I find it hard to believe insurance companies would gamble in this manner ?

Why would insurance companies expect the horse to be tested first ?

I find this staggering.

Insurance companies are in the business of accepting risk in order to write policies and generate income.
Many companies:

. no longer require a medical examination from applicants before providing life insurance;
. offer house and contents insurance to people living in areas subject to natural events;
. provide car insurance for people with an ordinary past record; etc etc

The premium cost is of course relative to risk.

Potential stallions are sold without a fertilty test because the vendor simply isn't going to risk a potentially significant sale by agreeing to a fertility test.  The purchaser, for his part, takes out fertility insurance.

In order to secure fertility insurance the purchaser will need to provide data to the potential insurer, however that will be of a general nature and (yet again) won't involve fertility tests as the purchaser, just like the vendor, can't risk a low count and the consequent refusal of cover.

Here's an example of what one particular company requires before providing fertility insurance.  Sorry if it doesn't paste well, however the critical aspect is that there is no requirement for a fertility test as such.

QUESTIONNAIRE FOR A VETERINARY SURGEON EXAMINING

A HORSE FOR STALLION FIRST SEASON SUB-FERTILITY INSURANCE

Notes for the attending Veterinary Surgeon

The purpose of this examination is to assist insurers in assessing the potential of the proposed stallion to

achieve satisfactory fertility in his first season at stud. It is not a substitute for a general health examination

which will also be required by insurers.

Insurers recognise that some of the questions may be difficult or impossible to answer because of the

horse’s temperament or other factors. In such cases please simply record the words “NOT POSSIBLE” and,

if you consider it helpful or relevant to potential insurers, state the reason why.

Please provide full details on any answer to the questions below that would reasonably require qualification.

If more space is necessary please use the reverse of this form or attach a further sheet as appropriate.

If you require any further clarification on the terms of your examination, please contact:-

Age is not material
First year fertility insurance is contracted on the basis no testing has been done.
I have insured a number over the years inc one this year [5yo].You are looking at a premium of around 8 to 9% which includes death by accident.

Looking at the mares he covered on the stud book, a lot have been re covered by different stallions. Looks like conformation of fertility issues.

Back to Work
Tara Madgwick - Tuesday, 8 May 2012

Many of our readers have noticed the absence of Australia's globetrotting super sprinter Starspangledbanner from the Coolmore Australia roster this year prompting us to look into his whereabouts.

The Aussie bred hero of Royal Ascot in 2010 when he blazed to victory in the Group I Golden Jubilee Stakes, Starspangledbanner retired to stud in Ireland in 2011 before shuttling to Australia last spring.

As anyone who sent him a mare knows only too well, Starspangledbanner suffered fertility issues which have not improved since his return to Ireland.

He started the season in Ireland this year, but decreasing fertility has now curtailed his stud career with Coolmore electing to send the son of Choisir back into work with Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle as reported by Caroline Searcy on TVN's Thoroughbreds program on Tuesday night.

The first Northern Hemisphere bred foals by Starspangledbanner are currently being born and with youngsters like this baby ( a colt from Lulla Wing) below it's not hard to see why it's been so disappointing to lose the four-time Group I winner as a sire.

Those lucky enough to have a mare in foal to Starspangledbanner may have found themselves in an enviable position as his Australian foal crop due later this year will be his one and only and as such will be a rare and limited edition on the bloodstock market.

Starspangledbanner's sire Choisir continues to churn out quality runners with three new stakes-winners over the weekend (two in Australia and one in Ireland) and is sure to be popular for Coolmore again this year at the slightly reduced fee of $27,500.

Can't help but wonder, as has already been stated, that the use of Regumate on SSB has something to do with his fertility issues !!! Geek. Maybe just coincidental.

We still don't seem to know what his final fertility rate was for that first northern season (or how many 2013 foals will hit the ground up north). One foal, however pretty, does not make a Crop!  But if the was OK for the 2011 NHemisphere coverings, then what went wrong therafter? And if he wasn't, how come they tried him again up there this year??

