The Gp3 Craven Stakes for 3yo colts & geldings over a mile at Newmarket often throws up a colt with a future & this year's winner looks well above average.
Field Of Gold (3c Kingman x Princess De Lune, by Shamardal) is a nice grey colt owned by Juddmonte who last year won the Gp3 Solario Stakes. He should be one of the better chances in the Two Thousand Guineas.

The Gp1 Prix Ganay over 10½ furlongs at Longchamp has been won by Sosie (4h Sea The Stars - Sosia, by Shamardal) who defeated Map Of Stars & Royal Rhyme.
Sosie has now won 5 races from 8 starts. Last year he won Gp1 Grand Prix de Paris, Gp2 Prix Niel, ran 3rd in Prix du Jockey Club & 4th in Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

The Gp1 Two Thousand Guineas for 3yos over a mile at Newmarket has been won by Ruling Court (3c Justify x Inchargeofme, by High Chaparral) defeating Field Of Gold who probably started his run too late but charged home with Shadow Of Light in 3rd place.
At his previous start, Ruling Court easily won the LR Jumeirah 2000 Guineas at Meydan.

In an interview with Matt Chapman, Kieran Shoemark has admitted that his ride on Field Of Gold was an absolute disgrace & he deserves all the abuse that has been directed at him.
He just sat there like a stuffed dummy while William Buick tmade his winning move on Ruling Court. Had he reacted when he should, Field Of Gold wins easily. Gosden needs to find a better jockey.

The Gp1 One Thousand Guineas for 3yo fillies over a mile at Newmarket has been won by Desert Flower (3f Night Of Thunder x Promising Run, by Hard Spun) who defeated Flight with Simmering 3rd.
Desert Flower is now unbeaten in 5 starts. Last year she won the Gp1 Fillies Mile & Gp2 May Hill Stakes.
It has been an incredible weekend for her owners, the Godolphin team. They won the Guineas double at Newmarket as well as the Kentucky Oaks & Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

Ruling court also had a far better turn of foot. That to me was the difference, not so much the ride

If that is the case (and it probably is to a degree), then it is all the more reason why Shoemark should have started his move half a furlong earlier. As can be seen in the photo, Buick had gone for home while Field Of Gold was still hard held by Shoemark.
And Shoemark has already admitted that he made a mistake so there can be no argument.

The Gp1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains for 3yo colts over a mile at Longchamp has been won by the favourite Henri Matisse (3c Wootton Bassett x Immortal Verse, by Pivotal) who scored a narrow win over Jonquil with Camille Pissarro in 3rd place.
As a 2yo, Henri Matisse won the Gr1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf, Gp2 Railway Stakes & Gp2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh. This season, he won the Gp3 Red Rocks Stakes.

There has been a change to the placings in Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.
Following
a stewards' inquiry, Shes Perfect, who passed the post 1st, was
disqualified and placed 2nd - caused interference. Zarigana was awarded
the race.
So the winner is now Zarigana (3f Siyouni x Zarkamiya, by Frankel).

The Gp2 Middleton Fillies' Stakes over 10½ furlongs at York has been won in devastating fashion by See The Fire (4m Sea The Stars x Arabian Queen, by Dubawi) who defeated Beautiful Love by a huge margin with Royal Dress 3rd.
See The Fire looked very promising as a 2 & 3yo winning the Gp3 Strensall Stakes in 2024 & running 3rd in the Gp1 Fillies' Mile in 2023. However, she appears to have matured into an outstanding mare. First up she peaked on her run in the Gp3 Gordon Richards Stakes but today she exploded!

The Gp2 Dante Stakes for 3yos over 10½ furlongs at York has been won by Pride Of Arras (3c New Bay x Parnell's Dream, by Oasis Dream) who defeated Damysus & Wimbledon Hawkeye. The favourite, The Lion in Winter was very disappointing although he did overrace in the early stages.
Pride Of Arras had only had one previous start which he won easily last August. He will be a big hope in Derby.

