Heroes in this context here, simply means people you admire or respect, look up to them, you have garnered lessons of life & knowledge from. You feel proud there are people who have similar to your own morals and ways about life.

Me I'm really big on loyalty.

Carl.

I dont have any heroes. And they give a bloke who says he doesn't hold a hose an AC

Paraphrasing Keating" I don't believe in little medals given by some committee".

Nailed it as usual.

Why not, it is true in many cases. Better than blithely sailing through life, doing nothing worthwhile and not even thinking about it.

It’s true that someone may have a particular skill or ability that others don’t but that doesn’t make them inherently better than others or worthy of blind hero praise. Respect is enough.

Having the self esteem to be confident enough in your own skin that you don’t need to worship someone you likely dont even know as a hero doesn’t equate to sailing through life never doing anything worthwhile. That’s a different issue altogether. Everyone has skills and abilities and should have the self-confidence to recognise them and hopefully do the best they can with what they’ve been given.

Actually I don't hero worship anyone, I admire some people greatly for their selflessness, humanity, loyalty etc.
I know people have different abilities, my point is that people who do their best to achieve with whatever talents or skills they may have are worthy of respect. Most just sail through life never getting anywhere near their true potential or even trying. Then again life is tough so maybe just surviving is worthy of respect.

Absolutely Carl, I think there is a bit of a cross of Idols here as opposed to Heroes or as you say people you admire for their contribution to whatever cause.

I have no beef with Pocock....probably a great bloke.....but his very successful footy career set him up financially.

And there are millions of folk out there who would classify themselves as conservationists & social justice advocates.

Very true, is it so rare for a politician to do the decent thing that he must be applauded as a hero? Countless people out there do much more and remain unrecognised.

What a strange thought. Just because one has respect for people who do extraordinary deeds, doesn't mean you yourself is less worthy.

I thought this thread was for highlighting individual heroes. We all should respect policemen, nurses, SES workers etc.

I've only just read through this.  And thought about it.  Lot's of people have sportsmen or women heroes.  People who have led their teams to victory etc.

I think my father would of been my main hero.  He cared for everyone small, weak or strong.  He gave his all to everything he did.  He was quiet and listened and helped when needed.  He taught me right from wrong and made me feel safe.

But otherwise most of my heroes I can't name.

The man who sat in the dark with stuart diver while they endeavour to get him out before he drowned after the thredbo disaster.  Courage and kindness in one.

The ones who help rescue people from disasters in the outdoors, at sea, in homes or on the roads.  Where fire or rain, windy weather etc makes their lives at risk also but they go out and do their jobs or just step in because they are the only ones there.  Those who say these people deserve a chance to live and I have to step up or they wont.

It's often the little things who make you a hero.  We all have it in us.  We just have to hope that we don't ever have to show the courage to step up and be that hero.

I am beginning to realise some people's inadequacies are why they downplay heroes.

Makes them feel better about their moral shortcomings.

Whale makes fun of me when I laud my mother. At 98 she was still doing Meals-on-Wheels, which she started doing after she retired at 78. We used to laugh when she said she did it to help 'older people' survive.

There are heroes everywhere. They are needed in society to keep a moral compass face north.

I would never decry a hero.

I realised your inadequacies a decade ago, a constant need for affirmation is not normal.

Yes having people you like and admire continually shows me, how far away I am from being like them, its a huge huge space, a Gulf of infinity between myself and my heroes. Ah well it makes you try harder innit.

I am a bit like that too.  They are playing a game they love and getting money and admiration for doing it.  Not exactly hero material to me.  I admire what some of them have done, and continue to do, but I think hero is a bit much.  But. Just MHO .

I think of heros like the 2 professors who got Australian of the Year for their research into brain cancer, and the lady Doctor who treated the Bali bombing victims with a new type of skin .
People who are doing it for others, not for a brownlow medal.
I do admire Mark Hughes for his work .

Respect for someone is very different to considering them a hero. They are on completely different levels. Surprised someone with a 190 IQ isn’t able to comprehend that point.

May 2025

Acclaimed melanoma expert and former Australian of the Year Professor Richard Scolyer has shared a heartbreaking update on his battle with brain cancer – revealing the disease is advancing again.

Professor Scolyer, 58, was diagnosed with the aggressive and incurable glioblastoma in 2023 and initially given just eight months to live. However, after undergoing experimental immunotherapy based on melanoma research, his cancer remained at bay for 18 months.

It takes a wise man a lifetime to grow a tree and a fool five minutes to kill one.

Sportspeople need to do more than their sport - Billie Jean King, Dylan Alcott, Ian Roberts, have hero qualities.
