This is going to be a most interesting sale, both in terms of whether physical participation will be permitted and how the market will adjust to the current uncertainty. It looks a strong catalogue but looks disproportionately weighted to a few stallions as opposed to a more even spread. Of the freshmen, Hellbent, Merchant Navy, Pariah and particularly Russian Revolution have been given every chance with strong representation across the board. I agree with Goldey on the other thread that the Russian Revolutions look like a really attractive, marketable bunch.

Who is nervous? American Pharoah vendors, I would suggest, potentially also those with a Star Turn? I am assuming that the market won't mark Maurice too hard yet. I'd be interested on views on Capitalist - he is going OK but he has had absolutely every chance and they should be pre-Christmas. There are 48 of them to sell.

Yep, very intriguing Robbo.

Never liked Star Turn and he's legless early doors.  American Pharoah was always a risk but wouldn't think anyone would've been looking for him to throw early comers.  Capitalist ok but vendors selling those with ordinary female families would surely be be experiencing high blood pressure.  Haven't given much thought to Maurice.

The stallion whose progeny are showing they will be racehorses, considering most looked like late maturers is Flying Artie

Capitalist will be a handy sire simply because of opportunity. He will only be a pale imitation of W.T.

How are you supposed to get all the way through this catalogue.

I beginning to think I most well just follow horses out of fillies I've picked in previous years.  I mean Truly Great, Classique Legend, Quick Thinker, Sneaky Five, Handle the Truth, Fake Love, Tyzone and Victoria Quay are streets in front of many I've picked in recent years.  Even though with so many sales on line to view I've followed more than the 25 I used to pick out of the Easter Sales.  And as I follow the foals out of the mares It's getting hard to keep track of them all.

But not being able to get to the sales anymore is depressing.  I miss patting all those eager young noses and seeing the different personalities both in the stable and ring.  You don't seem to pick that up so much on the TV or computer.

I haven't been near a horse since mid 2019 and I think I'm having withdrawal syndromes.  Working in the industry but away from the main participants is difficult.

Yep, everything done on the computer takes a lot of fun out of it.  Thumbs Down  So much missed out on, sitting glued to a screen with lot after lot passing by, until you become cross eyed.
No smell of horses,, No poopies to step in if you dont pay attention Wink, no socialising and catching up on goss.

It's taken me over a month to plough through the catalogue - and that was only at a cursory level.  If I were looking to select for actual purchase it would be absolute murder.

Looks like Book 3 will be gone next year with the small number of entries.

Posted By: furious
Date Posted: 06 Jan 2021 at 11:40am
Hopefully that small number will find homes.  How many buyers can there be by the end of the catalogue.

Posted By: Mumtaz
Date Posted: 06 Jan 2021 at 2:09pm
Well, those looking for potential value for money will go on the last day for the tail end of Book 2 (as you say, an exhausted market) and any outstanding types in Book 3.  They could well give the earlier days a miss thinking those yearlings will go for more money as would-be buyers would be fresher and more funded.

Certainly if are seller with a yearling at Book 3 level, I think the March sale would offer more chances of coming ahead financially.

Hahaha.......great minds & all that? I was just checking results & the only one I've found to comment on (only checked pics of the odd ones of interest) & wouldn't you just know it? LOL
I did spot the tied in below the knees flaw but initially the terribly balanced hind feet Shocked Check the coronet band angles! The OH heel bulb is virtually on the ground & as only a yearling Angry What are these farries learning or maybe the question of who the hell's teaching them, is what should be asked!

I admit to overlooking the hind feet somewhat.

Gee guys I can only pick on pedigree and that 113 is out of a Bonaria a daughter of Decidity who I picked from the sales.  Selling with the Widden draft.  Surely they should know about hoof care ect.  It you can't trust the big stables and studs to get it right we are in trouble.

now on a positive note
Results seem to have held up well. So far on par with last year ( thanks to IamI, WT, Seb , Snitz, Cap & MN amongt others)
MNavn much preferred over RRev ( MN's do look like runners)
Market off Astern & POD
Also looks like market has woken up to Rubick & I'd be worried if I paid $50K for Deep F service in 2020

With sellers appearing to be ready to meet the market & the Oz buying bench being quite strong even without a lot of O/s competition I'd say MM staff & vendors will sleep well tonight, but let'see how the large book & long tail affects the overall outcome.

