Hi Guys , just after some advice on a stallion options for my mare this season , her name is Rebel Bride , I am breeding with the view to sell at this stage and don’t really want to head any further North than Victoria as I’m in Tassie and she will have to foal away , I’m thinking of the new kids on the block in Vic this year and would like to get some ideas from a lot more experienced breeding and pedigree smart people than me , any help would be greatly appreciated ??

What price do you have in mind, why a 1st season horse & what causes you to believe the resultant progeny will be commercially viable unless you expect her Needs Further colt to be successful early?

Up to 22000,doesn’t have to be a first season sire that’s just what I was thinking but  most of the proven stallions are to dear for me so trying to get in on the ground floor , I’m hoping the Colt gets going before this resultant foal would be Ready to sell , if not we would keep it to race .

No question at all in my mind: MAGNUS, MAGNUS, MAGNUS.

A proven sire, and matches up marvelously giving you Mr P 4f x 3m, Vain 4f x 5m, Lunchtime which goes so well with Vain 4m x 5f and Sibs Elated (dam of Vain) and Decess 5 x 5 x 6.

Others may disagree.

I agree that it is a very interesting pedigree.  If your interested in the younger brigade  I don't mind the look of Grunt, Hanseatic, Earthlight or even in your home state Alpine Eagle.  I love to cross lines of 13 to lines of 1 (High Chaparral and Shirley Heights).  A bit of 5h is always a bonus and I like the Sir Ivor 5m x 5f and the line of Sir Tristram (family of Hyperion).

A good one before your lass was Carringbush by Cerreto (1e) the family of Blenheim.  Cerreto was from the Hyperion sireline and Carringbush was inbred to Hyperion so to see Sir Tristram can't hurt.

here are two of the others.  Both younger stallions with G1's to their names.
With Grunt you find Pompeii Court from the 1-p family of Magnus and Vains sire Wilkes.  And a line of Sir Tristram.  Doesn't hurt to have the two 13 lines of O'Reilly and Grunt himself.

Earthlight is also a G1 winner and has the 1 family through Shamardal, troy, Ahonoora, Shirley Heights.  Plus Mr Prospector and Darshaan from the same family.  Also of interest is El Gran Senor from the same family a Telesto and Raise a Native

Now your mare is completely outcrossed in her first five generations.  It your looking to inbreed to one with lots of the Star Kingdom line of Hyperion you could take a look at Toorak Toff who has also moved to Tassie.  He also gives you Nijinsky to cross to Telesto and Raise a Native and the Habitat/Northfields cross.  THis pedigree is also a complete outcross in the first five generations.

The mare imo clearly deserves to go to either a proven stallion or a newbie that possesses commercial appeal.

It's interesting to note that Hanseatic and Magnus share the same female family, and the former also
reinforces Mr P.  They're the two that take my fancy.

Thanks very much for all your work their Furious , Hanseatic was where I was leaning out of the new boys and definitely think Magnus is the go to out of the tried horses in my bracket , I have an Alpine Eagle 2yo in work at the moment out of a Nicconi mare I had and have a Stratum mare also in foal to him with her first foal , early days but not going to well on the track here in Tas .

The mare is probably one of the best in Tasmania and has had success on the mainland. Her close relation Seababe made $200k in foal to Capitalist at Inglis earlier this year. If we have a look at other successful family members we see that they have been by a range of stallions in Encosta De Lago, Choisir, Moshe, Distorted Humor and Tinterosse. Interestingly the level of inbreeding within six generations is often very low, or if not, around 11%. I don't know how closely the suggestions above match with what has worked with the family. Her two foals have both had very close inbreeding to Mr Prospector. This has yet to be successful, but if that is the plan, then sending the mare back to Needs Further would be a wise strategy.
If we look at the stallions that have worked, and the related pedigree patterns, we see that Moshe is by Bel Esprit, and the mating of this mare with that stallion could not be discounted. Encosta De Lago is found as the sire of Needs Further and again, if this is the strategy he could be used again to ensure that the best result is obtained. Choisir is available as the sire of Starspangledbanner who stands in Victoria and would be a reasonable mating. If we look at the Capitalist/Seababe mating, it does not look overly strong, but Capitalist is a son of Written Tycoon, and it would seem that there appears to be some positives from a mating with that line to the family. One stallion in Victoria who is going OK is Rich Enuff who is a son of Written Tycoon, and it looks an appealing mating. We see sex balanced duplications of Marscay, Vain and Lunchtime which is very rare to see in a pedigree. As a left field prospect, Fiorente represents a largely outcross pedigree and brings in some real stamina into a family that is largely a 1000-1400m family but has proven successful when bred to get more distance. I doubt if it would be a true staying type but it may well be something that the family needs from time to time. It is hard to make this judgment without knowing a little more about the mare and her actual racing pattern. She is probably at the stage though that if the Needs Further or this foal do not perform, her value is significantly diminished. I would urge you to look carefully at all of your options.

