Subject: Advice for Breeding Deep Field Mare

Hi There,A group of my mates were involved in the ownership of a Deep Field filly, Deep Opinions.
She retired due to injury (fetlock bone) before she turned 4 but won 4 from 12 starts (nothing of note), total prize money was around $100k.
We purchased her back on Inglis Digital for the grand sum of $700 and have put her in a nice paddock and we are hoping to maybe look at breeding to race (not sell at sales). She's now 5 years old
She's not overly tall, was a back marker with a handy turn of foot on her day, preferred wet tracks.
As we are complete amateurs when it comes to breeding I was hoping to get any advice regarding stallions/farms to pick etc.
We would have a budget of max $50k for stud fees.
The dam of Deep Opinions, Opinionated, is by Markane (Red Ransom) and Legal Tune (Piccolo (GB))
Thanks in advance!

Hi Mark
Yes, she's a breed to race type of mare.
Pierata and Russian Revolution come up well from a line breeding perspective but are too expensive. Others well worth consideration might include (not in any order) All Too Hard, Supido, Ghaiyyath, Smart Missile and Encryption.
Rather than me detailing the reasoning for all five you might have a look at them and if one or two have some up-front attraction I'd be happy to provide my reasoning.
Best of luck.

Thanks Second Chance,
I did a bit of research regarding the line breeding after your response, am I correct in assuming that Pierata and Russian Revolution would be good in terms of multiple links back to Mr Prospector (Pierata) and Northern Dancer/Nearctic (Russian Revolution)?
With our location on the Central Coast of NSW I think we would prefer to focus on Hunter Valley or NSW more generally so All too Hard and Smart Missile would be viable options.
All too Hard was the stallion I was thinking initially as it seems to be tried and tested at a decent price and gets decent nick rating A+ from memory, as well as a 20/20 match on G1 Goldmine, although I'm unsure if i really understand any of that enough to make sense of the data. Smart Missile looks great value at $13k as it seems to produce some handy runners and seems to be some common broodmares in the pedigree. Would be grateful if you could let me know your thoughts on these two.
Thanks again, really appreciate it

Well if the above doesn't enthuse, let's go down another track: ie Deep Field's clear affinity with Danehill. All of the stallions below are sons of the great stallion. That of course opens up a virtual Pandora's Box as so many stallions contain his blood, including four of the stallions suggested above.
Encryption in particular needs be re-mentioned here as his sire Lonhro and Deep field both hail from from the celebrated Eight Carat family. This is a recommended duplication, one already proven given Commands (see below) also contains the Eight Carat blood. Whoops, missed Mark's reply.
Russian Revolution is from the Danehill sire line, that's a tick. And he over your mare gives you siblings Grand Luxe (ancestress of Flying Spur by Danehill) and L'Extrvagante (ancestress of Russian Revolution) and celebrated siblings Thong and Moccasin. And as you infer, Northern Dancer and Mr Prospector go together like bacon and eggs.
Pierata is just marvelous because the match contains Danehill, the Eight Carat cross referred to in my earlier post, siblings Flying Spur and Shoal Creek (dam of Encosta De Lago) and is awash with the ND - Mr P cross.

Yes, Smart Missile over your mare provides some lovely duplications. Notably the mare Explosive, grand dam of Smart Missile and grand-dam of Northern Meteor, a cross of Red Ransom which introduces his breed shaping grand-sire Hail To Reason, plenty of the ND and Mr P, and a Sir Tristram cross back in the pedigree. Have a good friend who's very thick with the manager at Twin Hills Stud so we might be able to get you a decent discount on his advertised fee for 2025 when it's announced.
All Too Hard appears a great match too. A cross of Kew Gardens, grand-dam of All Too Hard's sire Casino Prince and also dam of Markane, plus her sibling Woodwind, dam of the sire Piccolo. Add in the Rolls cross referred to earlier, she being the dam of Flying Spur and grand dam of Encosta De Lago. And once again plenty of ND and Mr P.

you are quite correct there SC as Deep Field and Deep Opinions have no Danehill in the pedigree, (incidently she is from the same female line as Danehill, branches at Charm) or Danzig, and amongst others such as Sadler's Wells etc Frankel actually looks pretty good, lol, IMO her bottom line makes it a little harder, and if there was a "weak" part of her pedigree I would say Piccolo, no suggestions,

Just as an aside with this mare. The family has decreased in recent years but back in the day it produced Magnificent the winner of the AJC & VRC Derby, AJC Champagne S and AJC Sires' Produce. Now the funny thing was he was double 2e through his female line 2e Teppo and his sire's Ajax 2e Medmenham line. With the cross way back in the pedigree with Charm (St Simon). Now Ajax was a son of Heroic. Now you find Ajax in Luskin Star who amazingly is also from the Teppo (2e) female line so he also carries that double like Magnificent. So whoever suggested Supido wouldn't be such a bad idea

You have plenty of sons of Sebring, Dundeel ect with that blood. And if you wonder about the mix with Deep Field his son Cosmic Force also has a line of 2e Luskin Star. The only stallion from the line at the moment is Xtravagant who also looks interesting on paper. Being a son of Pentire (1-l) to Ajax sire of Magnificent being by Heroic (1n) those two lines decending from close relatives. Also these is a line of Todman to cross to the Noholme blood of Semipalatinsk in your mare.

Wonder if Mark decided to go with Smart Missile, given Briasa's win in the Gp1 TJ Smith today.
