There are a lot of world records and fast times being set in track events this year, even by Australians.Shocked I'm looking forward to the track and field events.

The 400m hurdles will be a cracker. Women’s world record broken a few days ago and now the men’s this morning. Both races have multiple runners capable of running a record again. Can’t wait. Suspect much of the rest of the games will be a fizzer.

Thought our swimmers were impreesive at the recent trials.
I reckon NSW will be in lockdown when the games roll around, so ratings will be through the roof.

Okay while we are coming into a very unusual games, that is if they are completed, lets see how we think will Australia will do.

I will put the analysis into three categories, Gold medal hopes, medal hopes, and the athletes who are finalists hopes.

Gold Medal hopes. 23

Ariane Titmus x 2
Kelsey Lee Barber
Jessica Fox x 2
Mens 4000m Team Pursuit
Rohan Dennis Time Trial
3 Day Eventing Team
Mens Golf Duo ( Cameron Smith & Marc Leishman)
Kookaburras
Hockeyroos
Womens 8 crew rowing
Womens Rugby 7's
Mixed Nacra (sailing)
Mens Two person Dinghy (sailing)
Womens Surfing (Sally Fitzgibbon & Steph Gilmore)
Kyle Chalmers
Womens 4x100m Freestyle relay
Womens 4X100m Medley relay
Ash Barty
Alex De Minaur
Mixed Doubles
Womens Water Polo

Medal Hopes. 39

Mens Archery Team
Dani Stevens (womens discus)
Brooke Stratton (womens long jump)
Dane Bird Smith (20km mens walk)
Liz Clay (womens 100m hurdles)
Nina Kennedy (womens pole vault)
Opals
Boomers
Murray Stewart (K-4 1000m Canoe Sprint)
Lachlan Tame (K-2 1000m Canoe Sprint)
Annette Edmondson (womens omnium)
Womens 4000m Team Sprint
Womens Synchronised 3m Springboard
Melissa Wu (womens 10m Platform)
Shixin Li (mens 3m springboard)
Andrew Hoy x 3 (3 day eventing teams, 3 day eventing individual)
Edwina Tops Alexander  (showjumping)
Mens Golf team
Womens Golf Team
Mens 4 man crew
Womens Surfing
Mens surfing
Cate Campbell x 4
Emily Seebohlm x 3
Mens 4 x 100m Medley
Mens 4 x 100m Freestyle
Emily McKeon x 3
Womens 4 x 200m freestyle
Mitch Larkin
Safwan Kahlil (Tae Kwon Do)

Finalists or Top eight hopes

Alice Ingley (womens archery)
Ryan Tyack (mens archery)
Taylor Worth (mens archery)
Bendere Oboya (womens 400m)
Cedric Dubler (decathlon)
Genevieve Gregson ( 3000m womens steeplechase)
Kurtis Marschall (mens pole vault)
Liam Adams (mens marathon)
Womens Beach Volleyball
Mens Canoe Slalom
Amanda Spratt (womens road race)
Richie Porte (mens road race). This course around Mount Fujiyama should suit Richie and if he can latch on to a nation such as Belgium or Great Britain with the Yates boys and Geraint Thomas he could get pulled along in a breakaway.
Matildas
Mens Rugby 7's
Softball

Australia always pick up some unexpected medals and with a huge number of new additional sports in this games, that could happen.

There are hopes in BMX, Sailing, Rowing and the sports climbing and skateboarding is a your guess is as good as mine situation.

I think a realistic medals target is around the 50 mark so somewhere between 47 and 52.

The gold tally is a little high but no doubt we can see at least 10 with the swimming having at least 5 gold medal hopes alone.

We have a strong equestrian team which can get 4 medals at least, our cycling team is light on experience but we should see at least 4 medals from there, sailing has been one of the go to disciplines over the last decade and we can repeat that here.

Jessica Fox has not performed well at previous games but she should at least gain two medals.

I personally think the tennis, golf and surfing will see Australia's athletes be right in contention. If Kyrgios joins Alex De Minaur then this tournament should suit him. All our male and female surfers and golfers are genuine medal hopes but they are sports which are what form you are in on the day.

So I can see a tally of 10 gold medals - 37 medals and at least twenty finalists or top eight finishers.

23 gold medal hopes ?  Not that I know that much about some of those hopes, but in tennis they are nothing more than hopes , the mixed doubles and Alex de Minaur are remote at best. de Minaur was knocked out in the 1st round at Wimbledon and he is a hope at the Olympics , come on .

And more often than not we come up well short of the expected tally in our swimming teams.

I understand that Bob, but if you look beyond Wimbledon he did win the lead in tournament.

We never reach our potential due to athletes not performing on the day, for instance Jessica Fox in the canoe slalom has won multiple world championships but she seems to just fall short in the Olympics.

All the gold medal hopes I have shown are genuine medal hopes, so that means Australia should get 23 medals of some description.

Ash Barty, Sally Fitzgibbon & Steph Gilmore, the mixed sailing crew, womens 4x 100m Freestyle, Andrew Hoy (individual 3 day event) and the 3 day event team, Kelsey Lee Barber (womens javelin), Rohan Dennis (mens time trial), mens 4000m team pursuit, Kyle Chalmers, Ariarne Titums x 2 and womens water polo team ( are they the Sharks or Stingrays) are all genuine gold medal hopes in all their events.

I think all our golfers are medal hopes, I think all our surfers are genuine medal hopes, I think whoever Ash doubles up with in the mixed doubles makes a formidable team, and there are world champion podium finishers and defending medalists from Rio who are all hopes here as well.

I think the 37 medal tally is a realistic target, and if everyone performs to their potential we can reach 47 to 52 medals.

Of course the normal gauge of hopes is hard to use this year but I think if we get 37 medals it has ben a good games and if we get to the 47 it has been a fantastic games.

Pat Mills is short-priced fav @ $1.40 to be our Flagbearer - ahead of notables Cate Campbell. Andrew Hoy , Steph Gilmore, Emily Seebohm, Ash Barty plus others. Thoughts ? I'm thinking probably Cate Campbell or Andrew Hoy  - however i think Mills is a very classy fellow who would do up proud.

Steady up Stayer - i think she is unlikely to get the job. Not because she isn't a great sportswomen at the top of a global competitive sport. And a lovely disposition as well. More the fact Tennis  - for many - is not a Traditional Olympic Sport. She gets plenty of accolades in the WTA regime.

Andrew Hoy was flag bearer in 1996. Would he get a second go? Not sure but enough for me to rule a line through him.

Gilmore - surfing shouldn’t even be there so it’s a no from me.

Cate Campbell - a possible for mine. Seebohm no though.

Barty - agree with your reasoning. However if she manages to win Wimbledon I reckon he chances go right up. Get on if she does.

Mills - probably a good reason he is the hot favourite. Couldn’t take $1.40 without some inside info though.

if Cate doesn't carry it in, she'll probably carry it out...

is there going to be a closing ceremony?

as for these two events...Womens 4x100m Freestyle relay. Womens 4X100m Medley relay. Should be almost certain golds.

Your right furious.

I'd rather watch a full showjumping session than the BS 100m sprint at the track which seems to be a highlight for other people in the Olympics.
