Staggering to think your top 3 did not win a G1. They were very good sprinters. I reckon if they were around today, they would all have at least one.
I remember the old joke about Show County, a rocket out of the gates and jockey B Wood glued to the saddle.

He was before group/graded races.

He did though win what are now grade 1 jumps races in the UK.

Good call re Big Dreams.  24 stakes performances, winning eight at Gp2 or Gp3 level, with six Gp1 placings.

Anyone remember a colt called Brave Warrior, trained in Brisbane by Eric Kirwin in the mid-1990’s?

Ran in 8 G1 races in his career & placed in 5 of them ranging in distance from 1500m-2400m.

The only reason he popped to mind is that there’s a Brave Warrior running around at Ballina today in Race 3.

Foxy, That new Brave Warrior was the very horse that inspired this thread. LOL

The old Brave Warrior got bumped off in those G1 races by some damn good gallopers like Durbridge, Danewin & Turridu.

6 stakes wins and nine stakes placings just 22 starts.

Died prematurely after just two seasons at stud, but left 7 stakes-winners from only 107 live foals including four times Gp1 winner and excellent sire Show A Heart.

His Magic Millions win was stunningly spectacular.

I think Vo Rogue bumped him off in a George Main Stakes, can still recall Ian Craigs race call ‘his Sydney hoodoo finally been broken”.  It was Vo’s only win in Sydney.

Groucho was pretty popular at stud too for a few decades after he retired.

It was whilst going through the form of Vo Rogue that I was reminded of Groucho.

Catkins' 3yo Gracilistyla made a nice debut for 3rd at Kenso today (despite a dubious ride).

Here’s a good one, not only did he not win a G1 but he never won a black type race.  Amazing when you look at his top 4 placings in Australia.

ROYAL CREATION (NZ)

1989 Toorak Handicap- 4th
1990 Underwood Stakes - 2nd
1990 Turnbull Stskes - 2nd
1991 Chipping Norton - 2nd
1991 Rawson Stakes- 2nd
1991 Doncaster Handicap 2nd
1991 Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2nd
1991 Warwick Stakes 3rd
1991 Chelmsford Stakes 2nd
1991 Epsom Handicap 4th
1991 Caulfield Cup 3rd

WOW!

THAT is an amazing get.

I remember backing him in the 1990 Turnbull because he got about 2 or 3 kilos off Better Loosen Up. Probably the only time in BLUs career I bet against him.

Quite an astonishing place getting record & I’ve probably missed a few black type placings back in NZ too.

My memory of him was triggered by just watching a replay of the 1991 Rawson Stakes on YouTube.

1. Super Impose
2. Royal Creation
3. Dr Grace

Would be interesting to see a list of the other horses that knocked him off in G1 races.

Pretty sure he lost three G1's by less than a head.  To Sound Horizon, Warning and Vo Rogue.

I was at Randwick the day when Sound Horizon leapt out of the ground and nabbed him in the last few strides of the Epsom.

Interesting fact about Groucho - he was Damien Oliver's first group winner. Olly picked up the ride as an apprentice, coming up from Freedmans melbourne stable due to the senior jockeys strike.
