's further than NZ from here.  Long day both ways.

When I was working full-time...sixteen hours a day, six and a half days a week...I would go on holiday every three months to make up for the weekend time I lost to my job.

We went mostly in Australia, initially, because certain family members were not keen on flying. So, train travel or car was the go.

I love flying. Would far rather get to where I'm going in as short a time as possible, than have an endless road trip.

I’m paid bugger all as an hourly rate at the moment. About $31/hour and I couldn’t care less. I’d probably do it for nothing.

If I retired I could get the full pension (with creative accounting) and a super top up would easily get me to what I earn today. Enough to be very comfortable.

I’m not working for the money (it buys me durries, Coopers and some red wine).

I’m working because when I walk into the big barn in the morning where we have our Premier Sale yearlings boxed…I just feel…happier than I’ve ever been.

We’ve got one colt out of a mare called Anuddawinna whose nickname is “Maggie”.

You should see the young kids’ faces who work with me when I feed Maggie and I do a full throated, Rod Stewart-like rendition of Maggie May. They think I’m meshugana 😂

(Me at 7.30am most mornings)…

Wake up Maggie I think I’ve got something to give to you…

He looks at me, nods and as I go into the box tries to take my cap off. Just a game we have.

It took me until I was nearly forty to realise those non-flyers in the family were holding me back. I took off to America with my niece and we just meandered around the country by Greyhound bus, soaking up all the wonderful vistas while I researched my first book. Great memories.

I feel sorry for people who never want to see the world outside of Australia.

I've been to six countries since that time...and it has opened my eyes to how the world operates.

Don't feel too bad FF.  I think the industry as a whole pays badly.  The highest hourly rate I've even got is $30 and that's only in the past few years.  I'm just happy I can also do a job I love instead of something which would eat my soul.

Furious I agree.

In my autumn years I’m lucky enough now to do what I want to do.

sleeping in hotel or airb&b beds is gross when you think about. Even in clean establishments.
It definitely hits differently when you realize you're basically "co-sleeping" with thousands of strangers over time. Even with high-end laundering, the
"sanitized but used" vibe is hard to shake once the thought takes root.
If you want to reclaim your peace of mind, here are the three most common ways people deal with the "ick" factor:
  • The Travel Liner: A silk or cotton "sleeping bag" liner that acts as a physical barrier between you and the hotel linens.
  • The Pillowcase Swap: Bringing your own pillowcase is the easiest way to ensure your face only touches your own laundry.
  • The Inspection: Doing a quick check under the mattress protector for a bed bug or hygiene reality check before unpacking.
Manners are of more importance than laws

 Seriously, Tlaz...are you neurotic?

I've slept in so many hotel beds...in the hundreds...

And never come away thinking I've been infected with anything.

This doesn't have a sea view and is anything but great.  Small brick house and nowhere near that amount in worth.  But they love the Rocks.

Story in todays Age that some apartments in melbourne's SE suburbs are being sold at a loss. Seems no  property boom here any more, must be a shortage of immigrants.

Heard a rumour that Vic State govt is requiring developers to offer 20 year leases on the social housing component of certain high rise developments. Apparently developers not keen. Can't imagine why.

I stroll past public housing on the way to Coogee....at all times of the day. Quite nice complex. No probs. I'm still alive.

I stroll past public housing at Hillsdale when I visit my daughter...at all times of the day and night. Never been accosted.

Used to go past housing at Maroubra Beach...and all the way up to Anzac Parade. Never been assaulted or even heard anything going on.

I used to stroll past housing in Macpherson Street, Bronte...yes...Bronte...at all times of the day. Nice new apartments in a fresh complex.

Never been mugged. Never had anything weird happen to me. Had some people stop and chat to me. They were nice people.

Nada, the Aboriginal woman who was one of the stolen generation. Lovely lady. I always say 'hello' to her when I pass her home. Haven't seen her for a bit. Hope she is well.

Shaun, the Souths supporter. The daughter said she saw him still going along with his walker at the shopping centre. Can be a bit touchy, but totally harmless.

Maria, who works at Randwick Hospital. She always greets me with a huge smile and asks how I'm doing. She's from Argentina. Been in housing, she tells me, since her husband got seriously ill.

Take off your biased blinkers. Not everyone in housing is a drug-user or a loser. They are just humans who have not had fortunate lives.

I used to collect for the Red Cross. I went to both private homes and housing complexes.

There were always excuses from the people in private homes why they couldn't donate.

In the housing complexes, they gave money readily for a cause.

I know who has more humanity...
