He’s been briefly mentioned in the Lloyd Williams posts, but I thought that an English Derby winner being trained & raced in Australia at least deserves his own thread.
Read an article this week that mentioned that he is the first English Derby winner to be gelded since 1816 winner Prince Leopold (who sadly died during the gelding procedure). Look forward to seeing how Serpentine’s career unravels down here in Australia. Judging by his Ascot Gold Cup & Goodwood Cup failures he doesn’t seem like a marathon stayer. So hopefully aims up in 1800-2400m races over the Spring.

His 3 best performances were when he was allowed to dictate. I doubt he can lead tomorrow but once he gets up to 2000 and 2400 he should be able to dictate. |

he's had a lot of soundness issues so that is why they had him being gelded. he's been much better since the procedure. I won't be betting up just yet, but will keep an eye on him.

I agree with djebel. Didn’t scream back me next time but an acceptable enough run to blow out the cobwebs.
Trucked into it nicely on the turn & for a fleeting moment I thought he might surge to the front but his conditioning gave out the straight.

A little stroll up the straight six would imo be far more beneficial than a mile for one so big and burley , this would have been the kickoff for " the great man " no doubt George H. may have gone 1400 , but of course that's " australianism. " for ya, 16 cups .

That is prehistoric Australianism when they had zero competition.

Irrelevant comment if you're referring to Carioca's post.

We saw what stroll up the straight 6 did for Alandi.
I guess that is irrelevant as well ?

Zero competition, it's presence or absence, is entirely irrelevant in response to and given the context of Carioca's post where he simply suggested that stayers didn't then, nor now, necessarily need to resume over 1600 or even 2000m. Particularly when as big as houses when doing so.
Carioca may be right or wrong, however your reference to zero competition and prehistoric Australianism appears to be little more than cultural cringe or Europhobic jingoism.

Well he gets the services of Johnny Allen for Saturdays Archer Stakes. Any chance of sharp improvement from him?
He actually doesn’t need to win to make the Cup field, he can jump up as high as 17th in order of entry if he can just run 2nd or 3rd. Some of these imports do just need a lot of racing to get fit & then they get into some form. I remember Savage Toss in 1990 looking like a slow coach after a 4 or 5 runs then he suddenly won the Werribee Cup at 66/1, ran a monster race for 5th in Melb Cup & won the QE Stks on final day.

I'd like to see him perform well but at this stage his Derby win seems a bit of a fluke thanks to some out of the box riding tactics and he's done little since to prove he's a top line stayer.

King of the Castle (Serpentines little bro) is scratched from the Archer Stks on Saturday. So if they are hoping to still get into the Cup, will need a lot of luck & drop outs from those above him in the order of entry.

That’s more like it, finally a glimpse of form.
Looked like he was going to capitulate at the 800m but kept fighting hard all the way up the straight. Does John Allen have a Melb Cup ride? Sounds like he’s going to accept for the final 24. That said Lloyd may well scratch on Tues morning.

Would have to be the first time an English Derby winner has ever raced on a Qld race track!!
No, I don’t want to back him in todays 4 horse field, but will be curious to see if GaiBott can coax the best out him. Hopefully he’s going well enough to run in winter carnival staying races the likes of the Premiers Cup 2400m & Brisbane Cup 3200m.

Did not require his best to win that but a very nice effort just the same.gave the favorite 5.5 kilos and a flogging.

Just nosed out in the Premiers Cup today, but Gai’s certainly got him racing really well.
Will be a good story if she can win a big race with him, after his initial poor form when trained at Macedon Lodge.

Not sure what to make of this fellow going to the Q22 rather than the Brisbane Cup. I’d expected to see him in the latter race.
Maybe he is better suited at 2200m rather than stretching to 3200m? Perhaps Gai & Adrian think he’s just going that well they might as well tackle the $1.2m race rather then the $400k race?

Well beaten by Athabascan today in the City Tatts Cup, but thought this guys performance running 2nd over 2400m at his first for the spring was a really good one.
Didn’t shirk his task in the straight & certainly a pointer to a good spring ahead. The Metropolitan Hcp &/or ATC St Leger both within his scope. Who knows perhaps Lloyds only potential Melb Cup runner. Don’t think any of his O’Brien horses in Ireland are much good.

I know Athabascan is not a great gauge LH but he was third behind Arapaho in the Canberra Cup in the autumn and that winner came out and won the Tancred at his next start.
Though Serpentine had to work a little early but thought his run was very good for the future. Will get harder from here on in but he and Cleveland could be Lloyd's only Cups hopes this spring.
