Okay I have done my horses to watch for each category and the early selections for the spring group 1's but my internet connection keeps cutting out and so I will have to post that at a later stage, but I thought I would steal furious's thunder Big smile and set the thread up now before the first stakes races of the season.

Hopefully I can post the ones to watch during the next week.

Oh I have favourites but can only hope they step up to the mark for the season. My pickes of recent years from the sales have not been at the top of the tree.  I'm blaming not getting to sales with covid.  You can only see so much online.

Of course Espiona, Illation, Artorius, Paulele, Bruckner, Get in the Spirit, Xtravagant Star, He's Xceptional, Cythera, Quang Tri, Giannis, Lofty Strike, Ranges and  others which I've followed from the sales are high on the list of ones I look for.

Almost anything from the Juliet line!  That's a given and include Quang Tri who showed some late season form.

But I really want the Golden Slipper winner to come out and at least be pushed out over 1600m.  Same with the She's Extreme.  I don't want to see them endlessly going around over 1200m.  I even hope to see the same with Best of Bordeaux who like Anamoe was a great run in the slipper.

Anyway early days yet and haven't decided who to follow.  I hope Anamoe comes out and delivers but his mind wasn't always on the job last season and that will be a worry if he continues that way.

But hey the good horses are starting to trial so who cares.  Some good racing is just a few weeks away.

Watched Anamoe trial the other day , was a muck lather going on to the track , trialled well , but to people who like a punt , he's a definite yard watch imho .

Okay lets see who we are looking at seeing over the next season.

Obviously no 2yo's and I have decided to split the categories into Group 1 contenders and non group 1 contenders. I have also placed the 3yo's into one group so the males and females are in the one group.

I am also still very wary of trusting the Sydney autumn form and last Saturday's Missile Stakes has done nothing to quell those feelings as Forbidden Love, Nimalee and Hilal were not great in admittedly an unsuitable race Confused

Lets get into it.

3yo's.

Group 1's - Daumier, Best Of Bordeaux, Sejardan, Jacquinot, Rise Of the Masses, Semillion, Brosnan, Sebonack, Political Debate, Letsrollthedice, Williamsburg, Sharp'N'Smart, Basquiat, Owen County, Man In The Mirror, Aft Cabin, Shalatin (needs it dry), Showcourt, Yaki Ishi, Magic, Amelia's Jewel, Fireburn, She's Extreme, Sheeza Belter, See You In Heaven, Seven Veils, Coolangatta, Russian Conquest (needs it dry), Dashing Legend, Paris D'or, I'm Lovinya, Waltz On By, Lambada.

Non Group 1's - Ebhaar, Cythera, Miss Revolutionary, Nanagui, Swiss Exile, Exo Lady, Miss Roseiano, Man In The Mirror, Lethal Thoughts, Tijuana, Crossroads, Eye Of The Eagle, Twin Stars, Brereton, Merchant Prince, Rampant Lion, Seven Sisters, English Riviera, Lady Laguna, Miss Faberge, He's Heaven, Ojai, Zambezi River, Greece, Great Barrier Reef.

4yo's.

Group 1's - Illation, Anamoe, Converge, Alegron, Benaud, Barb Raider, Pinarello, Dark Destroyer, Character, Gypsy Goddess, Hinged, Fangirl, Espiona, Profondo, Bon's A Pearla, Lightsaber, Startantes, Paulele, Overpass, Mazu (very interested to see how he goes on a drier surface), Artorius, Vilana, La Crique, Yaphet, Prince Of Boom, Sword Of State, In The Congo, Argentia, Zouzarella, Jamaea.

Non Group 1's - Party For One, A Very Fine Red, Mr Mozart, Flying Crazy, Battleton, Seradess, Ingratiating, General Beau, Glint Of Hope, Detonator Jack, Straight Aaron, Le Villi, Heresy, Hellfast, Zapateo, Arcaded, Generation, Prix De Turn, Pinstriped, So You See, Yearning (just hope she stays in Melbourne), Ranch Hand, Maurice's Medad, Captivant, Hilal, Pascero, Zethus, Bacchanalia, King Of Sparta, Spirit Of Gaylard, Brigantine, Seradess, Extreme Warrior, Kiss Sum, Alpine Edge, Military Expert.

Older Horses.

Group 1's - Nature Strip, Eduardo, Masked Crusader, Marabi, September Run, Halvorsen, Rothfire, Duais, Montefilia, Zaaki, Numerian, Cascadian, Inspirational Girl, Mr Brightside, I'm Thunderstruck, Ayrton, Apache Chase, Sheraz, Surefire, Knights Order, Stockman, Maximal, Private Eye, Forbidden Love, Nimalee, Turaath, Tofane, Sierra Sue, Count De Rupee, Mo'unga, Huetor, Hungry Heart, Levante, Lost And Running, Gold Trip, Mugatoo.

Non Group 1's - Taksu, Annavisto, Yonce, Flying Mascot, La Gai Soleil, Snapdancer, Najmaty, Stageman, Juan Diva, Letzbeglam, Laws Of Indices, Irish Sequel, Ellsberg, Mirra Vision, Kissonallforcheeks, Foxy Frida, Aramayo, Milford, Poland, Mount Popa, Belluci Babe, Bankers Choice, Just Folk, Promise Of Success, Ballistic Lover, Emanate, Marboosha, Steinem, Nonconformist, Lunar Flare, Kemalpasa, Scallopini, The Astrologist.

I think we have a good group of horses from those categories to have a season of success.

Now for the spring group 1's. I will give a 4yo and an older horse selection.

Winx Stakes - Anamoe & Duais
Memsie Stakes - Illation & Apache Chase
Makybe Diva Stakes - Inspirational Girl & Mo'unga (I am not sure any 4yo will be ready for this race although horses like Lightsaber and Pinstriped could win)
George Main Stakes - Converge & Hungry Heart
Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes - Lightsaber & Sierra Sue
Moir Stakes - Paris D'or, Paulele & Eduardo
Underwood Stakes - La Crique/Dark Destroyer (one of the NZ'ers) & Numerian
Golden Rose - Daumier, Jacquinot & Best Of Bordeaux
Metropolitan - Alegron & Sheraz
Flight Stakes - She's Extreme & Seven Veils
Epsom - Converge & Hungry Heart
Turnbull Stakes - One of the NZ'ers & Zaaki
Spring Champion - Showcourt & Sharp'N Smart
Toorak Hcp - Barb Raider & Laws Of Indices
Might & Power Stakes - Anamoe & Mo'unga
Caulfield Guineas - Aft Cabin & Magic
1000 Guineas - I'm Lovinya & Waltz On By

Melbourne Cup - No Australian horse will finish top four. Duais will be the first Australian runner home alongside Montefilia.
VRC Oaks - Seven Sisters & winner of the Wakeful
Mackinnon Stakes - Mo'Unga & Heutor

Cantala is no longer on Derby Day mate, it has been moved to Stakes day and renamed the Champions Mile with an increased purse and changed to WFA conditions.

The MacKinnon is now also called the Champions Stakes and the sprint the Champions Sprint.

