Istabraq, the horse of a lifetime, has galloped across the rainbow bridge, leaving behind a legacy that will forever echo through the hallowed halls of horse racing history. This magnificent creature, who graced the turf with his presence for a remarkable 32 years, was not just a horse; he was a symbol of excellence, perseverance, and the indomitable spirit of the equine world.
Born in 1992, Istabraq was destined for greatness from the very start. His lineage, a mix of royal bloodlines and fierce determination, set the stage for a career that would see him become one of the most celebrated hurdlers in the history of the sport. Under the expert guidance of his trainer, Aidan O'Brien, and the skilled hands of his jockey, Charlie Swan, Istabraq soared to unparalleled heights.
His list of achievements is nothing short of staggering. Three consecutive Champion Hurdle victories at the Cheltenham Festival, from 1998 to 2000, cemented his place among the pantheon of greats. His dominance on the track was a sight to behold, as he effortlessly cleared hurdles and left his competitors in the dust.
But Istabraq was more than just a racing machine; he was a beloved figure, adored by fans and respected by his peers. His charismatic personality and playful antics endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a true ambassador for the sport, captivating audiences with his grace and power.
In his retirement, Istabraq lived out his days in the loving care of his handlers at Martinstown Stud in County Limerick. There, he was treated like the legend he was, pampered and cherished until his final days.
As we bid farewell to this extraordinary horse, we remember the joy he brought to so many lives. Istabraq's legacy will live on, not only in the record books but in the hearts of all who were touched by his remarkable presence. Rest in peace, Istabraq.

Vale Amelias Dream 🕊️
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the star mare Amelia’s Dream.
While her career was only a fleeting dream those two races left the racing world wondering what could have been. Having won both of those races by a combined margin of 18.5 lengths and her race record in the G2 Silver Slipper still stands 16 years on.
Amelia may never be remembered for her broodmare career however it seems her memory will live on through her granddaughter Amelita who recently won the G3 Red Roses stakes on Oaks day at Flemington and looks to have a bright future ahead of her.
Amelia’s filly by So You Think who was born back in September is healthy and seems to have inherited her mother’s strong willed personality and her love for running.
Amelia’s son Goodlucktome will be aiming to break his maiden tonight in the second race at Canterbury in the Element Hill silks and if he wins Amelia will once again have produced 100% runners to winners.

VALE Jack's N Kings. 29 -10-2009 to 09-02_2025.
Jack you arrived here 10 years ago, under weight and scared of humans. Your race history left something to be desired. A couple of months later you looked amazing and had started to trust us. You began winning races, including a win at Moonee Valley.
Jack you taught us so much and you gave us your all. You then retired at home on the farm. In last night's horrendous storm you were struck by lightening.
Thank you Jack for everything, today you have taken a part of us with you.

I remember the horse who played Phar Lap,  in the movie ,  was struck and killed by lightening in a paddock on the NSW Central Coast.
His name was Towering Inferno.  Not sure but think maybe was owned by the Harris,s.
The stallion Sauve Dancer went the same way.
Very sad way for Jack to go but he had a good life and was loved and cared for right to the end, unlike some other poor animals.  RIP Jack. Broken Heart

Vale dear Gold Guru, 22 Oct 1994 - 24 Feb 2025
Not just a successful racehorse, once he retired from the track he became a vital member of our team of “babysitters” at the farm. Goldie then enjoyed several years of true retirement, living out his days in comfortable surroundings, cared for and now missed by all of us at Mill Park.

Weekend Hussler, Australian Horse of the year in 2007/2008, has died from colic.

Clinton McDonald confirmed the news on Sunday morning.

“Hopefully he’s now up with Mum and Dad,” Clinton said.

“He took our family on one hell of a ride; he was the horse of a lifetime.”

His death comes less than two months after the passing of Clinton’s mother Margaret, wife of Weekend Hussler’s trainer Ross McDonald.

Clinton’s 2024 Blue Diamond winner Hayasugi also died in January.

Weekend Hussler burst on to the scene in the spring of 2007, winning his maiden at Cranbourne in early September and a little over two months later had won the Caulfield Guineas and Coolmore Stud Stakes.

He returned from a short summer break in devastating fashion, winning the Oakleigh Plate first-up before saluting as a $1.70 favourite carrying 56kg as a three-year-old in the Newmarket Handicap.

