What does Putin want? His aims go well beyond Ukraine. As the Atlantic’s Anne Applebaum summarizes: He “wants to put so much strain on Western and democratic institutions, especially the European Union and NATO, that they break up. He wants to keep dictators in power wherever he can, in Syria, Venezuela, and Iran. He wants to undermine America, to shrink American influence, to remove the power of the democracy rhetoric that so many people in his part of the world still associate with America. He wants America itself to fail.”

Trump’s foreign policy sought to do much of what Putin wants to achieve, including intimidating Ukraine by withholding vital defensive weapons. Trump, like his role model in Moscow, favored weakening NATO, elevating dictators (from China to Turkey to North Korea to Hungary to Russia), undermining democratic elections, demonizing the media (the best check against power-hungry politicians) and finding common ground with kleptocratic-style governments.

None of this was based on America’s interest, but it was in the interest of wannabe authoritarians and illiberal regimes. As Fiona Hill, a former Trump adviser and brave witness in the former president’s first impeachment hearings, put it: "There’s no Team America for Trump.  Not once did I see him do anything to put America first. Not once. Not for a single second.”

I might be missing something but I see the Russia/ Ukraine thing as a European problem. Not sure why any non-European nation needs to get involved, other than offering aid to Ukraine if a war breaks out.

And you're responsible for teaching children??  If you don't understand that the situation has truly global implications involving nations in each and very continent who thus have their own future security and  interests to consider you, and your pupils, would be far better off were you in permanent retirement. 

Then again you probably teach woodworking.

Anyone reckon this isn't of huge importance and concern for nations other than in Europe?

Europe is on the brink of its worst war in decades with Russian troops moving into eastern Ukraine as part of a mission that western countries believe will be used as a pretext for an invasion.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday ordered his Defence Ministry to dispatch troops to “maintain peace” in eastern Ukraine’s two breakaway regions, in a significant escalation of the crisis.

Former president Donald Trump on Tuesday hailed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s move to recognize two breakaway regions of Ukraine and deploy troops into the rebel-held territory as “genius.”

In an interview with the conservative “Clay Travis and Buck Sexton” radio show, Trump said he was impressed by news of Putin’s actions.

“Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine — of Ukraine. Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful,” Trump said. “So Putin is now saying, ‘It’s independent,’ a large section of Ukraine. I said, ‘How smart is that?’”

Trump said Putin will now “go in” to Ukraine “and be a peacekeeper.”

“That’s strongest peace force … We could use that on our southern border,” he said. “That’s the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re gonna keep peace all right. No, but think of it. Here’s a guy who’s very savvy … I know him very well. Very, very well.”

LOL, did you hear what Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov did when he met with his British counterpart, the British Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss?
Lavrov asked the foreign minister whether she would ever recognise Moscows sovereignty over the Voronezh and Rostov regions, to which she replied, "NO".
One problem with that, those regions have always been in Russia.
It was a loaded question by Lavrov, showing that Truss and the Anglo politics had zero understanding of the history or geography of Russia or the Ukraine.
That's a big LOL from me.

Just to be clear, that's like the British Foreign Minister asking the Russians whether they would recognise Bristol and Birmingham as part of England, and having the Russian reply, "No, we can't do that"