Voyager, your George Main/Epsom tip Hungry Heart is already officially retired to the breeding barn - so you’ll have to find a sub for her.

For all those worried about inbreeding to Danehill Zoukerino is another one bred 3m x 3f.  Like Giga Kick (inbred to the 8f family through Redoute's, Nijinsky (twice), Try My Best, THe Minstrel and dam Rekindled Applause) Zoukerino has four lines of his female line 7-a through Danehill (twice), Bletchingly and his dam Walk with Attitude.

While a third three year old winner yesterday - Bound for Home carries the cross of siblings Canny Lad and Canny Lass and Danehill 4m x 4m.  I picked her from the sales as she also decends from Juliet and I do keep my eyes open for them.  THis is the family of Silent Witness who was a son of Jade Cherie's full sister Jade Tiara.  Also I've found in the past the line likes Encosta de Lago (She will Reign) and Fastnet Rock (Catchy) blood and I didn't mind the full sibling cross and Mr Prospector double doesn't hurt either.  I'm hoping this filly can go on to the Oaks but no doubt she will be kept to sprints.  Pity as plenty of strength in her pedigree.

This line of Juliet gave us Hi Jinx (Melbourne Cup), Shifnal's Pride (Royal S, George Adams), Fair Filou (ARC Queen Elizabeth H, Avondale Cup), Rainfall (Avondale Cup, Royal S) etc.

Talking about good pedigrees Mr Brightside shows how good families might bide their time for a few generations but they come back.  The funny thing is he's by the other brother.  Helmet and Epaulette were great gallopers and Bullbars picked up a stakes race so he had some ability but he has a very good son in Mr Brightside.

Then once again we bemoan the early demise of Tavistock this time because of him showing ability as a sire of dams.  But what happened with Keepable (Keeper from Delia's Choice).  Only three named and one to race with no wins.  Sent to Tavistock twice and Zabeel who sired her one runner she was just an example that even good blood sometimes just doesn't come through.

Her dam Delia's CHoice (Sir Tristram) had one G1 winner in Foxwood (Captain Cook Stakes) and of her four named daughters it was only Foxwood who became a dam to a stakes winner.

But the next dam was a great broodmare producing four stakes winners to Sir Tristram including the G1 winners Gurner's Lane (Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup), Sovereign Red (Australian Derby, Rothman's 100,000, VRC Derby, Underwood S, Western Mail Classic, Caulfield GUineas and runner up to Kingston Town in a Cox Plate) and Trichelle (Marlboro Cup).

It is to be seen if Mr Brightside can reach those heights but he's on his way.

Talking about female lines.  The decendants of White and Blue (GER) 1876 include the great stallion Savabeel.  But back in the 1960's it produced a two year old mud lark called Pago Pago who was sold to America where he stood at stud before coming home to Australia in 1980.  His name to well and truly out there in the world thoroughbred pedigree thanks to Dancing Brave his Arc de Triomphe winner who is a son of Pago Pago's granddaughter Navajo Princess.  Dancing Brave's full sister Jolypha (Prix de Diane G1) is the granddam of NZ based Redwood (Northern Dancer Turf S G1).

So it is interesting to see Calypso Reign by far the best winner by Barbados (great grandson of equally great Emancipation) come out and represent the Pago Pago female branch of White and Blue's Australian family.

Mr Brightside was good yesterday I'll give you that but given the Lawrence is now clearly the third wheel for resuming horses behind the Memsie and Warwick Stakes, as shown by the quality of the field behind him, I'd like to see him do it against a better field before calling him a top liner.

In the list above you will not see Jacquinot's name. That is because I am unsure what he is being aimed at. He is a great chance in anything he races in either over the sprint distances or the mile.

I was very tempted to put a 3yo in for the Australian Cup. I think this is a year where a 3yo could go well against the expected field. Elliptical and Mr Maestro failed in the Mackinnon but that was after a tough prep and they will be five months older.

There are a few selections who need things to happen. Like Sharp N Smart backing up from the Rosehill Guineas to the Tancred. I know Graeme Rogerson's mindset and if he thinks this horse is as good as he thinks he usually tests the 3yo's against the older horses. The fly in the ointment here is that he will need to back up 3 weeks in a row if was to go for the Australian Derby as well.

The 1400m+ for the 2yo's seem to see late comers do well recently, but I have not seen a 2yo so far who I think would be a genuine 1400m+ 2yo so I have reserved judgement on those races.

Some of those selections also depend on where the horses will be racing. A horse like Alligator Blood would be ideally suited in the CF Orr and Futurity if he is being aimed at the All Star Mile. NZ horses like La Crique and Dark Destroyer could stay at home but they are good enough to win in Sydney or Brisbane. Will In Secret be racing in Melbourne or will she be kept to Sydney?

And just like that we are welcoming the Autumn Carnival with the opening G1 race in Melbourne today. Hopefully the Spring season champs like Anamoe, Nature Strip, I'm Thunderstruck, Jacqinot, Alligator Blood, Coolangatta, In Secret, Mo'Unga, Zaaki, Private Eye, Golden Mile, Giga Kick etc can come out to play.

We've lost a few like She's Extreme and Snapdancer to injury so hopefully the rest come out and give us a good Autumn.  But who will step into their shoes and become a G1 horse?

Then there is the mystery of the two year olds.  I still haven't decided who will and wont step up and take the Golden Slipper or Blue Diamond.  Will the early two year olds like Platinum Jubilee, PErfect Proposal, Empire of Japan, Tach Ten, Zulfiqar, King's Gambit, Arkansaw Kid, Krakarib, Charm Stone etc return and stay ahead or will a late comer spoil their party.

Plenty of two year olds have shown some ability from December on with Malaboom, Godfather, Saltaire, Sovereign Fund, Skirt the Law, De Sonic Boom, The Instructor, Red Resistance, Learning to Fly, Madeira Sunrise etc leading the pack.  But it is really this weekend that we start to find out the truth for the Autumn two year olds.

And then there is the headache which always comes when trying to sort out which three year olds will go over 2400m for the Derby and oaks.  It doesn't help when the VRC Oaks winner is already out in the paddock with an injury.  Will Golden Mile or Aft Cabin go out over a trip this Autumn or be kept to the mile and below?  Or Sharp 'n' Smart and Elliptical continue their close encounters.  Which has gone forward?  Or there is Berkley Square who promised so much in the spring to just fall short.

Not to forget the VRC derby winner Manzoice or the maiden Aberfeldie Boy who could also have taken than next step.  Or Zennzella and Pavitra and Queen Air looking to take She's Extreme mantel.

The Autumn is ready and waiting to entertain and bemuse us all.

Ok we are nearly to the Golden Slipper with the final field being given.  Yeah I haven't lost my run with Facile making the field for my picks and Exploding decending from a filly I picked years ago.  A family I don't get to see much of through the sales as Woodlands and the Darley took alot of them on.

Exploding has the honour of decending from a Golden Slipper winner herself in Fairy Walk.  She was a half sister to a great sire Planet Kingdom who died too soon after injuring himself at stud.  Planet Kingdom was better know for his middle distance performers with Ming Dynasty being one of my all time favourite greys.  As the female line decending from the dam of Phar Lap (ie same as Sunline) you can't get much better it you tried.

