Question - does the average tourist REALLY come away from any country knowing anymore about local living conditions ? Wouldn't you be just as well off sitting in your beanbag at home googling on an i-pad for half an hour. Sure the entertainment in the night spot areas might be good - but probably no better than whats available in  Sydney in the right areas. Does visiting Bondi, the Opera House & seeing the Harbour Bridge really expand the knowledge much ? Just came back from the Hunter Valley & went to a couple of trendy restaurants (Goldfish, Legends Chateu Elan). I was talking to a receptionist the next day who had lived down the road at Cessnock for 30 years & she had never been to either - or any winery for that matter. How often do Sydneysiders go to Darling Harbour, Bondi of the Opera house - or any other iconic tourst attraction ? So does overseas travel really broaden the knowledge - or is it just a wankfest ?

I've been to Vegas 5 times in the past 8 years. Straight to LA & direct transfer to Sin City. Haven't even made the Grand Canyon yet - even though it was on the to do list every time. When asked if I've been to the States - my reply is - yes lots of times  LOL

Unless you're a professional poker player I can't see the point.

No - i'm hardly that. Just love the joint. I agree the punting is bad - go more for the fun. 24/7 party atmosphere. Cheap as chips as well. Vegas is a major casualty of the global casino trend - so the market is primarily domestic these days. Yanks all on holiday looking to have a bit of fun.

See Tlaz - thats my idea of a holiday. Mixing with others that want a bit of fun. Also love Cruising for exactly the same reason. Premium drinks package& away we go. Draw the line at P&O though - they really cater for the bottom feeders. Even i struggle with that lot !

How do you fill in your time in Vegas after the bright lites wear off 1x1 ?  It is fun the first time but then it gets a bit the same reruns.

I know what you mean Acacia - you can hit a flat spot every now & then. I usually just try to push my way through it. I think for both Vegas & Cruising the nocturnal approach has merit. Quite often arrive home whiter than when i left LOL

Anyhow Whale - i'm trying to establish how zipping into a country for a few days - getting ripped off looking at all the tourist attractionswith a squillion others - then flying onto the next hot spot really improves your knowledge of what life is really about for those that live there. Thoughts (big ask i know) ?

Settle down Whale. I want this thread to be a keeper. I seriously believe overseas travel is overrated. Not suggesting don't do it - just think it adds squat all to what you can learn about a country from in front of a computer. The secret to a good holiday is to relax & have fun. If you achieve that better by travelling to another country all good.

Why exactly does it bother you that people get enjoyment from travel and why do you think you are the one to determine if their reasons are correct ?

So weird

Sitting in front of a computer googling places is certainly not at all like going to the country.    You are just looking at pretty pictures.
People ask us why do we bother going to Africa when we can see all the animals in zoos here.
Just no comparison seeing an animal in its natural habitat and in a zoo.  Not to mention the amazing local guides who take you out tracking them.  And staying in the camps, sitting round the fire at night , listening to their many interesting stories.
Same with going to places like London .   Pictures on a computer dont give you the atmosphere and local feel for a place .
animals before people.

I'm glad your showing interest PT - i wanted to ask you a question & get a more local perspective. As a local Byron Bay resident - do you spend your time out there socialising / making the tourists feel welcome ? Do you embrace them ? Or are you like most of the other locals up that way selling dope , incense sticks or arts & crafts to them to help keep your head above water ?

We are very open and welcoming up this way oneone, and dont care what race or religion you are. Even you would be welcomed. Thumbs Up

We have one of our two big musical events on next week only 2km from here. 100+ musical acts from all over the world, the biggest festival in the Southern Hemisphere.

Just a tip though, leave your stash at home, with kids dying at your festivals, police presence is very heavy here. Cheap seats only $415 or the VIP deal $799. I dont need to pay, just sit on my back porch to listen, if I so choose.

This thread has made my morning! Logging on to see that my comment has gotten up OneOne’s nose so perfectly is truly beautiful! Must have really struck a nerve!

Like AA says, viewing from the internet is never the same as experiencing a place first hand. All you see if pictures. There is no interaction with people, you don’t get to sit down and watch the world go by, or see something down a side street and decide to check it out. What you see is a very limited picture. That’s why the beanbaggers of this world like OneOne think places like London are terrible. All they see and read is a bunch of nonsense and they think its reality. Get out in the world and live a little and you’ll find that reality is totally different to what you believe.

LOL @ “zipping in to a country for a few days – getting ripped off etc etc”. And yet you seem to think Vegas is some kind of mecca for bargains. Maybe 25+ years ago but now it’s a place where they will be extracting every last cent from you and that’s before you even get to the gambling. It’s the place that pioneered “resort fees”, where major hotels charge for parking, where getting a seat at a nightclub will cost you a bottle of vodka at a 50 times markup, the list goes on! I enjoy the place too but don’t delude yourself into thinking you will get any bargains there without doing a significant amount of research. TIP: Paying US$80 for a breakfast at the café at Wynn is not a bargain.

Your comments make you sound like the kind of guy who would set up camp in Times Square instead of walking the entire length of Broadway through dozens of different neighbourhoods. You’d go to Yosemite National Park and sit on the valley shuttle buses all day instead of getting out and hiking some of the trails. You’d take a photo at the base of the Eifel Tower then make a beeline for the Arc de Triomphe and think you’ve “done” Paris. Probably think Newton Circus is the centre of Singapore food culture. Still it could be worse, you could be like LR80 and touring the local internet café’s when overseas. Now there’s a guy who knows how to immerse himself in the culture!

There’s much more than the typical tourist traps that your beenbaggery has let you to believe.

Don’t worry about missing out on the Grand Canyon. Took a helicopter ride there from Vegas the first time I visited and was underwhelmed. If you’re going to go then try hiking down into it. One for next time if I ever get back there.

That post surprises me E&E - sort of confirms everything i said, Allow me too suggest most of what you & other tourists see is a contrived culture. You are either mixing with those making a quid out of you or other tourists. What would doing a lap of Darling Harbour onto George St down to Circular Quay do for your understanding of Australia (or even Sydney) ? I assume you have done it by the way ? A lot of locals probably haven't. And i'm not sure where you got the idea i go to Vegas for bargains - i brought a pair of runners once from memory only because i had a blow out with my Dunlops LOL . I go there for a good time - full stop. Anyhow, as long as being a World Traveler floats your boat its all good. I just question what you really gain from it.