Wow Progold , that’s an in-depth review of her , thanks for your thoughts on breeding with her , she is currently in foal to Needs Further again , had a very nice yearling Colt by him that I sold this year so hopefully he gets up and running to help her along . Fiorente is one I hadn’t thought of , I agree he should help on the stamina side of things , will definitely have a look at him .this breeding game sure can be confusing if your budget keeps you away from the top end Smile

Hey Wicky, don't ever be afraid to enquire about prices. The price you might see advertised isn't always the price actually paid for the service fee. Never ever hurts to ask studs what can they do. With lots of stallions about they need to be somewhat flexible af times.

PS I agree your colt is a lovely boy and don't be too despondent on NF, he had a hard year with all selling, he might just have a good one round the corner, then he gets back in favour again in the ring. Good luck with whoever you pick for her, she's a dandy mare to have!

There's a reason I have these three stallions highlighted: Grey Sovereign.  When Vain, Lunchtime, Marscay, and Grey Sovereign hook up, the result is SPEED.  The current flagbearers are Written Tycoon and All Too Hard.  Capitalist and Tinterosse both have GS via Kalamoun, whereas Choisir has him via Caro.

Dirty Work is a first-season son of Written Tycoon standing in Vic.  He brings the Grey Sovereign and they both bring Vain, Marscay, and Lunchtime.  Telesto, Rebel Bride's sire, descends from Best In Show via Sir Ivor.  Written Tycoon's grandsire Last Tycoon descends from Best In Show via Buckpasser.  Sir Ivor's dam Attica and Buckpasser are very closely related and they complement one another in pedigrees.

Lucky Vega is *just* a little bit different, lol.  He carries Grey Sovereign via Kendor and Caro, his sire is an exceptionally good stallion and his dam is a Cape Cross daughter of a Gr-1 winner, and he was early and fast. He is closely related to Endless Drama (by Lope de Vega out of a Green Desert mare).

If your mare is foaling early and you are willing to take a punt, Starspangledbanner is an awful lot of horse for the price.  As a son of Choisir he would bring in a Caro line, plus he has Grey Sovereign through his tail-female line which produced Circles of Gold to cover of Marscay.  His sales prices from 2020 to 2021 took a huge plunge -- not sure why -- but prior to this season, his yearlings averaged a fairly healthy $75,000 - $80,000.  Looking at individual sales, it was feast or famine.  As a proven sire in your budget whose bloodlines have worked with your mare's family, I put him on top, even with the well-known fertility challenges.

His son Brooklyn Hustle's 2nd dam is by Most Welcome, who is a genetic sibling to Telesto's dam Minnie Hauk.  Sir Gaylord, sire of Sir Ivor, appears in the pedigrees of many of Starspangledbanner's best runners, including through Drone, Habitat, Sir Tristram, and Grovesnor.

Thanks Petite , I will definitely be getting the best possible price I can , and am certainly hoping NF gets back in favour as she is brewing another one to drop this season .

Thankyou for your input Kimberley Mine , I do like Dirty Work also as a new boy option , still kicking myself after having her booked into Written Tycoon for her first season at 13750 and changing my mind , she isn’t due to foal till late Oct early Nov so Starspangledbanner might not be a viable option if it went wrong, and I hadn’t noticed Lucky Vega , will have to have a look at him , Thanks again .

KM is a really great judge whose opinion should always be respected.

However despite the good match believe Dirty Work is unbelievably overpriced at $19,800, and fwiw have conveyed that opinion to Garry Cuddy.  And for my trouble received a totally smart-ass response.  Reckon interested parties will be able to get him for $11-13.2k if they go in later rather than earlier.

But I'd be heading elsewhere given the far better performed Hanseatic is more realistically priced as is Magnus which always sells great in Tassie.

Hi Second Chance , fully agree with you re his price , did a Mating match on their site and he was a good match but thought he was way over priced for his race record ,

I though that Rich Enuff who is doing pretty good job at present was the strongest mating for the mare of the sons of Written Tycoon.

He's a solid choice.

I tapped Dirty Work as a better sales prospect based on being a first-year stallion by a hot sire and his female family is deeper and more active than Rich Enuff.  The other knock on Rich Enuff as a sales horse is that there's a growing split between his average and median figures -- meaning the sales average is pumped up by 2-3 strong sales and the rest are much, much lower.