Now Facile has an interesting pedigree being by Trapeze Artist (himself from the Fairy Walk female line) out of a Pierro (Golden Slipper) mare.  To top that off she decends from the dam of Subzero (Melbourne Cup) but Subby's dam was a 3/4 sister in blood to the dam of Marscay (Golden Slipper).  To add to the picture you also find Flying Spur as the sire of the third dam of Facile.

Not that Exploding is the only one from a blue blooded line.  Cylinder decends from Lonhro's dam Shadea who herself won a lead up to the Slipper (Sweet Embrace S)  As the dam of winners of 31 stakes races Shadea doesn't need much more to back her up but then her grandam My Tricia was also a great mare is Grosvenor (VRC Derby, Caulfield Guineas, VRC Sires', Pago Pago etc to his name)

Shinzo's dam Samaready won the Blue Diamond and A J Moir Stakes so all class there also but only a few generations back you find the dam of County Tyrone (Sydney Cup, Qld Derby, Metropolitan H etc).

I'm pretty sure the above all have one thing in common.  A mix of sprinters and out and out stayers coming from the same female lines.  You don't need a speedy squid to win the slipper.

Just looking through the rest of the field you come up with the greats like Whisked, Tie the Knot, Arkady, Nellie Morse (a USA mare inbred to our Trenton and also carrying Abercorn a son of Chester in her pedigree), Maybe Mahal, Shindig, Linton, Cozzene, Attley, Snippets, September Run and She's Country (NZ Oaks) etc.  Some speedsters and some more middle distance runners and even stayers.

I haven't decided yet who to back but I'll be there cheering them on.

Do they electronically draw the barriers for the Slipper?  Or are the entries placed in a revolving barrel like they once did with Tattslotto etc?
Either way they might need to change the procedure or give the barrel another turn or two, otherwise how can you explain how the last seven acceptors drew 9,10,11,12,14,15 and 16?  Shocked Ouch

Date Posted: 03 Apr 2023 at 4:44pm

We have seen quite a few G1’s since we moved into 2023.  We’ve seen Anamoe proving hard to get past although they have got close.  From one of the oldest Australasian families in the stud book he decends from Manto that gave Trenton to the world.  And without Trenton we wouldn’t have Star Kingdom,  Sir Tristram or even Danehill so I guess he paid us back.  Now it looks like a wet track will be waiting for him in the Queen Elizabeth but as Anamoe’s 2nd dam is a daughter of Whiskey Road I can’t see that as a bad thing.

With I am Invincible once again leading the sires list it’s not rocket science to see tow of his impressive daughters also on the list of G1 winners  in the last few months.  The three year filly In Secret and his four year old daughter Imperatriz.

Now I admit to not minding seeing Rory’s Jester in a mare sent to I am Invincible so I followed In Secret from the sales.  Now the funny thing about In Secret’s female line is she goes back to the producer of Salmon-Trout a son of The Tetrarch who won both the Dewhurst Stakes and the English St Leger while his second dam won the 1000 Guineas.  Now I have found that families who cross in those big G1 winners often repeat the performance over the years.  Now in Australia Biscay decends from the dam of The Tetrarch.  So as Biscay figures in both Choisir and I am Invincible seemed to good to be true.

Imperatriz is now the best G1 winner by I am Invincible and her dam’s sire Shamardal and I am Invincible both decend from illuminata dam of Chelandry (1000 Guineas), Ladas (Epsom Derby, 2000 Guineas, Middle Park S) and Gas (3rd 1000 Guineas and dam of Cicero who won the Epsom Derby).  This is the family of the great Australian sire Heroic so to see two lines meeting up and producing such a great racing filly makes me quite unhappy I missed picking her to follow!

Likewise we saw Savabeel sire two G1 winners last weekend.  I Wish I Win who was born with a shocking leg but has overcome every obstacle to become a pretty good sprinter/miler.  Now Savabeel is by the outstanding Zabeel but was foaled in Australia and from an Oaks winner Savannah Success who herself was a daughter of Alma Mater (Semipalatinsk) who won the Adrian Knox S.  Alma mater was one of the race Noholme/Todman crosses so I’ve always kept an eye on her line as I admit to being a big fan or those two brothers.  And it’s interesting to see many of the good gallopers by Savabeel carrying an extra line of Todman through Centaine (including I Wish I Win)

The other Savabeel was Major Beel.  Now I admit to not backing Major Beel last Saturday.  I’d forgotten I marked him to follow from the sales.  I don’t mark many NZ’s.  But I have a liking for the 13b line of O’Reilly and I’ve had my eye on Gold Rocks progeny for a few years.  She is the grandam of Major Beel.  But I missed the dam and followed this boy and then didn’t think about it till I saw his pedigree and thought that’s a family I like pity I missed him.  Went to look and I hadn’t!  Too late now.  Funny thing is up comes Luskin Star in another Derby pedigree also.  And Centaine is there also for the second line of Todman.  With being out of a Pins mare (a grandson of Kaoru Star this is a pedigree full of Star Kingdom yet without a line of his most prolific son Biscay.

Now another stallion who has had two G1’s this last few months in Australia is the New Zealand based Proisir.  Now back in the early 2000’s I picked a Encosta filly out of the sales for $20K who went on to win six races.  Even those prices weren’t extravagant back then I thought she was a pretty cheap buy and after Encosta came Centaine, Imperial March and Agricola and then the great mare Sunbride.  Sunbride was the dam of three greats General Command by Agricola (Sydney Cup, Queen Elizabeth S, The Metropolitan etc), Ilumquh by Sabaean (Caulfield Cup) and Straight Draw by Faux Tirage (Melboune Cup, The Metropolitan and Sydney Cup).  It will be interesting if and progeny of Proisir’s or his full brother Divine Choice can match the performances of the above three.

For the past few years we have had Redoute’s Choice and Encosta de Lago battling out the Broodmare Sire of the Year title.  And both have two G1 winners on this recent list.  Redoute’s has Anamoe and Artorius.  Now many years ago I picked Flying Ruby (a daughter of Rubiton) to follow out to the sales ring.  She won six races including a G3 and then at stud produced Flying Artie.  Now I picked Flying Ruby because of her connection to Better loosen Up who was another favourite racehorse.  And when Flying Artie started racing he also had than flying finish but didn’t get to race on for the years we enjoyed Better Loosen Up race for.

So I checked out his first crop from the sales and ended up picking Artorius, Asfoora and Giannis to follow along with a few others who weren’t as good. But if you look at Artorius’s female line he decends from La Troienne.  You may notice I tend to check out the female lines before anything else when checking out who to follow!

Now Encosta’s two are Alligator Blood and Mariamia.  Now Alligator Blood is from another great line of mares descending from the dam of Typhoon Tracy.   And like Typhoon Tracy he gives his all.  Mariamia is a different story.  She comes from a good line of mares but not great.  Yet her dam (a none winner) has what I call a broodmares pedigree.  She is by Encosta from a Flying Spur mare giving a 3m x 3s cross to Rolls.  I see these close inbreeding types a lot in very good mares.  They don’t always races as well but at stud it is a different story.  When I saw her being sold for only $18K I couldn’t resist the x in the book.

