hearing lots of rumours floating about that this fella is not getting any mares in foal. is there anyone out there that can put any truth to these rumours. yes or no?
it would be a shame if he was having problems, bloody nice horse who i thought had a good chance of making it in australia.

A friend of mine has had three misses out of three. My mare missed and I know someone else who has had a miss, so it's not looking good at this stage

From the regumate website

Side Effects--Stallions

  • An off-label use of Regu-Mate is to calm stallions down. According to Dr. Bob Judd, DVM, it can also cause fertility problems and should not be used.

Why would they have a case when Leon was outed for the use of the said hormone. It was not a secret and the effect of Regumate was well known at the time. I say more shame on the Irish outfit for not revealing the worries about the horses fertility after his first season in the homeland. 200 mares bred on a secret!!!!!

Do the Irish have an online studbook like us where you can find out how many mares he covered and how many he missed?  Tried looking up Wetherbys and got lost.

who's going to allow a fertility check if their selling? No way - coz if it is infertile it becomes unsaleable.
Therefore to cover the potential of a problem you have to take infertility insurance - it is an absolute requirement of insurance that the horse NEVER have been tested, so no one does - simple as that.

Miss Finland will be the same as others, what did Special throw and she was a champion sprimter up against Zedative Campaign king Redelva and others!!!
Its a business which is driven by Group1 winners which represents dollars but not always there offspring!!
Sometimes you can save a $$$ by bypassing saya Commannds and go to Court of Jewels etc and still have the same family lines for a much less price!!!
However if you have the millions to burn buy into all the bluff created by multiple group1 success!!!

Mares, including superior performers, have only 6 foals on average to prove their worth as broodmares.

As distinct from superior male performers who might have as many as 2500 foals over the course of their breeding life.

So we're potentially talking about 6 chances versus two and a half thousand.  The odds are clearly stacked against broodmares irrespective if their own racecourse performance.
It's hard to soar with eagles...

Cheers

most stallions do not start producing a higher sperm count until they have started serving mares, therefor most stallion of the track will test as almost infertile. This is why people get the insurance.
Horse breeding is like religion, if you don't really believe in what you are doing it is purely social

off of  2 different vets, apparently although the ejaculation volume may be high the sperm count on new to breeding stallion can be quite low.

shiner , most stallions will show fertility  and or lack of it ,at 2 yrs   but generally 4.5 yrs of age will see horse mature to ful fertillity ,   star spangle banner wasnt a baby when the deal was done , far from it ,stallion insurance is there for isuues arising out of infertillity  ie accidents etc etc

there is a 1 st season infertiliy  insurance for stallions, although very specified clauses !!!  this is based generally upon buying a young 2 yr old as stallion prospect  etc etc  not a 4 yr old  and the clauses in this insurance do indicate fertililty tests , !!

yeah, whatever Max - what would I know, only been full time in the stallion business for almost 20 years Confused.
However I can assure you that if you have fertility tested a sire prospect in any way shape or form you will NOT get any insurance cover - and the outgoing owner, trainer and new owner have to stipulate specifically that the horse has never been tested before you can get fertility insurance.
If I owned a star racing colt there is NO WAY that any testing would be done on him - what happens if it fails? I cant insure him, I cant sell him, he may as well be a gelding value wise. No owner is going to rsik a multi million dollar sale by testing prior to sale.
We've bought stallion prospects from all over the world - and the consensus is the same. No fertility test prior, and you then take out insurance on your stallion prospect in case he's a dud.
