So rather less than half of Cup winners have won at open WFA Group 1 level over the last 22 years.

Thanks Jamal.

Thanks Jamal.

Yes that's right and the way I formatted the list was G1 WFA wins before and/or after their Cup wins

What a rough race that Cup was, especially down the straight the first time. You wanted to be on pace, first three around the home turn were the first three home.

The Hind should of at least placed in that Cup

Also Djebel, I highly doubt we will see a G1 WFA winner only carry 50kg in the Cup and win and I also doubt we will see, unless on the rare occasion, a Cup winner drop a massive 8kg from its previous start into the Melbourne Cup.

Where's Ticino? I know Ticino likes his German horses.

What a lot of people may not know is that Rogan Josh also travelled and ran in the Hong Kong Vase in December 1999. The top 5 finish in the Vase was probably Rogan Josh's best performance ratings wise. The field included Indigenous & Borgia . Ticino, Borgia was a German horse who 2 yrs prior in 1997 ran 3rd in the Arc. Rogan Josh only finished 2.5 lengths off Borgia in the Vase. A good effort after a busy spring campaign.

That would make Rogan Josh the last surviving Melbourne Cup winner from the 20th century. But no more.

So of course Kenny had the last laugh and this actually started a new segment on the show whereby Kenny would have his say and Freedman would provide a rebuttle. All in jest of course but they were funny times.

Then of course there were the jokes that followed along the lines of......'went to restaraunt last night and Rogan Josh was on the menu. Obviously winning the Cup wasn't good enough'. LOL

RIP legend.

Pardon My Dust - you mentioned it, well here it is. Maybe good luck that I found it.....go to the 36 minute mark of this clip and you will see Ken Callendars comments and then Richard Freedman's comments.

Also at the 46 minute mark Richard Freedman gets more stick as well.

Good to see Rogan Josh (R.I.P) finally get a Stakes race names after him...long time coming in WA racing.

https://www.perthracing.org.au/calendar/2023-06-24/rogan-josh-stakes-day

But what was the race called initially? Anyone know? It gets difficult to keep track of when race names get changed.

I'm going to suggest that this is a new race for horses who ran in the G3 Strickland Stakes to progress to.
Seeing Manchester United relegated would mean more than words can describe to me.

Could be the Strickland although they had that set up for the 24th June over 2000m.  A race distance and name change isn't beyond the realm of possiblities.

In mid-June, the WATC used run to a Listed 2200m race at Belmont called the Helena Vale Cup.  However the race was deleted after 2005.  This race was then a lead up to the G3 Belmont Winter Cup over 2400m in July which was also deleted after 2005.

The club resurrected a 2200m race after the Strickland Stakes a couple of years ago called the Swan River Vase.  Won in past years by quality WA stayers like Material Man (2020) & Come Play With Me (2019).

So it appears that the Rogan Josh Stks is the new version of the Helena Vale Cup / Swan River Vase.

Check this link, it doesn't appear to be a stakes (Group/Listed) race. Just a +84 rating race. Usually if it's a stakes race it will state if it's a Geoup or Listed event.