Now we also see two G1 winners out of More than Ready mares the Golden Slipper winner Shinzo who was by Snitzel from the Blue Diamond winner Samaready.  I’m still kicking myself for not backing him in the slipper when I thought the ground was to good!  He was breed for one thing to be a G1 winning two year old.  The other More than Ready is the Written Tycoon flying filly Coolangatta.

While O’reilly who has had the NZ broodmare sire list at his beck and call for many years has had Espiona and Major Beel who both have X in my respective sales catalogues.  As I said above the double 13b (well any of the many 13 families usually have me taking a look) for Major Beel got me in.  Espiona has the Redoute’s line over the Last Tycoon line which I’ve always liked and Pins and Centaine didn’t put me off.  It didn’t hurt to see Glamour Puss and Vision and Power under her third dam.

And that’s without talking about Mr Brightside who decends from the great Taiona dam of Gurner’s Lane (I’ll never forgive him the Melbourne Cup win over Kingston Town), Sovereign Red (VRC Derby, Cualfield Guineas, Australian Derby, Rothman’s 100,000 etc and 2nd to Kingston in the W S Cox Plate) and two stakes winning fillies.  It is lovely to see such a great family producing again!  While the sire Bullbars is the poor brother with only a G3 to his name while Helmet, Epaulette, Pericles and Pearls all have multiple G1’s or G2 wins to their name.  Accessories is an extraordinary mare.

Just looking at the last G1 of the season and the pedigree of Palaisipan.  A daughter of So You Think, from a daughter of Fastnet Rock the Encosta de lago.  I've found plenty of winners from the Juliet line of So You Think from both Fastnet Rock (Catchy) and Encosta de Lago (Mnemosyne and then from a son -She will Reign).  Lets hope she goes to some of the Lonhro line as that gave us Impending when cross to the female line of So You THink.

OK its the end of another season.  So did anyone have a great memory.  Mine would be finally owning my own winner.  Even if it was short and sweet she tried so hard.

Then from the top flight I love Anamoe so loved to see him win the W S Cox Plate he is such a lovely looking boy.

In Secret was another favourite who won at G1 level and never seemed to run a bad race.

While Hi Emocean (a pick for the TBV yearling comps) became our first Melbourne Cup placegetter and gave me a good pay day on Melbourne Cup day.

Mr Brightside was another favourite who also never seemed to run a bad race.

While it looks like we could finally have a  young sprinter who will be around for a few years with Giga Kick showing the oler brigade a clean set of heels.

Although I totally missed backing him Shinzo was bred to be a Slipper winner!  And duly won.

Dubai Honour was a pain later in the season for Anamoe but he too is a lovely looking horse and being a gelding I'm sure we will see him again.

As usual Golden Slipper day gave me many thrills with Lindermann and Mariamia both being horses I've followed.

While it is certain that I am Invincible will be Sire of the Year and Snitzel has the Two year old title we still have a close contest for the Broodmare Sires list.  I think Redoute's will hold on but with less that $100,000 in the lead it isn't in the bag.

Anyway hope you all have a favourite memory.

I found the spring WFA racing to be quite good watching, with Anamoe, Zaaki, Aligator Blood, Mr Brightside, I'm Thunderstruck, Mo'unga.  There was some good racing there from the early season races like the Winx and Memsie all the way through to the newly minted Champions Day at Flemington, speaking of that, what a great addition to the calendar that was as well.

2023-24 season has Giga Kick to replace the retiring Anamoe as a headline horse.  So far this young boy has delivered everytime his trainer has put him to a different task so I hope he leads the charge this season.  We still have Nature Strip in the wings and even his old time mate Eduardo are going to be there.  As will I Wish I Win who is still relatively young compared with NS and E.

The we have horses like Private Eye, Think it Over and Think About It for the mile and middle distance races to take on the multitude of overseas horses we keep importing for these races.  Of course there are others like Montefilia, Smokin' Romans, Duais, Lindermann, Osipenko, Pericles, Sharp 'n' Smart, Major Beel a multitude of Prosir's, the exciting Amokura and even She's Extreme if she has overcome her injury.

The coming three year olds are for once led by some extremely well performed C Waller two year olds in Shinzo and Militarize.  But don't forget to look deeper into any horse that ran in the Golden Slipper there is always at least one from the race to comes forward into their three year old season.

The Godolphin two year olds had a quieter season so it will be interesting if they pick themselves up and produce more G1 performances as three year olds.  Cylinder being the most interesting decending from Shadea dam of Lonhro.  But you never overlook stables like Maher/Waterhouse/Snowdens or Hawkes etc as I'm sure they will have something come out and fire.

The stayers are another story with most being a tad thin on the ground so i'll wait and see who rides what!

The leading Sires for the season at I am Invincible (Sires) and Redoute's Choice (Broodmare).  I find it very interesing that both are out of Canny Lad mares.  To add to his prizewinning list Gimmethegreenlight (Leading Sire in South Africa) is also out of a Canny Lad mare.  Not a bad achievement for a stallion who never won one of the main sire standings himself.

Now both of the Australian leading sires are a combination of the Danzig sireline and Star Kingdom sireline.  While the two South African based sires leading their Sires and Broodmare lists are both Hail to Reason sireline one over the Star Kingdom line and Captain Al (SAF) being out of a Bold Ruler sire line mare.

Looking at New Zealand we find the Australian bred Proisir as Leading Sire with his sire Choisir being a combination of Danzig sireline and Tom Fool sire (out of a Biscay/Star Kingdam 2nd dam).  Proisir is out of an Encosta de Lago mare from a Centaine 2nd dam.

While the broodmare list is O'Reilly a son of Last Tycoon (a different branch of the Northern Dancer line) from a Pompeii Court mare which is the Princequillo sireline.

All told though there are plenty of Australian sires in most of the pedigrees - Canny Lad, Bletchingly, Biscay, Royal Artist, Choisir, Encosta de lago, Centaine, Century, Vain, (Marauding and Red Anchor both NZ bred based in AUS) and Kaoru Star.

So where will we go from here?  We are long overdue a breed changer with the past few seasons moving away from the Danehill blood although Proisir looks a refresher for that sireline.  More and more of the stallions showing up in the top ten are from different lines the Green Dancer, Sadler's Wells, Sir Tristram, Fairy King, Last Tycoon and Street Cry outnumbered the single Danehill line sire Snitzel this last season.

The broodmare sires list is still full of Danehill with Redoute's Choice, Exceed and Excel, Fastnet Rock, Flying Spur all in the top five and Snitzel coming in at 10th.

While Snitzel is the last representative of the Danehill sire line in the leading top 10 we still have six stallions I am Invincible, Savabeel, Snitzel, Zoustar and Dundeel showing up with Star Kingdom line sires in their top five generations so the old boys blood is still out there and kicking goals.

Bois D'Argent, Timour, Sir Lucan.

With the 2000m+ older horses looking like they lack depth then the 4yo's look like they have the opportunity to sit in at the top of the tree.

