He is a very tough horse.
Going to be very exciting seeing him in the Ramsden.
Surprise Baby is going to be the one to beat though IMO

Thought he was a huge run, pace looked very solid and he did all the work

Going well, but if he starts favourite in that after today, then I must be missing something!

Even Anthony Freedman must be acknowledging the topweights run, surely.

Tough effort yesterday over 2800m. I’d love to think he & Surprise Baby could measure up to being competitive in a Melb Cup, but the days of local stayers emerging via off season races seem to be long gone.

Given yesterday’s race was his first ever black type win, what weight would be be allotted for the MC? Maybe 50.5kg or 51.0kg?

BM104 usually sees horses in on or near the minimum.

Thanks djebel.

It will certainly be interesting to see what races Anthony Freedman runs him in as lead up races. I’m not sure the horse will ultimately be good enough but Anthony is a trainer I have immense regard for.

Would be ironic if he happened to run in and win the Bart Cummings Stks on the way through - winning 2 “golden ticket” races

Runaway got in last year off 102 with 52 kgs.

Steel Prince has 104

Surprise Baby has 103

Depending on the strength of entries they should get 53 and 52.5 respectively.

Hed be on the minimum weight or close to it. I can't see him carrying anything more then 52kg.

If he were to win the Bart Cummings (2500m) he would be liable for a weight penalty (at the discretion of the handicapper) and I don't think the trainer and owners would want anymore weight for Steele Prince.

Surprise Baby might measure up because obviously that particular trainer has the “golden touch”. A real special trainer that can get the most out of horses that other trainers only dream of.

Question is...Will Surprise Baby make the field now? It might be tough. It's a big loss (yesterday's race) in the scheme of things

Are you trying to say that "Surprise baby" is what the feds will say when they raid him?

This guy did a terrific job to finish 9th today, only 2 lengths from the winner.

Looked like he was pulling his head off most of the trip & still finished determinately in the straight.

Will be interesting to see where Anthony Freedman heads with him in 2020. There’s definately a nice black type staying race him.

He performed above my expectations, I fully expected him to drop out of it in the straight.

Was a great run and the VRC would be stoked with the Andrew Ramsden form holding up so well.  Should get an even better field next year.

Nice improvement from this guy today, closing off nicely for 3rd in the Naturalism.

Currently 49th in the Melb Cup order of entry, so very borderline to get a start this year.  But if they miss out hed be perfect for the QE Stakes & Sandown Classic

There are two things about the Freedman clan Lord, that I have learned over the years.

1. They do not run horses in group 1 races, unless they think they have a hope.

2. They will give him every hope to get to the cup and if not as you say they will set him for a race, and he will run well in it.

If he is that low he would have to run in the Bart Cummings wouldn't he?

Unlike Waller who has apparently had 1000 starters in group 1 races.

Any more add ons to blur the punting situation?

Glad to see this guy secure a spot in the Melb Cup.

Hard to see him winning, but can box on for another top 10 placing.

Originally had him pegged as only a top 10 chance.

But Im starting to warm to him as the only long shot that could possibly jag a place.

Any love for him today by others?

i think Pike will suit him and get him to settle. He is a very tough fit and in form stayer, just wish he had drawn a bit better but he is a definate chance

Really pleasing return by Steel Prince today over 1800m.

I imagine Aust Cup maybe next, but should be a nice staying race over the Sydney Carnival for him - something like a Manion Cup or Chairmans Hcp.
