    Posted: 05 Nov 2018 at 2:43am
Hello,
I have spotted the Name of "Sound Check" in the starter field of the Melbourne Coup.

So I decided to write some Pedigree notes about him. Sound Check (Lando-Sky Dancing by Exit to Nowhere) from the Goody-Two-Shoes Family via Carpet Slipper-Vali, from the succesful French branch.
Lando is bred 3x3 Literat/Liberty FB/FS from the German "Lovely Naples" branch and succesful Sire. The dam sire Exit to Nowhere traces to "Coup de Folie", bred 3x3 Alamahmoud, bred the same way as Danehill and from the same Family. Irish River his sire o/o Irish Star, bred 3x5 Sweet Lavender, 4x5 Swynford; her dam Black Brook is 3x3 Plucky Liege.

Sky Dancing (dam of Sound Check) is bred 4x4 Klairon (more of the Marchetta Family) and the Granddam Saquiace is by Sagace (by Luthier) from the German Schwarzgold Family. Sagace brings in one more strain of the Vali, via Seneca-Chaparral-Val de Loir-Vali

He was bred in Germany by the Ittlingen Stud in 2013, was trained by Mr. Peter Schiergen, one of Germany's Top Trainers and had won in my Home Country several races. At 4: Baden Racing Steher Cup (L) 2800 meter, 2. Hoppegartener Steher Preis (L) 2800 meter, 4. Dt. St. Leger (Gr. 3) 2800 meter; at 5: Oleander Rennen (Gr.2)  3200 meter, Altano Rennen (L) 2800 meter, 2. Gr. Preis v. Berlin (Gr. 1) 2400 meter, 3. Gr. Preis v. Hamburg 2000 meter

He has a FB named "Scalo", with a better class, he won and was more placed in Group Races and stands at Sire at the "Haras de Logis" (France). He already have some winners, but with no "Black Type".

Regards from Germany, Ticino

Well done to Sound today.

He’s been racing really well this spring.  I know he already had 2 cracks at the Melbourne Cup in 2018 & 2019 but I’ve heard Mike Moroeney mention that he’s going better than ever and was desperate to get him in for 2020 as a genuine top 10 chance.

Group 2 success.  Enjoy a Beck's Ticino, or maybe a lovely La Roche riesling.  Thumbs Up

Hello,
many thankd for the info, about the win of "Sound" (former Sound Check) in Germany.

That are good news, after I heard about the passing of a good "Pedigree friend" of mine just a week ago.

Noticed Mike M0roney has him lining up in the Avondale Cup today.  Must be having another crack at the Auckland Cup next month.

Bit sad to see the prize money for the 2021 Avondale Cup at only $100k.  That’s exactly the same as it was 30 years ago when Coconut Ice beat the mighty Castletown.

Correct. Travelled to NZ 10 days ago
Story from R&S

Multiple Group Two winner Sound travels to New Zealand on Wednesday night as he bids to add some Cup wins to his record for trainers Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard.

The eight-year-old stallion is set to tackle the Gr.2 Wallen Concreting Avondale Cup (2400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday week with Troy Harris booked to ride.

The son of Lando is being set for the Gr.1 Barfoot and Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie on March 13, a race in which he finished second to Roger That last year.

The winner of the Gr.2 Zipping Classic (2400m) last November, Sound resumed with a luckless sixth at Caulfield on January 30 where he found traffic in the home straight.

The performance convinced Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Moroney his import had retained his zest for racing.

"He's an eight-year-old stallion but you wouldn't know it around the stable," Moroney said.

"He's a quiet, kind horse and a real favourite with everyone, so there will be a few sad faces at Flemington on Thursday morning when he's not in his box.

"He had no luck at Caulfield which was just the way the race was run and I think had he been able to get clear running he nearly wins the race which his stablemate Hang Man dead-heated with Defibrillate."

Sound  is no stranger to New Zealand having finished a gallant runner-up in last year's Auckland Cup before the COVID-19 shutdown prevented him from returning to Australia for a Sydney Cup campaign, meaning his stay in New Zealand was elongated.

"He went into last year's race at Ellerslie off a spring preparation and had the two runs in Melbourne before travelling last year," Moroney said.

"He retained a good degree of residual fitness from his last spring campaign and he is clearly up to winning a race like the Auckland Cup which would be terrific as he has a large percentage of New Zealand ownership.

"He's still a stallion and a lovely horse with a future at stud, but we're looking forward to winning some more races with him before then.

"He did a smart piece of work on the grass at Flemington on Tuesday and I'm confident if he runs up to his best he'll be the horse to beat in both races."

Another big race placing with 3rd in today’s MV Cup.

This guy is a really honest horse, still running tidy races as a 9yo.

Given he was well up the Melb Cup order of entry, I was surprised when he didn’t pay up in 3rd decs.