His dam won over 12 furlongs so I expect he would go to Epsom.
New Derby favourites after The Lion In Winter is tamed as 18-1 Pride Of Arras ends Aidan O'Brien's Classic trial monopoly
The Lion In Winter has
been usurped as favourite for the Betfred Derby by Delacroix and Ruling
Court after a tame comeback effort behind the impressive https://www.racingpost.com/profile/horse/6270353/pride-of-arras/form/" rel="nofollow - Pride Of Arras in the Dante Stakes.
Making
his return to the racecourse for the first time since winning the Acomb
Stakes in August, The Lion In Winter was warm and fractious beforehand.
Once the stalls opened, he evidently wanted to go much faster than
jockey Ryan Moore wanted and pulled hard for half a mile.
Moore
started to niggle the odds-on favourite at the top of the home straight
and greater distress signals followed. In the end, the horse who had
carried the Epsom Classic hopes for Ballydoyle for the entire winter
faded tamely to finish sixth, a result in stark contrast to the
dominance Aidan O’Brien has had over the Classic trials this spring.
Pride
Of Arras, on the other hand, left his rider Rossa Ryan dreaming of
Derby victory after impressively defeating his rivals on what was only
his second start.
Positioned
just behind the leaders, he quickened eye-catchingly when asked and had
a length in hand over Damysus at the line. He was cut to 4-1 (from 50)
for the Derby by Betfred, with Ruling Court and Delacroix the 3-1
joint-favourites for Epsom.
Ryan
said: "It went lovely. It’s his second run and we were all in the camp
of getting him to drop in the middle of them to learn and then figure it
out from there. But, my god, he took me into the race really good and
when I pulled him out he just dropped down and went.
"You’d
be getting a bit excited about him, that’s for sure. He’s bred to get a
mile and a half, and we can dream a bit more with this lad. He’s got a
great mentality and he’s got a bright future."

Her progeny include 5 G1 winners - Banks Hill, Cacique, Champs Elysees, Heat Haze & Intercontinental, the G2 winner & G1 placed Dansili & G3 winner Deluxe. Dansili & Champs Elysees were successful stallions, not forgetting Raise The Flag who stood in New Zealand & sired some fine stayers such as Sydney Cup winner Etah James.

Shes Perfect team lose appeal against controversial French 1,000 Guineas demotion
Zarigana remains the winner of the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches
https://www.racingpost.com/profile/horse/6188594/zarigana/form/" rel="nofollow - Zarigana remains the winner of the https://www.racingpost.com/results/211/longchamp/2025-05-11/895464/" rel="nofollow - Poule d'Essai des Pouliches after the appeal lodged by connections of https://www.racingpost.com/profile/horse/6193154/shes-perfect/" rel="nofollow - Shes Perfect was unsuccessful.
The
raceday stewards at Longchamp judged that Shes Perfect came off a
straight line at Longchamp, carrying Ryan Moore on Exactly across
Zarigana, interference they deemed to have cost the Aga Khan Studs'
filly more than the margin of her nose defeat.
https://www.racingpost.com/news/international/france/charlie-fellowes-and-kieran-shoemark-wait-on-french-1000-guineas-appeal-verdict-after-hearing-in-paris-aCKX14i8cSae/" rel="nofollow - A hearing lasting an hour took place on Tuesday, with Charlie Fellowes saying he and Shes Perfect's rider Kieran
Shoemark had put forward some "legitimate arguments" to the three-person
panel.
However,
France Galop published the outcome on Wednesday with no change to the
stewards initial awarding of the Classic to Zarigana.
Represented
by leading lawyer Florence Gaudilliere, Fellowes and Shoemark
maintained their claim that nothing in the trajectory of She's Perfect
did anything to prevent Zarigana going past, that Exactly had taken
Zarigana's ground and that their filly was never headed at any point in
the race.
In addition they
pointed to what they argued was a precedent established in the case of
the appeal over the 2019 Prix du Moulin – the only other Group 1 in
France to be subject to this procedure since the interference rules were
brought much closer to those in Britain in 2017 – in which the stewards
elected not to demote Circus Maximus in favour of Romanised, despite
what they claimed was "more serious interference."
They
also asked for the fact that Mickael Barzalona had not appealed against
his two-day ban for Zarigana's late deviation to her right to be taken
into account, reasoning that he was solely responsible for not going
past Shes Perfect, having dropped his whip.
Ryan
Moore, who was present in the original enquiry and gave evidence by
letter, said he believed he was about to go past Shes Perfect when she
began to come across, and was forced to change his whip hand to avoid
colliding with Shoemark's mount, therefore shifting across Zarigana.
Moore
said that he was carried off his line for a total of 150 metres and was
forced to race on less favourable ground than if he had kept straight,
adding that the original interference had cost him all chance of winning
by the time Zarigana leaned in.
Zarigana's
owner, the Aga Khan Studs, was represented by another high-powered
legal mind in Mathieu Offenstadt, and based their argument around the
loss of balance and momentum caused by the domino effect of Shes Perfect
coming across, and the fact that the drift had lasted for more than 100
metres.
Barzalona said
his filly had been ready to accelerate before becoming unbalanced, while
additional points raised were the opinion that Zarigana was in front
the stride after the line, and that Fellowes had admitted that there was
"minor interference" in an interview with "a British journalist",
presumed to be one he gave to Sky Sports Racing.

