I see Viktor is faithfully carrying Putin's water for him. The only European country to oppose Ukraine joining the EU. The others are not happy.

With the Putin wing of the US Republican Party cutting off funding for Ukraine, the new British Foreign Secretary, former Prime Minister Lord David Cameron has flown to Kyiv and assured Ukraine that they will get whatever they need from Britain.

Ukrainians refusing to fight for ‘corrupt government’ – WaPo

Potential recruits would often rather bribe their way out of the country than join a military “rife with incompetence,” the newspaper reported

Draft-age Ukrainians are unwilling to fight for President Vladimir Zelensky’s “corrupt government” and avoid conscription through bribery, forgery and perilous attempts to flee to neighboring countries, the Washington Post reported on Friday.

Within days of Russian troops entering Ukraine, Zelensky ordered the country’s borders sealed for men aged 18-60, stationing extra guards along the frontiers to stop potential soldiers from leaving. Now, with Zelensky’s former aide claiming last week that Ukraine has lost as many as 300,000 soldiers, fresh men are in short supply.

“Honestly, we need more soldiers. The professional military personnel are running out,” an assault team leader with Ukraine’s 68th Brigade told the American newspaper.

Kiev has repeatedly expanded its conscription efforts, taking in older men and those previously deemed unfit to fight, while reports suggest that teenagers could soon be pressed into service. Ukrainian authorities have already dropped a rule exempting men under 28 with no previous military experience from the draft, yet several civilians in this category told the Washington Post that they have no intention of showing up.

Send Ukrainian men home to fight – German MP

A 20-year-old man said that he was “not eager to risk his life in the military, given stories he has heard from friends in the ranks about insufficient training and endemic corruption, such as paying bribes to officers to receive vacation leave,” the Post reported, noting that “many are less than eager to fight for a military and national government that is viewed as rife with corruption and incompetence.”

Faced with battlefield conditions often described as a “meat grinder,” as many as 650,000 conscription-aged men have left Ukraine, the BBC recently reported, while “hundreds of thousands” more are evading service within the country, Deputy Defense Minister Natalya Kalmykova stated in October.

Those fleeing stow away in cars, bribe border guards, or take their chances trekking through forests and crossing rivers to enter neighboring Romania, the Post reported. Guides reportedly offer safe passage through the wilderness for $1,200 and up, while “the going rate for bribing a guard on the Moldovan border is $300.” Those staying in Ukraine often bribe military officials for papers marking them as exempt from service.

Some conscripted Ukrainian ‘marines’ can’t swim – BBC

“Even if you’re missing a leg, they’ll say you can still fly drones,” one deserter told the newspaper, explaining that he fled to Romania because “ordinary Ukrainians are fighting and dying while members of parliament and other elites cruise around in Mercedes and other fancy cars,” in the Post’s words. Others didn’t make it, including a 46-year-old man who froze to death last month.

The manpower shortage has crippled Ukraine’s ability to retake land from Russian forces. Speaking to the BBC last week, a Ukrainian soldier said that his men had been promised several brigades to launch an operation into the Russian-held eastern bank of the Dnieper River near Kherson. Instead, he said that he received a handful of individual companies of young conscripts.

“We need people, but trained people, not the green ones we have there now,” he told the British broadcaster. “There are guys who had spent just three weeks in training, and only managed to shoot a few times,” he continued, adding that “some of our marines can't even swim.”

A critical victory for Ukraine on EU accession after not so good news all week

The EU agreed to open accession talks with Ukraine. The decision was unanimous after Orbán left the room

The EU also agreed to a €50 billion lifeline for Ukraine's war-struck economy 1/
The European Council also decided to open accession negotiations with Moldova, grant candidate status to Georgia, and open negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina once criteria are met 2/
In the lead-up, Orbán stressed it was too early for the EU to open accession talks with Ukraine, but he allowed the unanimous decision by leaving the room 3/
Orban posted an angry text on Facebook, contrasting his position with the other 26 EU countries: "EU membership of Ukraine is a bad decision. Hungary does not want to participate in this bad decision, and therefore stayed away from the decision today." 4/
Also, I expect the blockade of Ukraine in Poland and other Eastern European countries to soon be over 5X

How Hungary Undermined Europe’s Bid to Aid Ukraine

Prime Minister Viktor Orban used E.U. rules on unanimous decisions to sink a $52 billion package strongly backed by larger countries.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/17/world/europe/hungary-ukraine-eu.html

The European Union has a population of around 450 million and one of the world’s biggest economies.

