One of Australia’s pioneering globetrotters, Choisir, has died at age 22, Coolmore Australia confirmed on Tuesday. On the racetrack, the son of Danehill Dancer was one the best sprinters of his generation, winning seven races and more than $2.2 million during a 23-start career for Newcastle trainer Paul Perry. His greatest feat came at Royal Ascot in 2003 where he won both the Group 2 Kings Stand Stakes (1000m) on Tuesday and the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes (1200m) on Saturday, becoming the first Austrlain-trained horse to taste success at the iconic meeting. As a stallion, Choisir has sired 100 Stakes winners and his 11 individual Group 1 winners include another Royal Ascot hero, Starspangledbanner, as well as Sacred Choice, Olympic Glory and Breeders Cup winner Obviously. He was pensioned from the breeding barn at the end of the 2020 season. Coolmore Australia’s Tom Magnier said he was a “dream” stallion for the global operation. “I was lucky enough to be at Ascot in 2003 to witness his incredible triumphs on the Tuesday and then the Saturday where he was ridden by Johnny Murtagh,” Magnier said. “It was a great achievement for his trainer Paul Parry and paved the way for future Australian sprinters to compete with distinction on the world stage. “Since he retired to the farm in 2003 he has been a favourite with all those who have worked with him, especially our long time Stallion Manager Gerry Ryan who was particularly fond of him. “Choisir was the ultimate professional in all he did and every stud dreams of having a stallion like him. “We are so grateful to him and he will be sorely missed by the entire Coolmore team.” Choisir’s legacy will continue via the deeds of his stallion sons, including Starspangledbanner, Divine Prophet and The Mission. |

He held his own as a stallion, up against all the imported big names. He always had a decent horse somewhere. He was a tru blue Ozzie boy and he did himself and us proud.

Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

One of the most underrated horses this century.
He was like Vintage Crop. He did something so outstandingly rare, that it fooled trainers, experienced racing men, into thinking they could do the same thing for decade. In 1993 Vintage Crop made our stayers look so ordinary, that any trainer in Europe thought they could send a listed horse out and win the race, and they also sent the really top grade stayers as well, not understanding that they needed a horse who could adapt to our conditions and racing style. When Chosir won the double at royal Ascot (the only time in the history of these two races that it has happened), every Australian trainer with a champion sprinter thought they could just turn up and do the same, until everything became clear and it was quite obvious that Choisir was an very very very good sprinter who adapted to the conditions, the travel and the adulating track at Ascot. Top quality racehorse and a excellent tradesman sire, who was reliable and on his day brilliant.

Well said aa. A wonderful racehorse and sire. (And only 22!) He was underrated for all his achievements but I hope his legacy continues for a long time. RIP Choisir

The undulating track.
He did get a lot of adulation for his efforts.

The horses are THE stars of this sport we love. And Choisir was one of the BiG stars.
What a week he had at Ascot. What a performance he put on down the straight in Cup week before that. Green as grass, all over the place, but a star was born. What a looker too. And a great stallion.

Can anyone remember what they bet about him in that Kings Stand Stakes? I see an SP of 25-1 but I was sure they bet much more than that at some stage.

All I can remember is his glowing coat. A beautiful chestnut nugget of a horse. And he really struck a purple patch because while good in Australia he was being beaten on a regular basis. Loved his head as well.