With Mr Brightside and Without A Fight looking the two leaders gallopers like Prowess, Legato and Sharp N Smart have the opportunity to challenge for WFA supremacy.

With the rejigged carnival there is now at least 1 group 1 race from Sept 16th to 9th December when the Winterbottom and the Northerly are run at Ascot.

The VRC Derby and Oaks have become races which are won by 3yo's who have either really good group one 2yo form or they are unknowns. I saw no 2yo last season who I thought could run 2400m so I will say an unknown will win both those races this season.

With the lack of depth in our 2000m+ WFA horses, I can see all three majors being won by internationals this season.

Although we do not seem to have a major top line WFA horse at longer than 1600m it looks a very interesting season coming up, especially with the new carnival dates for the spring/summer.

Not looking too inspiring, I have to say. But I guess I'm mainly interested in 2000+ horses.

I agree stayer. I was thinking that the media guys were bonkers saying that Without A Fight was a Cox Plate horse after beating Luncies in Brisbane, but with Mr Brightside at his best up to a mile, Zaaki being a little too inconsistent than in the past (although I do think his spring form is better than his autumn form), Huetor and Numerian coming through the late season WFA form and not many other older horses topline at 2000m (shown by the fact that last season Smokin Romans won the Turnbull and Hezashocker ran 3rd in the Mackinnon) the best I could find was Mo'unga and we all know his limitations.

The other thing to consider this spring is the 4yo's. If you are an owner what do you aim at. Do you aim at the Golden Eagle in Sydney and forfeit the Cox Plate. With the addition of races like the Invitation and King Charles you also have other targets as well as the Golden Eagle. Horses like Amelias Jewel, Prowess, Legato, Zougotcha, Hawaii Five Oh, Osipenko, Communist, Pericles, Sunshine In Paris, Ruthless Dame, Opal Ridge, Matcha Latte, Golden Mile and a few others may only have one run in Melbourne.

A wrap of the Winx Stakes weekend.

Randwick.

A nice win from Buenos Noches who laid his claims for a Everest clot with a good win in the Show County. Argentia showed she is in for a nice prep if placed right and Sky Lab is on track for a shot at a race at 1600m or 1800m in the future. The Epsom and the Listed 1800m event on Melbourne Cup day into the Eclipse Stakes look nice races for Sky Lab.

I know they will meet stronger quality but I think the Premiers Cup will be a nice form reference. Military Mission, Bois D'Argent and Cleveland all ran well and Cleveland should improve to be a genuine Metrop contender. Fancy Man finished off well and he can be a nice type for the City Tatts Cup and ATC St.Leger type.

Parisal and Queen Of the Ball showed that they will be very competitive in any mares sprint and Parisal could be a nice Moir Stakes hope if she goes that way. Cinderella Days loomed up to be in the finish but just gave out condition wise and will be better next start at the 1200m. Zougotcha just not in a race to suit but she needs to improve off that run to be competitive in mares races in the future.

In the Winx Stakes you could go through every runner back to Major Beel and say they were good runs. Fangirl will be competitive in any race she runs in. Princess Grace looks an ideal type for the Invitation and Empire Rose. Zaaki ran well but was just missing his second trial to get his fitness up. He can run well in anything with the Champion Stakes his main aim again during cup week. Hinged was her usual honest run just needs the track a bit softer. Osipenko looks on track for the Epsom and he can win leading into that race. The comeback boy Think It Over was sensational here and when he hiost form he usually holds it. The Chelmsford looks a nice second up run. Duais was the fastest last 600m in the race and she should get her favoured drier tracks this spring which will suit. Both Montefilia and Francesco Guardi were nice fresh runs from staying types and I thought the 3yo King Colorado was very good and he looks on track for the Rose and Guineas. This will be a good form reference.

Caulfield

We saw Amenable return back with his second win. He could be competitive in a lower tier 1400m-1600m event during the spring.

Savannah Cloud scored a nice win in the Regal Roller and she can be well placed in mares sprint races. There are a couple down the straight in cup week which would suit. Detonator Jack was very good fresh and he could develop into a lightweight Toorak hope. I also liked the run from the former Perth mare Laced Up Heels.

The Quezette looks a strong event with Charm Stone returning a winner. The Magic Millions winner Skirt The Law was very good fresh while Scillian, De Sonic Boom and Tiz Enuf were acceptable runs. De Sonic Booms racing style will go against her a lot but she has the talent to win a 3yo filies 1200m event, maybe down the straight.

Vain Stakes saw a near major boilover when Cylinder just lasted to defeat Ouroboros. Class got the winner through and a longer distance will suit him better. No knock on the runner up who can move through the classes and secure another win soon while I Am Unstoppable was on Saturday but he will improve off that and he will be better at 1400m. Little Brose was given every chance but he does improve off his fresh runs so do not hop off him just yet. Scheelite looked the one who was already looking for the 1600m of the Guineas and he can run well in races like the Guineas Prelude or Bill Stutt leading into the Guineas.

While not quite having the depth of the Winx the Memsie looks a nice form reference. Mr Brightside will be right at the pointy end of the big races up to 1600m and he can run well in a Cox Plate. The Makybe Diva looks a nice aim second up. Pinstriped was very good and he will run in the mile races. Aegon was very good late and he looks to be in contention for the Toorak and Champions Mile. Tuvalu, Pounding and Forgot You all ran well and they can be winners in the next few months, while Attrition is the one I would like to follow from the race. Not sure where he goes, but he looks a nice Epsom, Toorak, Champions Mile type.

The last race of the day saw a few good gallopers return to the track for the spring. The winner looks a nice type for races such as the Sale Cup, Toorak and again the Champions Mile. He could also be a chance of running in the Listed 1800m race on cup day into the Eclipse Stakes. Right You Are was very good fresh and he could win a race like the Heatherlie and Naturalism, maybe even the JRA Cup at the Valley, on his way to the Caulfield Cup. Berkeley Square ran home okay late but he looks a step down from the Cox Plate, Champions Stakes level. All the runners between Frankie Pinot and Makram ran very well. I think Smokin Romans, Full Of Sincerity and Vardani are all hopes in the Listed/group 3 level middle distance and staying events such as the Werribee and Cranbourne Cups etc, coming up over the next few months.

Horses To Follow.

Osipenko. Shannon Stakes or Bill Ritchie.

Cinderella Days. Triscay or Golden Pendant.

Cleveland. Kingston Town or Newcastle Cup.

Autumn Ballet, Mumbai Muse & Kimochi. Furious Stakes, Tea Rose Stakes, Flight Stakes.

Caulfield.

Savannah Cloud & Laced Up Heels. Any mares group 3/Listed event up to 1400m.

Skirt The Law. Both her and Charm Stone are quality but she will be undervalued by the market in the future so she is our one to follow.

I Am Unstoppable. Ran home a sizzling late section and he can sit closer to the speed over a further distance. The McNeil Quality into the Guineas Prelude looks a nice next option for this untapped galloper.

Aegon. His form over the last 12 months has been very good without winning at the top level. He was also returning last season from a long break so I would expect him to be more consistent this season. His racing style is negative, but on this run as well as his Hong Kong effort behind a topline galloper he has to be a hope in anything up to a mile.