Just add SSB to the list of stallions that have come through this yard that have had or still have fertility issues.

There were rumours around that he had a problem in Ireland during his first season over there. Coolmore more or less infered that it was only temporary, so most people with bookings here elected to use them. It became obvious very early in the season that he was having major problems - so only the supremely optimistic kept going back for more. I was told that most of the sperm were deformed, so it was really good luck for anyone whose mare was impregnated with strong healthy wrigglers.
What really surprises me is that they sent him back to Ireland after two disasterous seasons anyway.
I strongly believe that the Regumate given to him was the problem. If you haven't heard of it Regumate is a progesterone type of hormone used to stop mares cycling and to help keep the cervix closed during pregnancy which helps to stop infection gaining entry into the uterus and causing abortion. It is not recommended for males as it has been known to cause infertility.
What a shame that one of our best sprinters has been lost to the industry.

Know of many show stallions on regumate whilst competing then covering mares during breeding seasons with no problems,of course they are not covering 100 odd mares though

I think you will find that mature horses are not adversely affected by Regumate however it is an absolute no no for young developing horses.

This "off the packet use" of hormonal drugs such as Regumate and Equity with horses in training needs to be regulated. There needs to be transparency with the use of these and they should not be administered by trainers without the authority of owners/breeders. If given the choice I'm sure most owners would object if the potential side effects were declared. Particularly, if you intend to breed after racing. The warnings are all over the packaging!
We can't keep playing with nature here. Fillies are being left with shrunk ovaries and colts are chemically castrated. It has to stop!!

Straight, so sorry to hear that. I bought a mare once that had lost its previous foal due to a blood disorder Hemolytic anemia. However if you are aware of this prior to the foal being born that it is not an issue but this does sound a lot different to what you encountered. Tough game this can be at times.

Straight that is really bad luck. If your foal was suffering from septicaemia it means the foal contracted an infection while it was in the mares uterus. This would probably be the reason the foal came early. As the foal was already compromised it may have suffered from lack of oxygen to the brain during the foaling process. More often than not these foals look absolutely normal for about one - two hours, before they crash. That is why mares must be watched for a few hours at least after foaling as what you think is a healthy foal could turn into a ' dummy' soon after. A certain amount of dummy foals can be saved if they have veterinary attention as soon as these symptoms are noticed. What looks a normal foal starts to wander aimlessly around, stops trying to suck and can even start crashing around and bumping into things. They must be kept warm with rugs and blankets and put on to antibiotics immediatley, they have to be tubed with colostrum and be given plasma and other supplements. This is all very expensive but can result in a normal foal.
Mares that have a septic foal should be monitored very closely next time round; having her uterus scanned mid way through pregnancy can let you know how the pregnancy is progressing and if she needs anti- biotic treatment. She may need caslicking to stop the infection getting into the uterus.

Haemolytic disease is a different problem and is caused by the foals antibodies reacting against the mares after the foal has taken colostrum. If caught early the foal can be given a blood transfusion and should be okay. After that every newborn foal should be kept away from the mare for the first 36 hours and supplemented with another mares colostrum.

Straight's loss would have had nothing to do with the stallion. I don't know what they will do about giving a free return, hopefully some sort of compensation.

Rosemont Stud - News

The magnificent international sprinting sensation Starspangledbanner is returning to where it all began to continue his stud career.

A four time Group One winner, Starspangledbanner will stand in season 2013 at Rosemont Stud Gnarwarre, the farm where it all started for him.

Foaled and raised on the river flats and hills of the farm, his life journey has been extraordinary.

Winning the race now named in his honor, the Inglis Banner on Cox Plate day at his first outing, he went on to be the best sprinter/miler of his generation winning the Caulfield Guineas in devastating fashion and then taking on the best sprinters in the land to win the G1 Oakleigh Plate.