Oisin Murphy Charged with Drink Driving Following Serious Road Traffic Collision
Champion jockey Oisin Murphy has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to cooperate with a roadside test, following his involvement in a serious road traffic collision which took place in Hermitage, West Berkshire back in April this year.
A statement released by Thames Valley Police on Thursday said, “Last Thursday (19/6) Oisin Murphy, aged 29 of Beales Farm Road, Lambourn, Hungerford, was charged by postal requisition with one count of driving a motor vehicle while over the prescribed limit of alcohol and one count of failing to cooperate with a preliminary test at the roadside.
“The charge is in connection with a single vehicle road traffic collision around 12.05am on Sunday 27 April this year when a grey Mercedes A Class left the road and crashed into a tree.
“Murphy is due to appear at Reading Magistrates' Court on 3 July.
“It is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media as this is a live investigation.”
Murphy has continued to ride since the incident occurred nearly nine weeks ago, including at Royal Ascot where he entered the winner's enclosure on five occasions. He currently leads the British Flat jockeys' championship in his quest for a fifth title with 49 winners.
Later on Thursday, the British Horseracing Authority issued the following statement, “The BHA is aware of an update issued by Thames Valley Police this afternoon regarding Mr Oisin Murphy.
“We are now seeking to gather as much information as possible in order to consider what, if any, implications there are as a result of this development.”

There was an interesting race in the 7 furlong 2yo Maiden at Newmarket. It was won by the Godolpin colt Distant Storm (2c Night Of Thunder x Date With Destiny, by George Washington) who outbobbed the Ballydoyle representative Constitution River (2c Wootton Bassett x Chuppy, by Le Havre) with a gap back to third.
Apparently, the past 7 winners of this race have gone on to be stakes performers including last year's victor, Field Of Gold. Both of these colts should be contesting black type races later this season.
Constitution River impressed many with his appearance. He is out of a sister to the Gp1 winner, Wonderful tonight.
Distant Storm was purchased for 1.9 million euros at a breeze-up sale in May. His dam was a stakes placed winner who was the only progeny of George Washington. After it was apparent that he had fertility issues, George returned to the racetrack running two 3rds in 4 starts but sadly broke down at his final appearance in a Breeders Cup Classic. Date With Destiny is also the dam of Beautiful Morning who won the Gp3 Royal Whip Stakes & LR John Musker Fillies Stakes.

Remember Royal Champion?
He had 3 starts in Melbourne last spring for Anthony & Sam Freedman, the only placing being a 2nd in the Gp2 Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley.
Well he is back England & at his fifth start this campaign just won the Gp2 York Stakes easily defeating Almaqam, the horse who got the better of Ombudsman in the Gp3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes

The Obrien team stuffed that up didn't they.
Not sure what they were hoping would happen making it a relatively slowly run race. Both Ballydoyle inmates are out and out stayers and needed a proper test.
Hopefully Calandagan is aimed at the Japan Cup. Wonderful horse.

