Pike Cancels Perth Trip
William PikeWest Australian born jockey William Pike will not ride at Ascot this Saturday.

Pike was expected to ride Star Encounter in the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m).

However due to difficulties in making satisfactory travel arrangements, Pike will stay in Hong Kong and ride at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Pike rode at Ascot's Railway Stakes meeting a fortnight ago and was able to ride one winner from seven rides.

His mount in the Railway Stakes, Keytomoney, finished last after leading the field into the straight.

Where does this guy rate in terms of the best jockeys in the country?
His timing is first class, never seems to panic and just keeps winning.
Six winners at Belmont yesterday. Would love to see him have a crack in the Eastern states.

He's great at what he does but I'd criticize him for being an extremely one dimensional jockey. He gives alot of 2's on shots unacceptable rides.

Gets a high % of plum rides in WA. Has had a short stint in the east and seem to recall a few negative comments. Not in the top 10 until he shows his form elsewhere imo. When I followed Perth a while back I always thought The Pontiff PHarvey a more talented jockey.

I do think he'd measure up okay in Melbourne and be one of the best riders but I don't rate any of them at all.

He's one dimensional and he should have been drawn and quartered a long time ago for riding for luck on $1.40 shots.

A first-class jockey over in the west.  Has averaged 25% winners to runners for any number of years, has won 9 WA premierships, $70m in prizemoney.

More than happy to have him on.

Have to wonder how many $1.40 pops would be $1.40 if he wasn’t on.

My WA betting is pretty much restricted to Wiz, Staeck, the good Noske, Mitch Pateman, Pontiff, Kirby & Stone. Those two apprentices have been especially profitable, though I’m constantly refreshing their data in anticipation of a period of negative variance.

Yeah it's a good group you bet on there. Mitch Pateman will dominate that state in 2-3 years. Johnson-Porter & Andrew Castle both have a fair bit of ability as well.

Now only has to pilot the 2's on pop home in the Kingston Town to have ridden all of Perths G1 winners for this season.  Obviously not a feat that could be achieved in Melbourne or Sydney but it also possible in Adelaide (4 G1s) and also Brisbane with their 7 G1 races, has any jockey managed to win one towns G1 book in a season before?

Lucy Warwick is the most underrated in WA, put her on Pike's steeds and she would do them justice, the lady can ride, she rides a tad longer than most and when the girl kicks them they stay kicked, punishing finish with the stick and without it.

Hmmm, he hardly set the world alight in his stint in Melbourne a few years ago.
“I fuvked up there” was the usual comment as he jumped off.

His job on Regal Power in particular (yep, I was on for heaps) was less than competent.

He consistently rides horses for luck, that have panels on the the field, and are ridiculously short in the market.

Take away the Williams horses, and he’s hardly dominant.

29 group two, 2 in Victoria from 20 starts.

Rode 4 winners at the Mornington carnival including the 3 main races , Cup, Hareeba , Guineas , Caulfield Guineas on Ole Kirk , William Reid on Masked Crusader , has ridden 6 winners in 1 day twice , the last 6 not one owned by Peters , he's a champion Rusty and your a bad judge of horsemanship , and what's more his integrity is beyond reproach ! Lucy Warwick , nice young lass but for me as a jock , average .Wink

Whatever, I’ll keep laying anything that he’s on, that’s short in the market and drawn inside.

Yep well played, I agree. Lucy is a good rider.
Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

You see the race?
To find the rail, he’d have to drag back behind smiths horse.
It would have been the biggest slaughter of the century.

Now why Rusty would he want to find the fence ? stay out of trouble on a weighted certainty and bobs your uncle , yes Rusty I've seen the race , he's capable of winning a Cox Plate imo.

You’re telling us Pike was a genius staying one off the fence.
I tell you it would have been a slaughter, had he found the fence.

But I agree, stay out of trouble on the best horse in the field, and it’s happy days.

Unfortunately, I see Pike 3 and 4 fence regularly on 1.40 and shorter things.

He regularly storms home a metres short.

But hey, I need people like you, to give me these opportunities.

So, thanks!

I think your letting personal thoughts get into this rusty old mate, I mean he had 4 winners, a 2nd and a 3rd from 6 rides on Caulfield Guineas day last year for 2 G1 wins and a G2, he may not dominate when riding in Vic but that can't be expected given he's jumping into a deeper pool than back home and also isn't in the plum job as stable jockey for the dominant stable in the area.  A few of the Vic trainers wanted him to stay in Melbourne post-spring carnival last year but he says he prefers to live in Perth.

My records back to 1988 say that no jockey has ever completed a clean sweep of a city's group 1's.

The closest I have is in 2013 Ben Melham won 3 of the four group 1's in Adelaide.

Goodwood - Platelet

Robert Sangster - Platelet

South Australian Derby - Escado

His Australasian Oaks ride was a filly named First Bloom for Darren Weir and she finished sixth.

Closest I have.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise

Not at all.
Him riding 4 winners on guineas day is not proof of genius.
He had an unbelievable book.
I backed both the guineas winner & A Queen that day.
I’m not saying he’s hopeless, just saying people often call him a genius for not being incompetent.
Yesterday’s race, a perfect example.

the mugs jump on anything he’s on, and quite often even money chances are 2s on, when you know he’s going to ride for luck ( pretty sure Peters likes his ridden cold)
It’s a winning strategy to lay them.
