I would say the doubles odds must have been long, for a drover to be able to collect that big, his stake might not have had to be too large. Those doubles bookies were a huge business on that Cups double in those times. I remember an old bloke telling me he and his brother had Ziema going for 80,000 quid, in the double on the '65 MC. A massive sum today, many millions. Too bad it lost a close photo.

Did you 24 hours in emergency on SBS last night? This unfortunate woman managed to get kicked in the leg by a horse - extremely severe fractures- while riding a horse.

Dangerous animals, in the days of horses for human transport, the deaths and injuries were frightfully high. I suppose we can say the same for jockeys, it is very dangerous occupation, albeit well paid.

They seem to regularly admit horse injured patients with Drs saying how high they are on the list of 'most likely accidents'.
When working with animals, one tends to learn best from experience vs. the spoken or read word, however, sometimes you come off 2nd best in that process Cry

Anyone watch the McMillions doco? Interesting but gee they could have condensed that into 2 episodes. And is there a single "good guy" by the end??

I just watched 60 mins and saw all those scum bags ripping off money intended for the bushfire victims.  And they were locals in the communities too, not some big city mob.   Rotten scum bags.

Doubt too many will be rushing to donate to St Vincent De Paul and the Red Cross after this blatant rip off ??

I have never donated to either of that  lot anyway.  Makes you think you would just be better off driving thru after its all died down and handing your money and/or goods to a family standing in the rubble of their home.
This sort of thing certainly brings the crooks and cheats out of the woodwork .   Did you hear that woman who ripped off thousands tell the interviewer to go and catch real criminals.  Not only are they thieves but they cant see any wrong doing in it.Angry

I realised watching a story about the bushfire victims, why caravans are in high demand, as they apparently are, it seems thousands are living in vans on their properties.

The ABC rolled out a segment tonight about a relatively young bloke who had been relieved of $8 million by TAB, Ladbrokes and Beteasy, allegedly, the emphasis of the story was on how he was obviously known to be a "problem" gambler, but they kept him on the line by dangling bonus bets and incentives. That story had a glaring omission, that being being the source of all the money lost. He was alleged to have had a $130k a year job, but even my rudimentary maths can calculate that doesn't supply the ante for his losses. The ABC failed to answer that very obvious question, in their eagerness to apportion blame away from the gentleman concerned.

I see the ABC has now dropped a small detail into this story, in their news bulletins, about "old mate" and where the money came from. They say now, that it was "mostly other people's money". Just a minor thing, apparently not worth mentioning, initially. They have painted this bloke as a victim, when it appears he was a financial planner, who went rogue. There is a persistent stream of such stories on the ABC, that involve trying to put the skids under racing, when it is all too obvious that gambling losses on pokies and casinos are far greater, but rarely mentioned. I would bet there is someone in the ABC, in a position of authority, who is promoting these kinds of stories, has been for some time, and their's is a personal axe to grind, and it always concentrates on the ills that can be attributed to racing. My only query about this chap, portrayed as a "victim" by the ABC,, is why he isn't in jail.

I would like to see one example of where a big losing punter, losing obviously beyond their means was stopped by a corporate bookie. ResponsibleLOL Addicts are their preferred customers.

Of course they don't, if they shed big losers, they'd be out of business. No one stops you chain-smoking, if that be your wont, the only valid issues that came under question in that ABC segment were surrounding how he was able to be contacted by betting agencies, seemingly a breach of privacy, somewhere, and whether his accounts were set up, and run, in compliance with law, the suggestion on the program was a fake name account was set up by one agency. But really, to concentrate on where the money ended up, and not where it was filched from, originally, is a major failure by the ABC

The irony of a professional financial planner blowing millions mug punting, is a sure sign this bloke lost his way a long time ago, and I can't imagine a more convincing case of someone who was in the wrong job. But hey, he's the victim here !

Pathetic I know, but we love watching Farmer Wants a Wife,
well, we are just country folk ??
Plus Becker, Seinfeld, all those paramedic shows, and true crime, except I can never find any these days.
