And now Djokovic has stormed the clay fortress.

That's because Djokovic loses in early rounds less than Nadal.

I'd still call Fed the best ever. He almost reinvented the game and others learned from him. Saved tennis from the baseline sloggers and the big servers when it was getting boring. In his best form he could beat anyone in their best form. He could play any style, any part of the court, any surface. He taught Rafa and Novak how to play long matches when they got off to a bad start, using their strengths and psychological advantage over the opponent. He never pulled dirty fake tricks like Novak has always done.
A perfect Federer match was like a work of art to watch. A perfect Novak match is disgustingly good though, as unlikeable as he is, so maybe he has the edge in the end. But only because Fed and Rafa came before him. Rafa is a definite 3rd IMO, but he's a legend. |

That's just silly stayer, Nadal has Federer on any metric, won more Slams, won more Masters series events, head to head record, yet you say Federer is better because he is good to watch and he came along first, by that logic Pete Sampras is better because he won his slams before the big 3.

How do you compare 2 champions, it's like comparing phar lap to winx.
roger has 20 slams and 8 wimbledon titles (incredible)one french open. - nadal has 21 slams, 13 of them at roland garros (won't happen again) Both are champions

Unquestionably both are champions but it is human nature to acknowledge this and then ask, yeah, but who is the better?
I just think sometimes people put more value into aesthetics and other non-productive measures rather than raw output when judging sports stars, this is also the reason why in test cricket most rate Tendulkar and Lara above Kallis and Sangakkara when the raw output data, batting average, suggests the latter two were more productive.

Agree to an extent Afros, but sometimes data can tell you what it is you want to see.
Who was the better bowler; Warne or Murali? If I go with cold hard statistics, Murali wins hands down. But there are plenty of arguments that may sway me back to Warne, when you consider the circumstances surronding how and why such data was achieved. I just think we should enjoy champions for what they are. I'm not a great tennis fan, but absolutely loved what I saw on both Saturday and Sunday night.

By the time Djokovic won his first grand slam title in 2008, at the
Australian Open, Federer already had 12 to his name and Nadal three.

Yes that would be one point of discussion when debating the facts.

Not many, if any, and a very good point. How many wickets would have Murali taken if he had the likes of McGrath, Lee, Gillespie (and to a lesser extent) McGill to share the ball with?

If 3 men win 61 of 77 available grand slams since 2003, how many would each of them have won had there only been 2 or 1 of them, and does this just reflect how poor men's tennis is in the current era?

Save the cash. Cut slams down from 132 starters to just 3. Someone gets a bye in their first round match.
