Not the greatest prognosis in the world:
Double
Wraps underwent bilateral intercarpal joint arthroscopy on 23rd June 2020. The
left distal radiocarpal bone had a large area of fragmentation that was
removed. The cartilage loss extended back a fair distance from the joint
margin. The right distal radiocarpal bone had an area of fibrillated cartilage
and soft bone that was debrided. The gelding
recovered well from surgery and was treated with penicillin, gentamicin and phenylbutazone
whilst in hospital. As discussed there
is a reasonable amount of bone and cartilage loss in the left carpus which
reduces long term athletic prognosis. Home Care: •
Give 5ml phenylbutazone orally once a day for another 4 days and 8ml Epiitalis
forte orally once a day until the tube is finished. •
Keep the knees bandaged until 2-3 days after the sutures are removed. Change
them every 2-3 days or as needed to keep them clean and in place. We have been
doing full limb bandages as he likes to rub them. •
Monitor for any lameness or discharge/swelling associated with the incisions
and please call with any questions or concerns. •
have the sutures removed by a veterinarian in 10- 14 days from surgery. •
Keep the gelding confined to a stable for one month followed by a yard for one
month. After
this, he should be paddock rested for 2-3 months before return to training. |

On the brighter side, Yulong January is now back at Caulfield and will possibly resume in the The Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes on 25 July.

Ownership can be demoralising enough but to get a better than average
horse & then endure the problems he has, is the stuff of nightmares
Reminds me of my 8yo, staying homebred who managed to be beaten in a photo at his 1st race start at B/rat over 1200m. His next was his last They sure test us emotionally & thru' the pocket! |

Too true on all levels Gay, but we live to fight another day. Yet again.
Money Maher was operated on a couple of months ago for an injury totally unrelated to his earlier problems: this time he somehow impaled himself just above the coronet band. And now Double Wraps. Total cost of surgery for both in the vicinity of $8k. Should've included them on my medicare card. |

Has accepted for the Group 3 Auries Star Hcp at Flemington on Saturday. Am quite apprehensive as (a) his two jump outs have been quite ordinary, and (b) regular rider Jye McNeil has hopped off him to ride Trope. Don't like to unnecessarily talk to the stable so really have no idea how he'll go, but fingers crossed he runs a decent race.

Was absolutely delighted with Harry's performance in running 5th beaten about 2 1/2 lengths today in a time of 1.10.58 which was pretty slick on a Slow 7 verging on a heavy 8.
Stable suggested he was only 85-90% going into the race, however he led until about the 120m mark where his lack of fitness started to kick in, but really hung in there considering they ran the last 600 in 33.15 secs. Will probably run next in a 1400m race at Caulfield in three weeks time where he should be very hard to beat.

Cheers Shawy. His prime aim has always been the Rupert Clarke (the old Invitation Stakes) towards the end of September however he needs to perform beforehand, so let's not get ahead of myself.

Yulong "Harry" January is going around in the open 1400m race at Caulfield on Saturday. Has drawn awful and with others pressing forward from inside gates plus no run whatsoever to the first turn don't think he can be truly competitive from out there.
Might be a blessing in disguise as an ordinary result would see him into a winnable Listed event two weeks later at Flemington rather than the vastly harder Rupert Clarke at Caulfield seven days later.

On the bright side, it couldn't be a better time of year which of course may have influenced their decision.

Well money Maher resumes in the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. This'll be his first start for 17 months and his third in 2 1/2 years. Suspect they'll give him an easy run and just hope he pulls up ok.

Well Gus has been back in work for about six weeks after a long layoff, and had his first fairly easy workout on the grass the other day. Wasn't comfortable the next day. Danny Williams and I had a good chat and essentially decided to retire him there and then. So he'll retire unbeaten after just the one run. Which means Yulong January is the last of Duty With Honour's foals left standing. He's been in the paddock for 3 months now so reckon something went wrong with him last prep. |

Shawy he had poor x-rays and we sold him pretty cheaply. His only issue since was an unrelated soft tissue problem last Spring and has otherwise been sound as a bell.
Conversely his half-brother Double wraps had perfect scans yet had nothing but knee problems when seriously tried. We're lucky Maher took Harry on. The fellow gives us so much enjoyment.

For those interested, Harry has come down with a bacterial infection, which may sound relatively benign but unless promptly treated it can lead to colitis or laminitis at best. Needless to say he's been appropriately treated but has done little more than have a walk and a pick since diagnosed, so it'll be a while before he's ready to re-enter work let alone reappear on race day.

First time I’ve seen him, he’ll give the best of them a run for their money in the hack ring when the time comes to change disciplines. Nice big rump on him, compact strong type. Bit of dressage, cavalleti work keeps them useful and switched on too.
Trainers must know what they’re doing
