Thought this might be a bit of light hearted discussion.

How does everyone else approach their yard maintenance in this fine village?

I like to mow regularly, particularly this time if year when the rain is about and the heat makes it grow quicker, I feel like the work-load is actually reduced by mowing more regularly rather than allowing it to get a bit of length, less empties for the catcher, less work for me!

Whipper snip garden edges, spray the perimeter fence and the perimeter of the house, tank and sheds.

No fertilising of the lawn for me, although luckily the house already had a good lawn when we purchased, nice and thick so weeds find it hard to get through it as well, water the back with a sprinkler setup as its nice to sit out there and enjoy the green but the front is left to its own devices there.

My old man subscribes to a theory that no organic matter should leave the house yard but I don't follow that one, I'd have my gardens fully mulched in about 3 mows and have a yard full of compost if I tried that! LOL

I normally mow fortnightly in summer. We had such a dry spring here in brisbane and now a deluge in the last few weeks so it has made things a bit difficult
I'm hoping with some regular mowing now the grass will take care of the weeds.

I hate grass.Angry Grass is for cows.Angry I have to mow weekly cos it grows so freakin' fast and if it gets even a little bit high it retains a lot of moisture even after 3 dry days and clogs the bloody chuteAngry of the bloody mowerAngry so that I'm having to empty the catcher when it's only a quarter full, meaning 20 freakin' times emptying the bloody catcher just in the back yard.Angry

I replaced my grass with tiles...when I once had grass.

Got very tired of mowing and snipping.

My husband used to spend hours raking up the leaves on the back lawn of our Sanctuary Point house...only to get up the next day and have to do it again.

We had a huge compost heap.

I don’t get why anyone would buy that plastic rubbish.
Get someone in to mow the lawn, so much better!

I lived in Hurlstone Park for a few years in the 70's. The Lebanese there left a lasting impression with me on yard care. They had it sorted. Concrete from the front fence to the back fence painted green with a concrete tree either side of the painted pathway, with veggies growing on the verge out the front. Something for granny to do.

When there is rain around in summer I mow every 3-4 days, although thankfully with gardens, house, shed and outside entertainment area I've only got around 300m² to cover.

I've already been around it 3 times since the start of the Christmas weekend! Once before Jesus birthday and twice since. LOL

I've got buffalo grass though, it doesn't get much height but its thick and lush so it stalls the mower if you leave it to long, at least it builds up a thirst for a well deserved beer after its done!

Seriously get rid of traditional lawns they are a nuisance and provide nothing ZERO, ZIP for insect and wildlife to use and live in. Plant natives and wild grasses, native clover, all gardens need insect life to flourish for a healthy ecosystem. People with perfectly manicured and sprayed lawns are just preventing nature from doing what its supposed to do. Manicured lawns are for bowls and cricket not gardens.

Mowing the lawn is like a dog chasing its tail, but at least the dog enjoys it.

I can never figure out people who spend hours and hours working on their lawn to have a perfect looking lawn, I'll agree it looks nice but I reckon I could find better things to do with my personal time.

I did yes, for 16 years I had a garden paradise and then we got kicked out and now I'm in an apartment. You wouldn't even believe me if I tried to explain how my garden was, it was a labor of love and learning. When anyone saw it they were always gobsmacked.

It always amuses me , watching some friends of ours.  They spend ages watering their lawn, and then ages mowing it. LOL  When we had that really dry time a few years back, with not a drop of rain for over 6 months, our yard was just brown dust.  Theirs was lush and green, and all the while we were being ask to conserve water. Confused
This fetish of "the perfect lawn" goes too far I think.  As long as its neat and tidy. Mow, snip, give the weeds a spray when they start showing.
However, we have a neighbour bought next door 3 years ago, and nothing has been done in her yard since.  Except for taking a chain saw to the small trees and larger shrubs, getting rid of the shade and some lovely shrubs at the same time. ( All this is still piled up near her front gate, never been got rid of ). The front yard looks just the same as that picture above, or maybe even worse. The problem,   her yard is on the high side of ours, and we are now fighting a never ending battle with all the seeds and weeds coming down into our retaining wall, flower beds, and lawn.  Not forgetting the snakes. But the lizards and frogs love it, so I guess it equals out LOL
animals before people.

My old man was a lawn mower fanatic, drove me insane he did, its a wonder I have any love for the garden at all after the torture he put me through every weekend. he used to make kneel down with scissors and edge the boundary of the lawns, and we had a corner block. Wasn't allowed to go play with friends till it was done. Of course it took all day and i was in tears by the end of it with blisters and sore knees. I hate lawns and all that manicured madness, there are much better ways to have beautiful natural surrounds, ways that take care of themselves if done right, ways so you just tend to it gently, maybe pull a few weeds etc..
