The Cleaner finished a brave third in the Emirates Stakes

Trainer Mick Burles has changed his mind on Sunday morning and will now take The Cleaner to Perth to contest the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot on November 22.

Burles said he had originally planned to send the seven-year-old to the paddock after finishing third in Saturday’s $1 million Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington but changed his mind after a call from the horse’s owners the following morning.

“It’s all changed this morning (Sunday), he’s pulled up a treat and is heading to Perth,” Burles said.

“The owners all changed their mind and they rang me this morning and said ‘stay there (in Melbourne) you’re going to Perth’.

“The main thing the horse has pulled up a treat. He’s licked his bin out, the horse is fine and it was the best he’s pulled up in his last four runs I reckon.

“He hardly blew a candle out when he came back into the saddling paddock, I thought he’d had enough but he’s telling me that he hasn’t so he can have another run then he can have a spell.”

Taking up his customary role in front, The Cleaner finished only 1.4 lengths behind the winner Hucklebuck in the Emirates Stakes despite conceding the winner 2.5kg.

Set to fly out of Melbourne on Friday alongside the likes of Bel Sprinter and Angelic Light, Burles said The Cleaner should handle the trip without concern.

“It’s only a fortnight away and it’s only a four-hour trip in the plane so I don’t think that will worry him.

“He’s got eight days over there to recover from the trip so he’ll be fine.”

Good luck to them, but in the vast majority of cases the trainer's initial plan to spell is vindicated by the horse's subsequent performances.

Well here we go again... Going to the well 1 time too many. Poor bloody horse. Hope they don't injure it.

Novice training at its best. For a 1 lung ciggy smoking keno addict you think the hirse winning over $500K this prep would satisfy????

Yeah, people like this piss me off.

Why ?

The horse is a 7 year old gelding why not send him to Perth.

Nowhere else on the planet would they dismiss this as pie in the sky stuff.

Why not just wish them good luck and back something else if you want to, Why wish them ill will ?

There was a month between his JRA Cup win and the Cox.  Then a fortnight to the Emirates.  And another fortnight to Perth.  Three starts in eight weeks.

Over-raced no way. I'm with djebel, mad not to go there.

Fast becoming my favourite horse. In an industry where we're quick to label horses as cats and expose those 'economical with courage' here's one who fights for the punter and every last dollar you have on it Wink

Hope he runs well. Even yesterday he fought on when he was headed. Special horse.

He's a gelding and won't make connections any money at home. The horse is obviously tough and the trainer is saying he pulled up well from the Emirates so while he's in this rich vein of form you would be mad not to keep him going.

He's the iron horse of Aussie racing.  Had 8 starts this prep and run well every time, starting in May.

Surely no more than 58kg.
Luckygray carried it last year and he was a G1 winner, guess it depends on whoelse lines up.

Not sure 8 starts in 6 months qualifies a horse as an iron horse - he's had less starts in his career than Quadri did in a single season!

Phar Lap raced 4 times during Cup week. Hyperno won the Queen Elizabeth 4 days after winning the Melbourne Cup. The Cleaner has it easy in comparison.

Good luck to Tassie owners they all seem to be enjoying this amazing journey.
As for overraced are u serious?
takes a gutsy strong horse to travel over and win in the west and I
think The Cleaner can adapt and win.

Just noticed this so wondering who this bloke is. Watched a few races  with him on Cox Plate day said he was from south of Tassie and had backed The Cleaner more with his heart.

Anyway The Cleaner ain't Phar Lap or Adelaide or Hyperno. l hope he does freshen well, just the odds are very much against it. That's what makes it interesting.

Could possibly be Vern Poke who operates the Tassie Transport & has been with him for every trip (media articles). I've met him but a long time ago & only briefly then so don't remember his face that well Smile

A horse can race for 12 months and have 30 starts in a row and that doesn't make it an iron horse in my book.  More a matter of how long a horse can produce peak perfomances.  The Cleaner has been doing his absolute best, the hard way out in front, at every start this prep.  By Perth he will have been up for ovr 6 months.  You are a tough marker if you don't consider him an iron horse.