Both Hellbent & Pariah have had the positive start one would expect  from such professional operators as Arrowfield & Yarraman

Fairytale? Has to be, Magnier pays 1.9 for a first foal and an average pedigree? We know alcohol plays a huge part in the selling/buying process, never have I witnessed so many drunks in one place before 3pm. David Ellis the large Kiwi with the annoying wink, he pays K825 and K600 for a couple of Fastnet Rocks. The colts no,  the fillies go ok, the colts are generally bloody useless, but David might not care.
I do know the NZ economy is so strong and business is booming, so maybe there are quite a few with tax problems and wish to minimise their tax.....if they run it's ok, if they don't...even better. Magnier is just a w#anker.

Bonjour you could be a tad hard on the pedigree.  Yes its not the Redoute's family or the Black Caviar family etc etc.  But the dam was a stakes winner or 8 races and many mares retire maidens.  Her dam was a 1/2 sister to two G1 winners.  The stallions used Snitzel (well four times top), O'Reilly (champion son of Last Tycoon), Pins (one of the most versitile sons of Snippets with a champion broodmare as his grandam and stakes winning dam with Kaoru Star as well), Centaine (Century, Better Boy, Vain, Todman you name it he had it and we sent him to NZ) etc.  While the dam is inbred to Pakistan sire of Hunza the grandam of O'Reilly and also a champion broodmare with 5 stakes winners to her name.

Well Snitzel loves Snippets so Pins can't hurt.

Redoute's and Last Tycoon have hit the mark plenty of times.  So sireline Redoute's over dam's sire O'Reilly gets a tick.

Just look at the Danehill blood with Centaine crosses - that gets a tick.

And he did look the part of being light on his feet and moved well from what I could see to my eye (which to be very truthful is not up to alot on here).  But no his pedigree had enough.  Believe me many with much less in there pedigree have sold for more.

Posted By: Bonjour
Date Posted: 13 Jan 2021 at 12:26pm
Kind of disagree here Furious, with respect of course. We owned an O'Reilly mare, she had 14 foals, 12 won, they are special the O'Reilly's for sure, but, this dam won a listed and placed in a weak Brizzie Gr2....brave or stupid paying that money for a first foal, I'd back stupid, time will tell, IMO you're going too far back to Hunza, most pedigrees will allow you to find a 'diamond in the rough'......1.9 buys you a mansion in the right city, the chances of a great ROI with this one, not good........at least Magnier buys himself and no need for a bloodsucker, sorry, bloodstock agent.......#otherpeoplesmoney

You've been in this caper for longer than I, just, it never ceases to amaze me, people walk onto a racecourse and and into a horse auction and their heads turn into pumpkins.

I agree in that it could be not worth anything as a racehorse.  That can happen to the very best of of the breed.  But I will say again.  I've seen worse pedigrees with no G1 class on the page bring over $1,000,000.  So I won't say this one was in that boat.  It was a sensible pedigree breed to hopefully bring out the best possible foal.

Okay some facts from 2018
Of the 40 colts who bought $750K or more:
                             7 went to HK etc
2 to NZ ( where 1 was handy Gr 3 wnr)
                             1 died, 1 un-named, 1 unraced
28 raced in Oz   a very healthy %age indeed
                              25 have won a race : a tremendous result

BUT in total they cost $46.4 million for a racetrack return of $4 million thus far ( and they are 4yo's)
and not a stallion prospect amongst them ( even though 5 have won lower level black type. Definitely NO Melb/Syd  Aut/Spr stakes races of quality or even Gr3)
One foolhardy young fellow spent $8 million of other peoples money for a racetrack return of  $620K thus  far   Add on costs and investors would be lucky to get back 55 of their total investment
Of the 7 purchased by the shooting star  5 wnrs (total 8 races) 1 non-wnr,  1u/r
To be fair Stronger did win 3 races( Inc a Qld s/w) And a whopping $180 K before heading to HK