A trip to Sydney then beckoned for the Hussonet gelding and he defeated Triple Honour in the Randwick Guineas and then lowered the colours of local hero Racing To Win in the George Ryder Stakes.

Weekend Hussler is one of only five horses in Australian racing history to have won six or more Group 1s in a single season. The others are Kingston Town, Black Caviar, Winx and Via Sistina.

Not a TB , but still a great race mare .

Farewell to a Champion – Tailamade Lombo
We are deeply saddened by the passing of the great Tailamade Lombo at the age of 30. A true champion on the track, she captured hearts with her brilliance, speed, and determination, etching her name into harness racing history.
Alabar was privileged to care for her in her later years, and it has been an honor to give back to a mare who gave so much to the sport. She has now been laid to rest in the Alabar cemetery, among many of the illustrious stallions who shaped the industry.
Rest easy, Tailamade Lombo. Your legacy lives on.

I was never really a Harness race fan but she captured my imagination.

If I am not mistaken, they used other mares to breed her foals whilst she kept racing.

Would that be right ?

Very possible djebel.

Once attended a seminar at a significant veterinary practice where they had a phalanx of host mares who were surrogate mothers or at least likely to be as a result of embryo transplant.  Which I found damn awful.

Though there was a later moment when a South American breed of stallion hopped on a metal horse frame and had his semen captured for later artificial insemination.  And promptly collapsed thereafter, following which a wit in the audience called out "hey, someone give the bugger a cigarette".  Thankfully some humor after seeing the ET sausage production line.

‘It's a sad day': Group 1-winner Happy Clapper dies

Happy Clapper, the racehorse who was the epitome of the phrase the "people's champion", has died after suffering from colic.

The multiple Group 1 winner's former trainer, Pat Webster, learned of the passing of his former stable star on Thursday morning.

"It's a sad day,'' Webster said. "But when I think of ‘The Clapper' there are so many great memories.

"He might not have been a champion but he was the best horse I ever trained.''

Happy Clapper won 12 of his 48 races and earned more than $7.2 million prizemoney including Group 1 wins in the 2016 Doncaster Mile, 2017 Epsom Handicap and 2018 Canterbury Stakes.

"He is the only horse to win the Villiers Stakes (2015), Doncaster and Epsom Handicaps,'' Webster said.

Happy Clapper also ran placings in another 10 Group 1 races including four seconds behind the great Winx.

In the 2019 Chipping Norton Stakes, Happy Clapper famously attempted an all-the-way win and dashed five lengths clear on the turn. He maintained his advantage until near the 100m when, inevitably, Winx reeled in her old rival to win by more than a length in an epic finish.

"I remember the crowd gave him almost as big a reception as Winx after that race,'' Webster said.

"My family always tells me that they will be talking about Happy Clapper in 100 years' time because of Winx.'

Webster's ever-reliable gelding was so popular with racing fans that the Australian Turf Club named a bar after him in the Winx Stand at Royal Randwick.

Happy Clapper had been enjoying a leisurely retirement until falling ill this week and despite the best veterinary care, could not be saved. He was 14 years old.

It takes a wise man a lifetime to grow a tree and a fool five minutes to kill one.

ASHFORD STREET

Dabernig under investigation after positive swab

A horse trained by Warrnambool-based Tom Dabernig has returned a positive swab to a prohibited substance, prompting a Racing Victoria investigation.

The Dabernig-trained Ashford Street returned a positive test in a pre-race urine sample before the Millennium Sprint at Caulfield last October.

The Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory found Ashford Street’s sample to contain Testosterone, Formestane, 4-Hydroxytestosterone, and 6a-Hydroxyandrost-4-Ene3, 17-Dione, all banned under the Australian rules of racing.

Both Testosterone and 4-Hydroxytestosterone are classified as an anabolic androgenic steroid, according to the RV stewards’ release.

Formestane is a steroidal aromatase inhibitor and a-Hydroxyandrost-4-Ene3, 17-Dione is a metabolite of a steroidal aromatase inhibitor.

Steroidal aromatase inhibitors are not known to be contained in any therapeutic medications registered for use in horses.

Ashford Street, who won at Caulfield in December, died in April, according to the Australian Stud Book.

The RV stewards’ investigation is continuing.
