Thought I’d start a thread on the Melb Cup 3rd placegetter given he has just been purchased by Brae Sokolski & Ozzie Kehir.

Will be staying in Australia & be trained by Peter Moody.

The horse seems like he’s at his best at 3000m+ in his career to date, so will be interesting to see how he’s placed down here. Perhaps a ‘Manighar’ style makeover with Moods.

Melbourne Cup placegetter Spanish Mission will continue his career in Australia for Peter Moody.

Peter Moody released via Twitter a statement from owner Brae Sokolski who acquired the horse in a group including Ozzie Kheir and Jonathan Rosham.

"I would like to thank the former owners of Spanish Mission, Gary Barber and Brian Irwin, who specifically approached me and gave me the opportunity to purchase their wonderful horse and keep him on our shores," Sokolski said in the statement.

"Spanish Mission is truly a world class stayer and importantly still on an upward trajectory with so much more to come. We will advise of future plans with him in due course."

Trained by Andrew Balding, Spanish Mission finished third to Verry Elleegant and Incentivise in last week's $8m G1 Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) with Sokolski and Kheir part-owners of the quinella.

The son of Noble Mission had a less than ideal preparation for the Melbourne Cup, missing the first flight to Melbourne and his intended lead-up start in the Caulfield Cup due to muscle spasms. He then arrived on the second flight and days before the release of the Melbourne Cup field survived veterinary scrutiny for minor swelling in a foreleg.

Spanish Mission has raced 19 times for six wins and eight placings. He collected $550,000 for finishing third in the Melbourne Cup, the third biggest cheque of his career behind first prize for the 2019 US$1m Belmont Derby Invitational (2400m) and second prize for this year's US$2.5m Longines Turf Handicap (3000m) in Saudi Arabia.

It is the second time in three years that Sokolski and Kheir have purchased the Melbourne Cup third placegetter having bought Il Paradiso following the 2019 Melbourne Cup won by Vow And Declare.

Il Paradiso, a son of Galileo formerly trained by Aidan O'Brien, has battled injury issues and is yet to race for Chris Waller though contested a barrier trial in August.

Sportsbet have the Moody-trained Incentivise as the $13 favourite for next year's Melbourne Cup with Spanish Mission on the fourth line of betting, assessed as a $21 chance.

Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing

goes back to a full sister to Special.  That could be handy for breeding purposes.

That said Djebel he's what they use for Jumping stallions.  They get the stayers from the milers.  Or the very very fast Derby winners.

He'd have races like Sydney cup at his mercy where the top class like VE and incentivise won't go those races.

His breeding is spectacular to say the least. Surely he finds a nice home in NZ and gets their breeding stock back to the good days.

Is he allowed under the rules to have another start this prep?  Or only permitted 1 run?

The Zipping Classic at the end of the month would be an excellent race for him.

Would definitely suit NZ.

By a full brother to frankel, out of a Street Cry mare who traces back to many stallions including Sadlers Wells,Fairy King, Nureyev and Bachelor Duke.

Would suit Bachelor Duke mares, almost full outcross to Zabeel (only ND/Special cross) so will suit mares by Savabeel and many other Zabeel line sires.
Similarly outcross to Pins, O'Reilly so will suit mares from those families as well as Ocean Park.

Crosses with Reliable Man and Darci Brahma look very interesting and maybe even Zed mares!

May result in jumpers but can easily see some super horses come from the mix. Spanish Mission's siure Noble Mission the full brother to Frankel won 8 stakes races from 2000 to 2400. The half brother to Spanish Mission-Mokarris by More than Ready won a 1200m Listed race at Newbury as a 2yo, so there is plenty of class and speed amongst the pedigree.

He would suit NZ to a tee, but id love an Australian stud to take him, and we actually start to breed nice stayers, he could easily go to Danehill lined mares, for a double up, so they would be the "stout" stayers, so could race nicely from 1600m up.

Out and out stayers rarely make good stallions.

The best sires of stayers are nearly always 1600-2000m horses and to a lesser extent 2400m horses. Good stallions of any design need to have top class speed.

Hopefully Moody can get some top class speed out of him over 2000m and 2400m.

An admission of sorts.
What WAS the point of keeping Fifty Stars a stallion.
Could have raced for another 3 to 4 years.
How long before spanish Mission is gelded?

There is a difference between a fast stayer and an out and out stayer. Hopefully Spanish Mission and Peter Moody can prove he is more than just an out and out stayer.

Breeders should be climbing all over themselves to get to a horse like Fifty Stars. A pedigree to be top class from 1600m to 4000m.

Sound as a bell and a beautiful animal.

People keep blaming breeders for our lack of stayers. Fifty Stars and many others before and since prove that is not the case.

I'm honestly shocked that his sire started its career in the USA, where dirt racing is where the money is at and *no* horse with Danehill up close has had large-scale success.  The closest to being successful is Silent Name, by Sunday Silence out of a Danehill mare, who was one of the leading stallions in Canada for many years.  Woodbine, the largest racetrack in Canada, has a turf track and an all-weather track.

Racing-wise, if he tried the Adelaide, Sydney, and Tatt's cups I can't see anyone beating him in those races.  Incentivise probably won't be back on track until next year's Melbourne Carnival and Zaaki and Verry Elleegant will be going for the 2000-2400m races, leaving about $1.5m in prize money to be his for the taking.  Or, spell across the ditch, come back in the Wellington Cup --> Auckland Cup (and let NZ breeders get a look at him) --> Sydney Cup --> Tatt's Cup.

Mission Not Impossible

Peter Moody’s training partner Katherine Coleman rode newcomer Spanish Mission in a key gallop at Pakenham this morning.

Coleman told RSN’s Racing Pulse that the Melbourne Cup third placegetter was “super” and would almost certainly contest the Zipping.

“After the way he worked this morning, I was pretty keen to head towards the Zipping and I know Pete’s the same,” Coleman said.

“The Indication is that he’s a healthy, happy horse and as long as he continues to progress that way in the next week or so we’re both pretty keen to have another look at him and give him a run.

Will be insured to the gills as a stallion prospect to recoup the more than $1.5m+ paid for him.

Noble Mission hasnt proved to be much of a stallion - Moody wont be able to perform a miracle here.

Johannes V is a much nicer type, pedigree & form & he will be lucky to serve 50 mares.