So must be concentrating on aiming at back to back Zipping Classics.

Another good effort by this veteran stallion today.

He may have won once since coming from Germany (2020 Sandown Classic), but geez he’s racking up a lot of black type placings:

3rd 2020 Torney Night Cup (L)
2nd 2020 Auckland Cup (G1)
2nd 2020 Bart Cummings (G3)
2nd 2020 Hotham Hcp (G3)
2nd 2021 Avondale Cup (G2)
3rd 2021 Auckland Cup (G1)
3rd 2021 Moonee Valley Cup (G2)
2nd 2021 VRC Queen Elizabeth (G3)

Hopefully another elusive win isn’t far away!

He sure has lived up to his name hasn't he? As you said not a winner but still well and truly paying his way, by my reckoning he's over a million in prize money in Australia and NZ now.

To the breeding buffs, what sort of prospect will he be at stud? Maybe stand as a cheapie somewhere and who knows?

Hello,
many thanks for all the updates of the racing career of "Sound".

It would be nice to see him standing as Stallion in another part of the world. I already wrote a few notes about his ped.

regards, Ticino

Trainer just said option of backing him up at Pakenham next weekend.
Will then head to NZ for the Auckland Cup before retiring to a stud in NZ (if they can find the right home for him)

He's the staying version of Rebel Dane for mine, except without the G1s to his name.  But like Rebel Dane he has fronted up prep after prep and ran honestly.

For the breeding buffs, if you were breeding to race, would a Rebel Dane/Sound be a more attractive prospect given their career longevities and soundness, or would you prefer one of the here today gone tomorrow 3yo stars?

I'm hardly a breeding buff, but I'd consider soundness/longevity and consistency a higher priority than winning big races

Hello,
nice to read some good news about "Sound Check" and his racing carerr in AUS and the plans to stand him in NZ.

Luckily he remained a colt, instead to geld him, as happened to so many imports.

Btw, Laccario (by Scalo, his FB) will stand in 2022 in France as Stallion, according a report in our racing paper "Sportwelt".

Best regards, Ticino

That would be my thought process as well, both Rebel Dane and Sound have produced long careers competing at or near the top level over their respective distance ranges.  I feel like these colts like Ole Kirk, The Autumn Sun and others that barely if ever race out of their own age group and don't see the track beyond their 3yo season are all about get in and out and make the quick bucks in the breeding barn before the next one comes along.

This is just looking from the outside in of course, I'm interested to see what breeding buffs think.

He’s a bit like a fellow import Dandino, who is standing in Victoria and has a couple of nice young ones. Recently sired his first city winner in Adandiman

He's running in the G1 Zabeel Classic at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, if he reproduces his Zipping Classic run, this may be his chance to grab that elusive G1 win?

German entire Sound was bought for two-mile success at Flemington but his first win over the distance in the Southern Hemisphere may come at his final racetrack start at Ellerslie on Sunday.

A 3200-metre winner at Group 2 level in his homeland, Sound is 58kg topweight for the NZ$500,000 G2 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m), which will be held under set-weights-and-penalties conditions.

The nine-year-old son of Lando has run in the previous two editions of the Auckland Cup, when the race carried G1 status, finishing second and third.

"He's really well, he's going to strike a pretty weak Auckland Cup and if he's ever going to win a two-mile race for us it's going to be there as it looks the right race," trainer Michael Moroney said.

"But in saying that he has been placed in the race twice without winning it, so hopefully it's a case of third time lucky."

After winning his second-successive G2 Zipping Classic (2400m) at Caulfield on November 27, Sound has been unplaced in two 2000-metre weight-for-age races in New Zealand.

His latest outing on a Soft 7 surface in the G1 Herbie Dyke Stakes at Te Rapa on February 12 saw him settle three wide with cover toward the rear of the field and pass a few rivals late for sixth, but he was beaten by more than seven lengths by the winner Coventina Bay.

"Leith Innes hopped off him last start and thought considering the (Soft) ground and the work he had to do on him, that he went well," Moroney said.

"He's been fitted up for the Auckland Cup with a fair bit of work in between, a gallop between races at Matamata, and he had a nice gallop there on Tuesday morning, so we're happy with him."

Victory in Sunday's Auckland Cup would elevate Sound past the $2 million prizemoney barrier and improve his chances of finding a home at stud.

New Zealand bookmakers have Sound as second favourite for the Auckland Cup at $4.50, with Concert Hall the favourite at $3.50.

Really excellent racing career, might have racked up more placings than wins here in Aust-NZ but he was always thereabouts trying his best and running honestly.

Good luck to him as stud.  Hopefully he gets well patronised over there in NZ.

And if they can't find a stud for him in NZ you'd hope he might well find a home in Germany.

Still trying to find a home at stud. If they can’t, he’ll come back to Australia and be put back into work for another season.