Ten years ago they'd have had a designated donkey pacemaker, a la Bullet Train for Henry Cecil in the Frankel days.
Though such appears to be somewhat frowned upon in Group 1 races these days.
Posted By: djebel
Date Posted: 27 Jul 2025 at 9:03pm
Continuous was the designated pacemaker but for some reason he was not allowed to set off and set a hectic tempo.
Pacemakers are often used to set a slow tempo but this was not an occasion such a tactic would be used. Ultimately it bit them on the ass and the faster horses ran 1st and 2nd.

A big boilover in the Sussex Stakes with a 150/1 winner.
The Gp1 Sussex Stakes over a mile has been won by Qirat (4g Showcasing x Emulous, by Dansili) defeating Rosallion & Henri Matisse. Field Of Gold was never comfortable on the Goodwood track finishing 4th.
Qirat was one of the leaders midrace, along with Serengeti, with a long gap back to the more fancied horses who weren't able to make up the ground.
Qirat is a half-brother to Bluestocking who won the 2024 Arc.

3 major races in a row where the pacemakers or those following have not done their jobs.
The jockeys in this case let the pacemakers get away and did not bother taking any notice of them.

Watching the post-race coverage I did find it interesting how shell-shocked the presenters were that the pacemaker had the temerity to win the race and that it was essentially the "wrong" Juddmonte horse that won it. There was very little discussion of the winning horse, and the winning jockey was asked if he felt like a villain instead of being applauded for pulling off a G1 win on a $150 shot.

The Gp1 Nassau Stakes for fillies & mares over 10 furlongs has been won by Whirl (3f Wootton Bassett x Salsa, by Galileo) who defeated Cercene & See The Fire.
It was a bit of a farcical race as a big thunderstorm hit the track resulting in a heavy surface & with thunder & lightning around, it was decided to adopt a flag start with See The Fire & Bedtime Story missing the break by about six lengths.

Mission Central (2g No Nay Never x Thar She Blows, by Zoffany) is a Ballydoyle 2yo who was well beaten as favourite on debut & then gelded. Today he has won a 28 runner 2yo Maiden at Naas by panels. Obviously won't be eligible for classics but should have a good future.
His dam is an unraced full-sister to Prosperous Voyage who won the Gp1 Falmouth Stakes in 2022.

The Gp2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano over 10 furlongs at Deauville is
often won by past or future Group One winners. In recent years
Economics, Ace Impact, Dubai Honour, Mishriff, Almanzor, New Bay &
Gailo Chop have all been successful in this event.
This
year it has been won by Alohi Alii (3c Duramente x Espoir, by Orfevre),
a Japanese visitor who defeated his rivals by 3½ lengths. His form in
Japan would suggest that he is not among the very best of their 3yos but
today's race was on Soft going which is often the undoing of Japanese
raiders attempting to be the first from that country to win an Arc.

Both of those are Heritage Handicaps, so today was his first success in Group company.

from the Guardian
All scheduled racing in Britain on 10 September will be cancelled and the sport will, in effect, go on strike, as racing escalates its protests against a Treasury proposal to align the rate of duty charged on sports betting with the rate for much more addictive games of pure chance such as roulette and online slot machines.

The Gp1 Prix Jacques le Marois over a mile at Deauville has been won by Diego Velazquez (4h Frankel x Sweepstake, by Acclamation) who defeated Notable Speech in a photo with Dancing Gemini in 3rd place. Notable Speech, who came from the tail of the field, had trouble obtaining a clear run but was flying at the finish & could be considered the unlucky runner.
Diego Velazquez has now won 6 races from 11 starts including the Gp2 Minstrel Stakes last month as well as the Gp2 Solonaway Stakes & Gp3 Meld Stakes in 2024 & the Gp2 KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes in 2023. He is a half brother to Gp1 winner Broome & Gp2 winner Point Lonsdale.

At one stage well into the the home straight, Birr Castle had a huge lead & some were thinking that another upset was on the cards. However, Ombudsman responded brilliantly & won easily on the line.