Attrition. Stepped up to open aged level and handled himself well. Will improve off that run and he looks major player in races such as the Toorak, Epsom and even maybe the Golden Eagle although that would be a step up in quality. Plenty of upside for this lightly raced 4yo.

Horses Who Need To Improve.

Kalino and Extremely Lucky. Did not run up to expectations in the Show County.

Fawkner Park, King frankel. The favorite here was awful. Is still lightly raced but if he goes forward into the spring he needs to improve significantly. King Frankel was not very well placed weight, distance and he had excuses but he still needs to improve off this to meet and defeat stronger opposition deeper into the spring.

Golden Mile & Mo'unga. These two were below expectations in the Winx. Golden Mile is too inconsistent for my liking so until he wins at this level if he continues to run at group 1 level class he can run without my support. Mo'unga does have a chance to improve out to 1600m and 2000m but he will need to off that run.

Ulanova. The group 1 winner from New Zealand having her first start for the Freedmans was not great. Maybe the stretch out to 1400m will see an improvement but with her having to carry the full penalty and giving her opponents weight in any race she contests, she will need quick improvement to be competitive in what is shaping as a quality year for the 3yo fillies up to 1600m.

Footnote.

Last Thursday the Rowley Mile was run at Hawkesbury and we saw the return of Protagonist at the 1600m. He ran a nice second and he will be a player in races at 1600m+, with a chance of developing into a major race contender later into the spring.

Lets see how the Memsie Day went.

Caulfield.

Race 4. The winner Frigid was very very good in scoring a dominant win. She looks to be able to move through the grades and the Matriarch Stakes on the last day of the Cup week looks a nice option, but the problem is that race is just under two months away.

HCF McNeil Quality. Again the winner here has a lot of upside! Short of his distance range, clearly having major fitness improvement and being in a race which may not have played out well for him, Veight was very good pulling away from a field of good 3yo's. Legacies showed she will be a contender in the fillies races up to 1600m while Hedged might be better suited back in grade. Scheelite was very good late and I just hope he has a bit of speed left in him when they get to Guineas day, while Little Brose looks in need of 1400m.

Heatherlie Stakes. Win of the day for mine. Soulcombe had a terrible prep last autumn and fresh here at 1700m showed fantastic late splits to flash late and win. Loves Flemington, loves the longer distances and if he can finish off as well at 3200m as he did today he will go close to winning the Cup. Remember last years winner of this race did run 2nd in the Cup. Most of the stayers went okay fresh with them looking to be group 3 or listed types. I thought Emissary was satisfactory in his first spring run.

Cockram Stakes. This will be a hot form race. Benedetta showed she had huge improvement from her fresh run and she will not be out of place in the Bobbie Lewis. Parisal, C;est Magique (maybe back to Flemington down the straight) and Wrote To Arataki will all be competitive in anything they contest with the last of those mares out to 1400m. I still think Laced Up Heels ran well and she can win a mares grade listed group 3 1200m/1400m race over the next few months.

Heath 1100. Asfoora is better than mares grade and she won as she should have here. The placegetters ran well but Magic Time looked like she needed the run the race panned out. Up to 1200m and drawn better to sit a little closer she can at least be competitive in a race like the Schillachi.

Memsie Stakes. This was a genuine group 1 race and like the Winx you can say that everyone back to Aegon ran well. The winner is a huge chance of becoming our best horse this prep. Princess Grace was awesome and showed she will be winning a group 1 somewhere this spring, while I Wish I Win was again good without winning first up. Alligator Blood was very good considering the run he got from his gate. Obviously Amenable was awesome but he will need to win to get a run in the Toorak. Bandersnatch was excellent and if gets a softer track at 1400m somewhere he will go close. Osipenko was okay but maybe handicaps are his go this season while I thought Duke De Sessa was good enough at a distance short of his best.

Randwick

Race 4. This race was a benchmark race but the winner Just Fine was responsible for the win of the day. High quality win with a good time and there are better races in store for this galloper!

City Tatt's Cup. The winner ran his best race since arriving in Australia. I thought it was an outstanding ride where he moved towards the front approaching the turn and then kept going. Serpentine was very satisfactory fresh and he will improve further into the prep. Verona might be the new Realm Of Flowers. Her form at 2000m+ is good and she does like Randwick so The Metrop is an obvious target. I am not sure this race has as much depth as the previous staying race we reviewed (even though the runners from that race did nothing here) but these stayers are in form and will get better into the prep.

Furious Stakes. A few fillies missed the start or were slow away including Autumn Ballet so I can forgive her. The winner ran well and showed she might be better than her form suggested. Kimochi Mumbai Muse and Summer Loving were all excellent late. Cigar Flick missed the Silver Shadow and so might have a little more improvement to come getting up to 1400m and 1600m. Platinum Jubilee led and she might be able to lead at a softer pace over 1400m but for me she is more a Brian Crowley, Roman Consul filly.

Concorde Stakes. Going in we had a few questions and after Sunday most of those questions were answered. Both Nature Strip (6th), and Eduardo (4th) have been retired, and we hope they both live a very healthy happy long life being well cared for. The winner Remarque was very good fresh but his rating are better at 1000 and 1100m. Going forward he will need to improve up to the 1200m. In Secret looked awesome in narrowly going down and she will be Godolphin's slot runner in the Everest. While Bella Nipotina showed she is no slouch and she also is better at the 1200m. Not sure she will get a slot but she has to be thought about by slot holders. Rocketing By flashed late and he looks on target to try and defend his Sydney Stakes win last season.

Chelmsford Stakes. Well this race can spring an upset and here we were hit with another one. Navajo Peak was not hopeless in the Winx Stakes and not only did he win here but he won well. Surely the stable aims him at the Epsom where he will get a lightweight. Major Beel looks like he is ticking over nicely and he looks a nice Turnbull Stakes type. Think it Over was just a little one paced so not sure staying at the 1600m next start is correct but his aim is one race at Moonee Valley on the last saturday in October. Lindermann was ridden to win the race but he ran well and he will be better off taking a sit and having the last shot at the leaders late. Hoo Ya Mal got home late and he looks on target for later in the spring. Both Montefilia and Duais were poor and need to improve out to 2000m at their next start.

Tramway Stakes. This race has form all over the finish order. Pericles, Hope In Your Heart, My Oberon, Fireburn, Going Global (no clear run late) all ran well for an Epsom. Hope In Your Heart was awesome but her racing style is aggravating. Skyman ran well for something easier. I thought Olentia was good considering she was jumping a few grades and this was a proper group 2 field. Zeyrek was clo
sing fast late and he looks like he has come back as well as he went out last prep and he could surprise a few in some good races later on. I assume he might target the Think it Over races like the Craven Plate, Hill Stakes and Rosehill Cup.

Race 10. This winner is a smart horse. Not sure where the stable is aiming him but he could develop into a good stakes race contender later in the spring.

Horses To Follow.

Just Fine. Can see this galloper developing into a good 2000m race winner this spring. Maybe they try him at a longer distance but we will see where he ends up. Craven Plate, Hill Stakes, Metrop.