So how is it that Hungary, a small country with only 10 million people and a lackluster economy blighted by high inflation, this past week steamrollered Europe’s plan to throw Ukraine a financial lifeline worth $52 billion?

The Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orban, torpedoed the aid package, strongly supported by much bigger countries like Germany, France and Poland, by exploiting the power of veto held by each of 27 member states over key decisions relating to foreign and security policy and spending.

The requirement for unanimity on important matters, designed to ensure that small countries have a voice, but which many see as a grave design flaw, means that no decision gets taken unless everyone is on board.

Other European leaders have mostly shied away from threatening to use, never mind actually wielding, the veto. But Mr. Orban has embraced it as a disruptive weapon in his battles to shape policy and engage in what Daniel Freund, a German member of the European Parliament and critic of the Hungarian leader, described as a “constant game of extortion and blackmail.”

An honest politician is one who when he is bought will stay bought.

While they can still donate individually, as they have done all along this silly rule is moot.

Bigger issue comes when unanimous vote is required for EU ascension.

Mongolia’s ex-president seems to have taken on a new vocation as a history teacher – and his first student is Vladimir Putin.

It is a tough job, but someone has to do it after the Russian leader’s uninterrupted rant about eastern European history during an interview with Tucker Carlson.

Running circles around the former Fox News presenter, Putin attempted to justify his bloody land grab in Ukraine

Deciding to school him, politician Tsakhia Elbegdorj shared a map pointing out he has much to lose by relying on history for modern territorial claims.

He posted on X: ‘After Putin’s talk. I found a Mongolian historic map. Don’t worry. We are a peaceful and free nation.’

The vessel Caesar Kunikov sunk fittingly on Valentine's Day 2024 was named after the Soviet war hero Tsesar L'vovich Kunikov who was killed in battle in Novorossiys'k  - during WWII  14 February 1943.

Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has died, the prison service of the Yamalo-Nenets region where he has been serving his sentence said on Friday.

Mr Navalny, one of the most vocal critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin, had been in prison since February 2021.

Late last year, he was moved to a penal colony in the Arctic Circle.

Russian state news agency TASS reported that Putin had been told of Mr Navalny's death.

In a statement, the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District said Mr Navalny "felt unwell" after a walk on Friday, and "almost immediately lost consciousness".

It said that medical staff had been called, but that they were unable to resuscitate Mr Navalny.

It said the reason of death was being established.

Mr Navalny, 47, was first jailed in 2021 for 11-and-a-half years on fraud and other charges he said were bogus.

Last year, he had almost two decades added to that sentence for various offences, including funding extremism, which many observers decried as politically motivated.

“It is so much nicer than any city in my country,” he said. “It is so much cleaner and safer and prettier, aesthetically, its architecture, its food, its service, than any city in the United States.”

And the Moscow subway? “There’s no graffiti. There’s no filth. There are no foul smells,” Carlson said. “There are no bums or drug addicts or rapists or people waiting to push you onto the train tracks and kill you. No, it’s perfectly clean and orderly.”

And grocery shopping? It’s a bargain! Carlson goes shopping in Moscow, spends less money than he expects and says the experience radicalized him against America’s leaders. He doesn’t seem to understand that Russians spend four times as much of their income on food as Americans, and that prices are cheap because Russia is a poor country with a weak currency.

It is of course true that Moscow has a beautiful subway, and I’ve no objection to commentators pointing that out — or wondering aloud why American cities can’t have mass transit as nice. But it is profoundly troubling when American sycophants seem eager to whitewash Putin’s brutality, largely ignore his victims and score political points at home in ways that burnish Russian dictatorship and diminish American democracy.

They do have excellent public transport, the subways are something else. Big deal though, I suspect they are good in a lot of places, doesn't mean sht, in fact its usually a sign of a dictatorship.