Then the subject of a lucrative sale to international breeding giant Coolmore, Starspangledbanner headed to Ireland to be trained by Aidan O'Brien to compete in the rich and prestigious international sprints. He was to go on and conquer the world.

Winning the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot, he proved unstoppable in the English summer going on and creaming the world in the July Cup to be crowned Europe's top sprinter.

At this time, Rosemont Stud invested in the horse for his stud career as a minor shareholder. As a young stallion with a big book of mares, Starspangledbanner struggled with fertility issues but still managed to get around 1 out of 3 mares in foal in a season in both hemispheres.

The 60 foals produced from those covers have had tongues wagging in both hemispheres and proved that, if fertile, he was to be a stallion of significant importance in the years to come.

However, it was then agreed by Coolmore and Rosemont to return to the track to let him mature and see if time and medical research could help his fertility plight. But as is quite often the case with horses that have lived the life of a stallion, his interest in racing never returned and his retirement will come as no surprise, despite still be able to place last season in a Group 3 race in Ireland.

It has been agreed between Coolmore and Rosemont that it is most appropriate that Starspangledbanner return to the stud he was born to stand alongside multiple G1 winner Toorak Toff for another tilt at breeding success.

With a more mature horse and some break throughs in fertility research, Rosemont principal Anthony Mithen said the star sprinter is well worth the effort.

"We will be trying some new fertility techniques that weren't available when Star last stood at stud. He is a little older and more mature and we take some real heart from the job that was done on Foreplay," Mithen said.

"Our bloodstock manager Dean Harvey oversaw the transformation of Foreplay from a sub-fertile stallion to a real commercial option, now batting at close to 80% fertility. Stem cell treatment really helped and from what we understand, Starspangledbanner and Foreplay's areas of concern are very similar," he said.

Mithen explained that the son of Choisir's book will be restricted to give every mare the very best chance of going in foal.

"Coolmore have been great through this process and we are looking forward to working with Starspangledbanner and giving Victorian breeders a world class breeding option, along with Toorak Toff and Danzero."

While he stood for $44,000 first time around, Starspangledbanner's fee is yet to be determined as Rosemont are seeking applications only. However, it is understood that it will be considerably less than first time around.

For an application or any more information, please ring Anthony on 0413486767.

The feel good story of the Autumn carnival has touched plenty, but it would be fair to say that they'll be a fair old Shindig in Ceres town over the remarkable win of Shinzig in the CF Orr stakes on Saturday.

With plenty of interest in the farm since a very successful sale launch at Melbourne Premier sale 2007, Rosemont has just opened new colt spelling yards. Twenty new yards at a size of 20m x 40m gives Rosemont the opportunity to service every client to their specific needs.

Built with five foot treated posts and state-of-the-art borderline plastic strands, the emphasis is definitely on safety.

"It looks a bit like Fort Knox, but that's great. The safer the yards, the better the spell for the horse and those of us pandering to every spellers' need!" said Suzanne Mowat, stable manager at Rosemont. The yards will be irrigated for future summers.

It is planned that a new stable block will be built alongside the yards to compliment the existing feature block of 10 stables and a horse walked also installed to ensure that whether they be spellers or yearlings, every horse is catered for specifically.

Don't know why anyone would bother with him given his fertility problems and that his best race performance was enhanced by outside influences.

Maybe it's just me but I thought the tweet from Rosemont this morning was quite funny. Book now for limited spots. Not the best choice of words for a horse with fertility problems, lol.

They took on Danzero when given the heave ho from Arrowfield and had known fertility issues due to his age. Now this bloke. They seem to be dipping their toe in but not taking the plunge. You would have to be mad to risk a mares breeding season on either of them. Then there is Toorak Toff who will have to do it the hard way.
They seem nice people but you would have to question the business model and therefore question whether to use them or not.