Mumbai Muse. She has a great racing style that will see her get her chance to win her races more than any other filly in the group.

In Secret. She will always be dictated to by barriers and racing patterns but she is a huge chance in the Everest.

Lindermann. This is no criticism but just saying he will be better when ridden in his comfort zone. Out to 1600m will suit better as well and he will be a definite Espom hope, although having that win over Pericles he will be giving him weight.

Hope In Your Heart. We all know her disadvantage, but she is a smart mare and she can contend in anything she contests.

Zeyrek. His form in the autumn was great and he showed with his first up run that he can continue that this spring. Plenty of races around for him and he should be getting the cash at least once over the next few months.

Frigid. Very very stylish win and she can move through her grades.

Veight. Nothing but upside with this fellow. Not sure if he can match up with the Sydney 3yo's but he is a smart horse who will be competitive.

Legacies. Looks a leading 3yo filly in Melbourne and she can target the 1000 Guineas which is a long period off. Maybe the Coolmore is the target but she can win anything she runs in.

Soulcombe. Not sure why we had that prep in the autumn but he looked sensational winning here. We know he gets better over a longer distance and I would bet my life he will run better at Flemington than he does at Caulfield. On his form he does like his runs spaced more than two weeks apart so it will be interesting to see how he gets to Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.

Magic Time. The way the race panned out she was done after two hundred meters. She looked in need of the run and I can see her being better suited out to 1200m and 1400m.

Amenable. Enormous run when up in grade against elite performers in the Memsie. The aim is the Toorak but he will need to win a race between now and then to get his rating up.

Here To Shock. Out to the 1400m, second up he improved. He will do that again as he reaches 1600m and gets further into the prep.

What is going on with I am Invincible.  He's getting better and better with age.  Most stallion closing on their 20th year are getting fewer and few stakes horses.  This boy has never started a season better.

Alright we saw the first big day of the spring take place so lets see how things played out.

Caulfield.

Race 2. You could not have been more impressed with the winner First Immortal. Not sure where he can get before the spring ends but looks like he can develop into a listed/group 3 winner before the spring finishes.

Race 3. Again the winner cardigan Queen was way overs here and she took advantage of a great run and finished of well  showing she will be better suited out to 1400m (maybe the Rose Of Kingston) and back t Flemington. The favorite Red Card was disappointing if you backed her but she can bounce back over the next two months.

Race 4. Nunthorpe is a consistent mare but for me this race all revolves around Frigid. To drop 600m in distance and win is very hard to do and she ran right to her best. Still on target for a race like the Matriarch, just have to find a path to that race.

Race 5 Jim Moloney. Oz Empress was good leading all the way and all three placegetters can be followed although De Sonic Boom has a terrible racing pattern. Poifect looks a nice Manifold, Ethereal and Wakeful type while Subrising was closing hard late and she looks a 2000m+ filly who should love the big open spaces of Flemington.

Race 6 Testa Rossa. These horses take turns in winning. The odds on favorite was shocking here and he will have to prove himself in this grade or higher before I tip or back him. Corner Pocket looks in line to get at least another win this prep.

Race 7 Caulfield Guineas Prelude. Some nice horses here and I think the 3yo's coming down from Sydney will meet a stronger group than they have in recent editions. The top four are definite contenders with Steparty a worthy challenger to Militarize and others coming south. I was taken with Scheelite's run as he lost a length in the run and zoomed home to go down by under a half length.  Not giving up on Veight and Little Brose out to 1600m but they will need to improve if they go towards the Guineas.

Race 8. Naturalism Stakes. The winner Uncle Bryn is a bit inconsistent for me but np doubting he has talent. Maybe more a Cranbourne Cup, Coongy, Moonee Valley Cup type but he is now in the Caulfield Cup and good luck to him. No doubt the placegetters are potential winners over the next two months and I also think that Emissary, Daqainsweet Junior, Sheraz and Virtuous Circle ran home well enough to be competitive in anything they run in. Goldman is short for the Melbourne Cup for me but he is a horse that races on pace and he does love Flemington and he will be dropping in weight into the big one so he does or will have conditions to suit. Sheraz does like dry tracks and if he can draw a gate in the Bart Cummings I will take a bit of the $51.00+ on offer.

Race 9 Underwood Stakes. D Oliver gets his swansong group 1 and good luck to him. Not sure Alligator Blood can win again unless they drop him back for the Champions Mile again on the last day of the Cup week. Tuvalu ran second in that Mile race last year and he looks on target for that race and also a Northerly Stakes back home. Duais was awesome late and she might be getting back to her Brisbane form, and she again loves Flemington, Turnbull Stakes hope. The Caulfield Cup horses in Soulcombe, Right You Are, Without A Fight and Nonconformist all ran really well. The 4yo's were disappointing but I think Lindermann is a better on pace horse and if he draws well in the Turnbull he can win that.

Race 10. Viviane is in career best form and she can win one of the mares sprints over the next two months, maybe the Black Pearl at Geelong is a nice target. On The Lead can bounce back as she is a on pace type and she just got to far back while we just forget Po Kare Kare ran and she can win, maybe if she gets onto a bigger track with a nice long straight. Not sure what he is targeting) probably one of the open class sprints during Cup week), but Ashford Street is coming along nicely and he looks a contender in the listed level again.

Horses To Follow.

Frigid. As stated not sure how she gets to the Matriarch but the Ladies Day Vase and Tesio Stakes both over 1600m look logical targets.

Poifect & Subrising. These two mares look like they will follow the traditional fillies races towards the Oaks so Manifold, Ethereal and then Wakeful and they will both be hard to beat.

Corner Pocket. For me the Sandown Stakes at 1500m looks an ideal target.

Scheelite. No doubt the winner is a genuine Guineas contender as well but we will be getting double figures for him and while his racing pattern is not great he will give a good sight, especially as he gets over 2000m.

Sheraz & Virtuous Circle. Both gallopers do need luck in their races as they get back beyond midfield but they have things in place to make a huge rating leap next start. Back to Flemington, up to 2500m and we should get a dry track. If those conditions are in play they can run well there and also back at headquarters over the next two months in races like the Hotham and Queen Elizabeth.

Soulcombe. While there were a huge number of quality performers in the Underwood this guy screamed Caulfield Cup winner to me. Just dropped slightly on his fresh rating but stayers can do that and then bounce back. If he draws a gate he can sit forward of midfield and he handles all conditions.

Sorry before we get to the Sydney meeting I will add Po Kare Kare as a horse to follow from Caulfield.

Rosehill

Race 4 Heritage Stakes. Top win from a quality colt in Ozzmosis. Not sure the Everest talk is warranted but he can challenge in the Coolmore Stud Stakes. Celestial Legend was awesome here but I am just not sure where he is being aimed. Namesake ran well but he should improve as he gets towards 1600m.

Race 5 Colin Stephen Quality. The winner is in good form and he will miss the Metrop to target the Melbourne Cup. The others look ATC St Leger or Sandown Cup types.

