Harry aka Yulong January has had a change of plans, is back in work after a brief let-up, and ran a hard held 2nd in Trial 1 at Werribee on Tuesday.

Don't know what the plan is at this stage, although the following are possibles:

a. a first up run at Flemington on 29 Feb into the William Reid Stakes at MV on 20 March; or
b. resume in Sydney in the Liverpool City Cup on 29 Feb or the Canterbury Stakes a week later.

Exciting times wherever he heads.

Let ups vs. a spell seem to have increased in the last few year, particularly among the 'factories', leading me to believe the mantra is "Get what you can, while you can".
This is a great business model for commercial interests but not for the owners looking for fun over a few years, nor the horse's longevity
This seems to apply most to those with ability & toughness but they're not machines, needing 6 weeks at least to heal 'hidden' wear & tear.
I do hope he does you proud (already has) 2nd Chance but he's the perfect candidate to make my point Big smile

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

Hope they're not asking too much Gay.  Spoke to a lady in the stable and she said he was kicking his brands off after a week in the paddock, so they decided to bring him back for a short sharp campaign.

She explained that had he stayed out for 6 weeks and then brought back into work he'd be ready to race in June which given the racing calendar meant all dressed up but nowhere much to go.

This way he can have his decent spell in April/early May and be ready to resume in early August with Spring races in mind.

Only time will tell.

Sounds like the horse is doing the talking, usually at home here anyway, if they are ready for a break you can tell by their attitude and how quickly they settle into relax mode!

Good luck and look forward to seeing Harry again.

Harry goes around in the El Dorado at Wangaratta today.

A 5 hour return trip for us so hoping he can get the money.

Disappointing.

Was told they couldn't pass up this $100k raceplus its VOBIS bonuses, so after his last start they turned him out for 2 weeks and since coming back had only one serious gallop and an easy trial to keep him fit and fresh.

But no fizz today in running fourth; Jye said he needed the paddock, and the stable foreman told me he'd be out for a decent spell come Tuesday morning.

Should’ve been in the paddock a month ago imo.
Looked gassed last start

I also thought he'd had enough after his prior run SD.

But hardly "gassed" as you put it, given his post-race recovery was normal and he gave away 3kgs to the winner who's since been beaten a neck in another Group race. Plus we comfortably beat the the third horse Streets Of Avalon by a length and he won at Group 1 level at his very next start.

However it's all neither here nor there now, as he cooled down with a bit of heat in a hind joint following Bendigo and clearly needed a few days care before heading to the paddock for a decent spell.  Thumbs Up

[QUOTE=Second Chance] And now Double Wraps, Duty With Honour's last foal.  Breaking the so-called "rules" re sex-balancing but nevertheless essentially a close-up KISS mating:  Danehill 3M x 3M: Bletchingly 4D x 5D, 5D.  Only time will tell. QUOTE]

For those still interested, Double Wraps will hopefully debut in the next 10 days or so.

He's the exact physical opposite of her stakes-performers Justify That and Yulong January who are similarly neat, whereas he's huge fellow.  One thing he does share with mum and Justify That is an outgoing (read extremely arrogant and rather aggressive) personality.

Possesses undoubted ability but earlier had a knee op (chip and scrape).  As a consequence, together with his bulk, it's taken a hell of a lot of time and patience to get him race fit this preparation.

Will give you all an update pre-race, or maybe just before post time if trainer Danny Williams thinks we might be a live chance at odds.  Wink

Exciting times irrespective.

Well Gus will finally debut in race 4 at Wagga tomorrow providing there isn't a last minute hitch.

Drawn badly, race may be too short for him, unproven in the going, may feel his knees when the pressure's seriously applied.  And they're the positives.  Embarrassed

But hope springs eternal and know you'll be barracking for him.

Thanks everyone, it was a huge thrill.  And that now makes it 5 surviving foals, 5 starters, 5 winners.

We elected to sell him at the Adelaide MM sale because his half brother Justify That had won two stakes events and in excess of $520,000 over there.  His X-rays were fine, though not one person looked at them.

Well you wouldn't want to know it, the horse was brought out of his box for inspection on just ONE OCCASION!!  You seriously have to wonder about the judgement of trainers when that type of thing happens.  Needless to say he sold for nothing, however I there and then introduced myself to Danny and his partner Mandy and said we'd be happy to buy back 10%.

Just hope he stands up to training as Danny suggested some time ago he was potentially the best horse in his stable despite being dumb as a plank, arrogantly aggressive, and bad kneed (we strongly suspect as a result of a paddock incident post purchase).

Anyway, the champers is finally on ice.

But not for long.  Wink

Unfortunately Gus was sore in his off-side knee the day after his win and his forward prospects don't look too flash.

Will update when we know more.

The latest:

Hello Allan and Cheryl,

I have spoken to the surgeons regarding attending to Double Wraps' lameness. He does require surgery to remove a flake of bone on his knee which is about to break off. He will have both of his knees examined under arthroscopic surgery to access any other damage and to see if either can be cleaned up any more. There is quite a lot of arthritic changes in his knees which is going to curtail his career eventually but let's hope he can come back and race a little longer before we have to retire him.

He will have surgery this Tuesday and leave tonight for Sydney.

Regards,

Danny Williams
