Please don’t tell me that disqualifies me from Buddhism? I thought if I exterminated the mosquitos, rats, bot flys and cockatoos I’d still have a chance. I learn something every day!

Don't think I ever posted that, but a couple of ideas for songs at the time. If the thread turns out to be respectful and positive I might post some stuff. |

Sorry, I know my posts sometimes ramble 😇
My grandparents had a son (obviously my uncle) who was in hospital in Canberra with a brain tumor and a dire prognosis. It would have been about 1970. No telephones, so all communication was by mail. And my sick uncle was a man of words who just happened to be a proof reader for some Canberra government department. So my grandfather, Bob’s father sent him a letter. Just a bit of news from home Everyone mentioned in the letter we knew. I promise it’s worth reading to the end. RIP Bob. A Trip To Town They say I never touch a pen! A wicked fabrication! To prove my point I will compose a little recitation. There’s lots of words I’d like to use If I knew how to spell ‘em, But Thursday morn I caught the bus With Lily at the helm. The day was warm but not too hot, No reason for complaining. The driver, I was soon to find Extremely entertaining. Then, all at once we hear a roar Would shake the world’s equator, And Lily swore, “I’ve broke the spring On the accelerator!” A screech of brakes, a switch of gears And we had ceased to travel The door was opened with a bang And Lily hit the gravel. A headlong dive beneath the bus With just her feet protruding And useless as a wooden doll I wandered ‘round abrooding. A station wagon drew beside It was my poor relation, With Elsie Maude and Jenny Lou All full of consternation. We grouped ourselves at Lily’s feet With faces grim and solemn While many a fervent heartfelt curse Came floating up the column. At last! “Ha! Ha! I’ve done the trick! I’m bloody nearly busted!” Gave us the clue that all was well, The spring was readjusted. When Lily tried to wriggle out From underneath the bumper Her knee joints stopped her trouser cuffs, Her armpits held her jumper. One final heave and she emerged All smiles, she’d solved the riddle While only grease and dust and dirt Enveloped Lily’s middle. Once more upon our merry way The miles were left behind us With every passing motor car Endeavoring to blind us. And then a fleet of Council trucks With water tanks a’wheeling Applying fluid to the road Preparing it for sealing. And stranded in that soupy mess Half mad with indignation Who do you think? I knew you’d guess! It was my poor relation. So Jenny clambered on the bus And set off at the double To find a scientific man To diagnose the trouble. When she had gone old Archie Boy His face all red and glowing Applied his knowledge to the job And got the engine going. While he was speeding on his way With Elsie snug behind him The breakdown truck with men aboard Was tearing out to find him. “Thus, all is well that endeth well” To quote an adage hoary And now I think that I should end This stupid little story. Of broken springs and tumoured brains We will henceforth, be scary Best wishes, love and all the rest From yours - Ern and Mary! |

I have traveled the far seas From the EU to the East, Absent China and the North Korean beasties. Along the way, I met Brits, Japs, and Frogs And even a few strays Called Aussies my god I should let them be. So when I returned home, Middle aged and bent kneed, I wondered why everyone called them Downunder Aussies. Without the traveling means, These strays lived far from me, I chose my laptop as a virtual means. I landed in a Village, Name for the horses I breed, My welcome I thought was far beneath me. I stayed and lurked for a time Until one of the strays called PT Insulted my national pride as if he pee'd on me. My love for the horse Warned me that I should be quiet and shy But that was not me. So I stubbornly stayed As these Downunder strays Belittled me. A snipe began here and there that needled me About a narcissitic man Called Trump, my elected leader indeed. My President he was, A fool of sorts to some A King to others but not me. Be that as he may, My President he was Until next election day for the voters and me These strays called me names Redneck, moron, and the like, But some villagers were suprisingly nice to me. So here I stay. A yank all alone Still wondering what’s with these strays always needling me. So in this village, We virtually argue all day About a self centered fellow, who can’t behave when needed to be. So here I am at home Stateside everyday but traveling virtually and Talking to Australian strays in every which way not so nicely. The end to all this I do not know. But when heavens gate opens up, I hope some strays come along. |

And FF, more poems from your grandfather, please. I love the first stanza! Australian bush poetry is timeless – That bus trip to town could have been written about TBV

Ok here are some of mine this one from a Christmas
Next time that I go punting I swear I'll do it right I'll knock out all the losers Who can't stick out their heads and fight. Or all those silly horses Who dance and jig and sweat Who haven't got their heads on straight They're just not worth a bet. I'll pick the ones trained for the day Which nothing seems to phase Ridden by a champion Not some jockey in a daze. I hope you all do much the same Next time you place a bet Have a very Merry Christmas Hope Next Year is one of the best. |

This one was written Anzac Day in 2020
We remember not a victory We remember a defeat When looking back with hearts and minds We see a distant beach. We can feel their endeavour To keep each other safe We remember Men and Woman Lost together with their mates. What makes Australia different We don’t celebrate the war We remember instead the sacrifice Of those who gave their all. Of the countless men and woman Who’ve defended Aussie shores Who never returned to family On April 25th we pause. We say thank you for your service We thank also those returned We say thank you for your courage For the lessons which you learned. That war doesn’t solve our problems War doesn’t help the world But sometime we can’t avoid it Or our story would be soiled. So today we pause we listen To the souls now passed away We remember wars dark history With the many wreaths we lay. We remember sacrifice and service Remember fearful death and pain And we hope that with remembrance This will never come again. |

This one also during Covid
We await in hibernation For this threat to pass away A world wide epidemic Which is stretching things they say. Our doctors and our nurses Stand as one to stem the tide Of an overwhelming enemy We should look at them with pride. But instead reports of spitting Name calling and abuse For the very ones who’ll save us From this disease that’s on the loose. Does it remind you of another Distant story from our past Of a son sent down to save us From his people he was cast. They spat on him, denied him They put him on the cross As he hung there he forgave them Our lives saved when his was lost. So these sad and sorry stories Raised from fear this virus brings Nurses aren’t the enemy They need to shop for things. Each day they hold a death at bay They sacrifice for you So remember Easters message Their love will save you too. |

Written back in 2013 but still needs to be a reminder to some
One Mankind Mankind has come a long way Through science, maths and
time We think ourselves perfected At our best we're in our
prime. So why can't we acknowledge Different people different
creeds There is no true path to
follow When we have our lives to
lead. Some are scientifically
driven Or perfect the higher maths Others find a world
enlightened By music, art or dance. Yet somehow when you're
different Or you do not fit the norm We scorn you for the life you
lead Aren't we simply all one form. No matter where we all grew
up Our families we hold dear We're the same below the
surface So together there’s no fear. |

Most of my poems are written for hymns so don't belong here but this is mild
If we see only dirt and injustice This can only hurt To reinforce the negative Can only make it worse. If that is the life that they must lead Show not contempt but joy Say not how bad it is that your children must live like this Say what a lovely boy. You see when we point out the bad We make people feel below us We can help them better by listening To their life, their hopes, their loves. There can be no one path to follow Why not look for the little things To smile and share a joke with To see the joy that brings. We are but children in the wilderness Living in our houses of stone Why do four walls enclosing us Become the only way to make a home? I see people everyday who feel sorry for themselves I’ve been there myself You can’t function or make it better Not while your mind still hurts. When this happens a fallow time is needed So once more our life becomes clear The forgiveness we need is within us God’s hand is always near. |