Race 6 Golden Pendant. While Atishu was excellent and Banana Queen backed up her Tibbie win with another good run, this race is all about the winner Espiona. It looks like she has finally hit her strides and is fulfilling her potential. I thought More Secrets was okay for a mare who will be better over 1600m. Atishu looks on target for the Invitation and the Empire Rose. Can Espiona get a slot for the Everest? Yes. Will she be a hope in the Everest? If the speed is on and she draws a gate where she can sit forward of midfield then yes!

Race 7 Shannon Stakes. The top four are all hopes in anything they will race in over the next two months. Waterford would be a nice type for the Hunter and Gong. Flying Crazy would be a nice Moonga, Kevin Heffernan type.

Race 8 Golden Rose. This was a showcase of both horse and rider here. Militarize is a huge huge talent and he is a hope in anything they run him in. Joao Moriera showed his patience and his skill in extricating his mount out of trouble. Encap was very good and his racing style lends itself to him being a hope in any race he contests. Cylinder ran right up to his best, after not getting the best of rides. Butch Cassidy deserves more respect, especially from me after his 4th here. Charm Stone was very good, Moravia got caught in a bad spot at the wrong moment and he looks nice type, while King Colorado ran like a horse looking for 2000m right now so he will go to the Gloaming and Spring Champion and be hard to beat. Shinzo just had too much to overcome and we will need to assess him after another run or two.

Horses To Follow.

Ozzmosis. Major player in the leading 3yo races (Roman Consul into Coolmore Stud Stakes).

Atishu. Looks on target for the Invitation and Empire Rose or even the King Charles.

Waterford. Will go close in a few nice targets over the next few runs.

Militarize. Only a slim margin but he is clearly the best horse from the field, a hope in any race he contests.

King Colorado. Just flat footed having a run at 1400m. Out to 1800m and 2000m he will be more than competitive.

Charm Stone. Not sure if they stretch her out in distance for races like the Caulfield Guineas and the Empire Rose, or whether they bring her back for the Coolmore but whichever way they go she can win!

Okay now the carnival is almost over looking back at our horses to follow, you wonder sometimes why you second guess yourself.

We had the following:

Clevland - Won the Moonee Valley Gold Cup.

Mumbai Muse - Dual stakes winner.

Attrition - Won the Toorak.

Just Fine - Won the Metrop.

Zeyrek - Won the Craven Plate.

Ozzmosis - Won the Coolmore

Atishu won the Champions Stakes

We also had Soulcombe and Sheraz as horses to follow and they finished 2nd and 3rd in the Melbourne Cup.

We had horses like Veight (2nd in the caulfield guineas), I Am Unstoppable (2nd in the Coolmore) and Kimochi (2nd in the Flight).

Some good priced winners and placegetters in there!

well done Voyager.  I tend to follow the ones I picked from the sales which include Veight and I am Unstoppable who unfortunately keeps coming second!

But it was nice to get a two out early in the season with Karavas and Arabian Summer both picks while the three girls In Secret, Espiona and Asfoora have been bright lights to follow.

Sunsets and Aethelflaed have stood up in the three year old ranks while Riff Rocket (mare line) and Aprilia (dam picked) also gave me some cheer.

Tiz Invincible was good early and Wild Planet's last  win was over futher than he'd ever been.  Ersa and Rovno Amber are also showing some promise.

But I admit my favourite horse at the moment is Mr Brightside who I didn't pick but comes from a great female line and it is so good to see another great horse emerge from that line.

Good to read through all that, Voyager. This Spring delivered a lot more than I was expecting! Good job re your early comments on Sheraz! Wish I'd read them before now!

It certainly has been an interesting start to the season.  Some things stay the same with I am Invincible and So You Think up the top of the sires standings.  But Zoustar and Pride of Dubai have had an enormous run throughout this last carnival.  While 2nd season stallions like Trapeze Artist, Prized Icon and Harry Angel produced their first G1 winners and The Autumn Sun, Grunt, Justify, Written By, Brave Smash and Sioux Nation all got black type winners or G1 placegetters or both.

I could be a changing of the guard is coming with two first season sires Alabama Express and Tassort both with 3 winners already and Sun City, Pierata, Exceedance. Cosmic Force and Strasbourg already producing winners.  And I didn't give the locals much chance this crop with Blue Point and Too Darn Hot the pick outs to me.  So it shows how wrong I can be.

We saw I am Invincible's son Hellbent get it first G1 winner yesterday.  Zoustar get another G1 winner and then some older names with Written Tycoon (2), Spirit of Boom, Playing God, Maurice, Brazen Beau and Pride of Dubai.

The staying events have on the whole gone to European bred stayers so it was nice to see and Australian Muramasa beating a NZ in Ladies Man in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.  But where were the NZ colts and fillies in the early classics?  The VRC Derby had three who all finished at the back of the field.  They did better in the Oaks with a fine third but only one other mid field runner.

Likewise only three turned up for the Spring Champion S for the best finish of 6th.  Then in the mile events we saw on runner in the Flight (10th), two ran in the Caulfield Guineas with Militarize (by Australia based Dundeel) 5th and an 11th.  While in the 1000 Guineas Coeur Volante ran well for 4th and Zourion (by Zoustar) finished 8th.

So either all the purchases for the NZ sales are late bloomers or sprinters?

My favourite runner for the spring was Mr Brightside who did stand up and be counted for the Kiwi's while I had a soft sport for oldtimer Buffalo River who had a couple of wins after a time in the wilderness.

Tom Kitten's Spring Champion win was easy a bit like most of Imperatriz (I am Invincible) wins for the season.  She does gallop she waltzes over the turf.  That first win when she rounded the field up like they were standing still still being my favourite.

Alligator Blood also have a very good spring although both he and Mr Brightside went down in the Cox Plate it was a close call and anywhere after the post or before the post I think Mr Brightside might of had the win.  Just didn't get his head right for the shot that mattered.

Fangirl was good but hard to find on the right day.  Riff Rocket and Aprilia had a very close finish in the Derby so hopefully both can bring the form forward to the Autumn.  Pride of Jenni, Hypothetical, Deny Knowledge, Chandon Burj etc gave Pride of Dubai his best spring ever.

It will be interesting who turns up in the Autumn.  But the spring certainly had a few twists and turns.

Nice write-up furious, making me excited for the autumn already! Which will come around soon enough, by the time we get through the Sandown Caulfield meeting in a fortnight, the Ingham and silly season, it'll only be a few weeks and the good races will be starting again.

Seeing Manchester United relegated would mean more than words can describe to me.

Classic aussie racing on Saturday...three handicap miles worth $1.5m, $1m and 500k.  And lo and behold we have three mediocre fields. Feel sorry for WA the most...at least their race has always been in this location on the calendar

Is it just me or have Godolphin gone quiet at the moment.

And Chris Waller who was having a quieter time than usual in the stakes races has stepped up and said I'm back.  While Gay and Adrians strangle hold on the slipper became a little less of a sure thing over the weekend.

Just as a thought.  Our original 6 picks from the yearling sales was to see if we could do as good as Gai with her picks.  Glad it wasn't this season with the two year olds in her stable - well unless we had picked the same ones.

Gai got a few more than 6 picks.
She nommed 150 for the slipper

True I think we had to pick six from the Easter Sale under the cost of what her six cost.
