Outbreaks of the sexually transmitted infection (STI) syphilis are cropping up in Melbourne's outer south-east and west, alarming statistics show.

Victoria recorded more than 1400 cases of syphilis last year, with 560 infections being detected so far this year - despite multiple COVID-19 lockdowns in the state.

Syphilis is caused by a bacterium and transmitted through close skin-to-skin contact.

Melbourne hotspots for the STD include Brimbank, with 56 cases recorded last year.

Casey reported 42 infections, a rise from 27 cases in 2019, while 46 cases have been detected in Melton.

The cause behind the sudden surge in infections remains unknown.

But epidemiologist Eric Chow - who has been studying the state's syphilis epidemic - told 9new.com.au more sexual health clinics were needed in the affected areas to help prevent the outbreak from spreading.

"Sexual health services need to be scaled up in those areas," he said.

"Public health messaging about how STIs are transmitted, also symptoms, awareness and recognition is important.

These are the same areas within Melbourne that have had the highest rate of COVID 19. It makes one wonder if there is some correlation between the two outbreaks.

ps thoroughly enjoy a good Indian meal such as at the Two Fat Indians in Melbourne, however the partner's sister had a bad experience about 30 years ago.  So apart from the infrequent visit with friends an Indian feast is very much a matter, of "on your own Jose" gig for me.

General Paralysis of the Insane ( GPI ) and recent times has been appearing in the Northern Population.   New to Melbourne this century me thinks .Frightening ..      Some of these outbreaks may be related to interfering with immune systems .      .   Nothing gets proper investigation before Joe Public gets dosed up now days ...   A Lottery.

SC. I doubt you know much about the ethnic distribution over suburban Melbourne or have ever heard of the shires of Melton, Brimbank or Casey.  I suggest you do a little research on the ethnicity of residents in those shires where an SDT outbreak has been reported.

Of course most people in those shires engage in sexual congress, however why do you suppose the STD outbreak has been isolated to those three particular Melbourne shires and not in Box Hill ( predominately Chinese ethnicity) or Elwood ( predominately Jewish ethnicity ) ?

In Australia, condoms cost from $0.50 – $2 each from retail stores however condoms are also available for free from family planning clinics
