Now I am a breeding novice djebel, and even I know all about this tough, quality producing New Zealand family.

I think he could be a nice one for the group 3 or 2 races in the spring!

It’s a remarkably successful family that the Dennis family have sustained for many generations.

My favourite as a teenager was THE PHANTOM. Plenty of WFA wins & Caulfield/Melb Cup placings. His win the the 93 Mackinnon Stks coming back from injury as an 8yo was awesome.

And like THE CHOSEN ONE, he was trained by Murray Baker!

Murray Baker early on, I think it was Noel Eales training him by the time he won the Mackinnon.

The Phantom actually won NZ Horse of The Year in the season his younger brother won a Cox Plate.

The Phantom Chance had 11 wins from 1400m-2400, The Phantom was probably the better stayer yet won from 1200-2000m, somehow never winning past 2000m despite placing in both Cups and an SA Derby.

Go back a generation and their dam was part of a similar sibling rivalry, but three ways.

Their dam The Fantasy won 18 races from 1200-2200.  Her full sister The Twinkle won 15 races from 1200-2000m, and half sister The Dimple (3/4 to The Phantom) won 16 times from 1200m-2200m.
They also used to take turns beating each other. In the 1980 G3 Timaru Cup, The Twinkle beat The Fantasy, a year later The Twinkle was away in Auckland running 2nd in an Auckland Cup, so The Dimple won the race, and in 1982 The Dimple won again beating The Twinkle.

The Twinkle was the best of them in terms of ability, but least successful breeder.

The Fantasy hit breeding success with The Phantoms, but with both of them geldings and her fillies mostly poor producers, her line seems to have basically gone.

The Dimple was the most successful breeder long term, producing 9 winners including a G1 winner in Irish Chance, and has been the granddam/great granddam of numerous black type performers, most obviously The Jewel.

One of the best races I have seen Lord involved the Phantom brothers.

1992 Caulfield Stakes when Naturalism had to take the run between the two brothers. Great memories, although I had The Phantom Chance, the crowd erupted when Oliver took the gap!

The Phantom had an amazing spring/summer that season given he hadn't started between Feb 1991 and September 93.  Unfortunately he disliked wet ground so the track in the Cup stuffed him.

Great to see The Chosen One give “The” family a contender for the Spring Cups again 👏.

Can hardly it’s been 30 years since Murray Baker had The Phantom run 3rd in the 1989 Caulfield Cup & 4th in the Melb Cup. He was then 2nd in 1990 & 8th in 1993.

Other relations like The Phantom Chance & The Bandette also had unsuccessful cracks at the Cups a few years later.

Can TCO go one better in 2019?

He’ll find it tough against the international raiders but it would nice to see. He’s a product of decades long breeding program by the owners, the Dennis family.

Much prefer owner/breeders like them win the Cups than owners who purchased their horse a few months (or weeks) before the race.

From 2014 onwards, a Herbert Power runner has won or placed in Caulfirld Cup or Melbourne Cup. Only time this didn't happen was 2016.

2014: Protectionist ran 4th & won Melbourne Cup,

2016: Prince Of Penzance ran 8th & won Melbourne Cup.

2017: Boom Time ran 4th & won Caulfield Cup.

2018: Prince Of Arran ran 3rd & ran 3rd in Melbourne Cup.
Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

And so would I LH, the perfect example imo of a handicapper slightly short of WFA class, perfect drop in grade which suited.

Just watched a replay of the G1 mile race from NZ yesterday.

This guy was finishing very nicely for 3rd place. Definately one to follow.

Not sure what Murray Baker hasn’t planned for him but a trip to Sydney for those autumn handicaps would seem perfect for him - eg Manion Cup or Chairman’s Hcp.

Then the revamped Qld Winter carnival, which always used to be a happy hunting ground for Kiwi stayers.

Baker said safely through today's race, The Chosen One would head to Sydney with the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) a possible first-up assignment on March 7.

After that, the group three Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on March 21 and the group two Chairman's Handicap (2600m) at Randwick on April 4 are further possible lead-up races to the group one Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 11.

"If he was going well enough, we could look at the Tancred Stakes [group one, 2400m] as an alternative on the way through."

Randwick City Stakes has been decimated by scratchings, leaving Shared Ambition & The Chosen One at the top of the market.

Not sure how much potential SA has, but on Spring form you’d have to lean to TCO.

TCO beat Prince of Arran & wasnt far away in the Cups, whilst SA hasn’t proven himself outside Benchmark class.

Great return from TCO today!

A lot of these Kiwi stayers peak as 5 or 6 year olds, so he may have a fruitful Spring ahead.  He might be a notch off the top stayers come the Caulfield & Melb Cups but there is definately another nice black type staying race for him.

Another race from yesterday, the Danehill Stakes, was once won by a member of this family.
The One (O'Reilley - The Grin) who went to HK and raced as Never Look Back.
He was a full brother to The Chosen One's grand dam.

it's a shame he needs to win on Saturday, it virtually puts a line through his winning chances the following week.

It's a strange and unfortunate situation,

he needs to win to get in.

He needs to get in to win.

A hard race on Saturday will make him too dour for next week.

In hindsight, and it should have been clear at the start of this campaign. He should have gone first up into the Naturalism and 2nd up into the Caulfield Cup.

I assume he has finished his spring, and it has turned out be quite a successful one.

He was brilliant first up and then put in two lacklustre races before wonderful efforts in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup.

Stewards really should query those two lacklustre efforts.

No skulduggery in TCOs performances djebel.

I think hes just one of those hard to catch horses who mixes his form.

Very profitable spring. Super effort by the Kiwi today for 4th Clap

I agree Djebel and Lord Hybrow. He does mix his form but he is a tough honest stayer.  You'd think Tancred and Sydney Cup are possible targets in 2021 during the autumn

Great return today!

If he can somehow get 57 kilos (hopefully there are good noms), he should go close in the Sydney Cup.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise

As usual TCO put in an excellent 1st up run for 3rd in the Feehan.

Theyve taken the Underwood & Herbert Power path to the Caulfield Cup in both 2019 & 2020.  Will be interesting to see if they go the same way again in 2021.

Well beaten in the Cup today, but still giving his all in the straight to jag 5th place (to go with his 4th last year).

Good old fashioned staying handicapper.  Winless from 5 cracks at 3200m but always in the mix.

Well done TCO, good effort Clap
