Yes a great instructive article and thanks Gay.  Thumbs Up

As for inhaling (and though the jury's certainly out at this point) suspect there might be other environmental issues at play here leading to a possible sh8t fight regarding mortality insurance.

He's getting that Southern Hemisphere bred stakeswinner this weekend to break his duck.

In all seriousness, a big loss for breeding as he is a proper outcross to most horses.

Thanks for posting the article, Gay.

I knew about Friesians being prone to it, as I used to agist one that was a choker.

And I guessed the relationship between choke and pneumonia so it was good to have it confirmed.

As well as the causes listed in the article, I’ve also been told (by a vet) that conformation/physical issues can be a factor.

I assume that all the well-known preventative measures were taken so I’m wondering … was WB known to have breathing or wind problems?

I don’t want to cast shadows on his death - it’s a huge loss. He’d have had the best 24-hour care and surveillance every day of his life. I’m genuinely curious how this could happen. Guess I’ll never know!

Apparently he has been crook since Thursday. They flew in a vet from Hagyard Equie medical Institute in the US and Also had retired Dr John Freestone on hand.
Apparently Coolmore paid approx A$71 million for him.

2. He's sired approximately 23 stake-winners which is excellent but hardly stellar, however more importantly
3. Two-thirds (15) of the 23 stakes-winners have been Gp1 winners, albeit
4. 80% (12) of the 15 Gp1 winners could only win once at that level.

Just shows you why Gp1 winning progeny are so important in determination of stud fees.

Reminds me a tiny bit of Street Boss in Australia. This bloke has plenty who can't raise a gallop as reflected by his standing on the Sire lists, ie 47th, 71st, 60th, 49th, 40th, 40th, 24th, 15th, 7th and 36th.  Very ordinary indeed, however he too is able to get can get an outstanding one and stands for $66k.

Sorry if there's any errors in the above.

Arion has him at 71 stateswinners and 16 G1 Winners.

Thanks Nobody.  Thumbs Up  Yeah that's right re Gp 1 winners, I double counted a number of them.  And my source for total stake-winners was incorrect.  So will amend the following:

G1 winner no 18 - after Maranoa Chariie wins the G1 Prix De la Foret

Interersting both G1 winners overnight led all/most the way and couldn't be caught. ..something we haven't seen from his Aussie runners.

I recall in the 80's during winter there were a few 1600m and 1800m 2yo races.  I think there's zippo now to cater for those late 2yo's beyond 1400m.

By my count 13 of his 16 Gp1 winners have won at that level beyond 1200m:

1300m: 1
1600m: 5
10f/2000m: 5
2100m: 1
2800m: 1

Subject to correction.

Then later said in Australia, which was a pretty pointless question given the sire's oldest only turned 2yo's a couple of months ago.  Ermm

I still wish to see some Better Boy blood crossed to Wootton Bassett.  From the same 2n family.  That of Gainsborough and also Salieri.  We have plenty of Gainsborough behind most of our pedigrees but not as much Better Boy.  But although all these sires got speed it was speed that could go out over a distance!

G1 winner no 19 overnight with Hawk Mountain winning the Doncaster Futurity and up to 77 Stakeswinners now with Napoleonic at the Valley.

Has live chances in both of the French G1's to be run tonight and should Observer not run the Derby tri p next week, Providence is the value bet.