Just checked out the $1.8 mill Kingman.   As John McEnroe would say "are you serious "
Long narrow head, not a lot of strength behind saddle and much to Gay's disgust on this one 4 different hoof angles, and I didn't look too hard and we are facetiously told he ticked all the boxes. The underbidder was that young master of lemon selection

Now to be fair to J Harron B/stock.  I did particularly like lot 349 Shalaa , very nice early type. early success/ easy to market but does he have a stalliond pedigree for Oz. woild get money back on the HK market.
Old mate Magnier squared the ledger with his astute purchase of lot 362 Fast R? Happy Hannah colt for $360K.
I did like the Vic colt yndicate purchase lot 322 by Zoutar.  Very nice horse
Now talking about astute the Lindsay Park team went quietly about their business and bought 2 real racehorses  lot 255 P.O.D  and lot365  F. Artie

And finally Fung/Phoenix must think that after 14 years Snitzel is finally going to become a sire of sires. They have spent overs

However as Day 3 concludes it's hard to imagine more than a few buyers got value for money, many lots selling for much more than their real value imho.

Too much work today so didn't get to watch.  Like SC I liked the Custard pedigree but most of my picks so far on the pedigree page have been all over the shot but I have been liking the Pariah's and following three from yesterday the Belscencia, Astophysical Jet and Astral Miss.  Don't have a clue if the legs are out but look ok to me.  He seems to have served plenty of nice if not spectacular mares.  I've had luck with the Lundi and Fly Me family also but didn't get to see them today.

Oh and Gay love the dapples on the yearling above.  Reminds me to seeing Anabaa.  He always had that dappled up coat.

It appears that way Antlowes but REMEMBER these are the best of this years crop. A further 42 have to find homes at Classic and ditto 17 at Melb Prem and thats only part of the crop. There are many still to find there way into a lesser catalogue
With 200+ vying for a catalogue spot unless you crack MM or he starts producing class Spring Autumn Syd/ Melb stakeswinners at better than his current pedestrian rate of 3% I'd say most future vendors are cooked
COLD HEARTED ECONOMIC FACT   Buyers move on to new fashion especially this current crop of First Season Stallions even given that DF is well marketed
It is doubtful his average sale price will increase greatly but in 2023 you will need to factor in $100K costs just to break even.  That is what I'd be worried about and that is what I was alluding to. DO THE SUMS

I think Mick Price has bought a nice Merchant Navy colt, lot 269 from a long, long line of stakes and city-class winners (despite mum not getting anywhere near that level, or her $750k price tag). In any case, $170k looks like a nice buy. Not too expensive to geld (should the need arise), not too cheap to syndicate to his better clients.

Also like the potential of lot 615, the Highland Reel 1/2 brother to Doctor Doom. Mum is 6/6 for runners to winners. $180k might be a little hard to sell, but the finished product might go alright.... $76k pinhook, so there's been a couple of nice drinks in him already.

James Bester has bought the pick of the Flying Arties sold to date (imo), lot 444 out of a Scat Daddy mare. American listed level is, admittedly, a touchy subject, but we can all agree that it is at least city class. So, $180k for a nice size filly with a reasonable maternal line is good business for both sides of the table... probably ends up with Gai?

I had a shortlist of 15 i liked in this sale. 11 have sold so far. Most of those sold went for what i consider overs in price, and one went for too much unders.

One that i loved and who went for imo a bit unders was Lot 293 a grey SYT filly. 220K. It was bought by Big Red Farm in Japan. Does anyone know if they get them trained here by anyone or do they take them to Japan straight away?

Bit hard to follow in Japan if i choose her in the comp.

Interested in lot 804 I think it is.  Just because it has local connections who did very well out of the mare , Slots, when racing.  Going thru Torryburn .  Havnt even looked at it so will some of you smart ones have a look and give me an opinion please ?

Looks a nice enough type overall without a stunning head LOL which I doubt will deter many Big smile

Lot 804 - So You Think (NZ) / Slots (AUS)

Reserve 80 thous.  Sold for 160 thous.   Have to be happy with that.
However.   They stuffed around with the lot 2 before him.   Went from opening at about 100 thous and up by 5 and 10 thous bids to final 720 thous sale.  How much time should they spend on one horse FF$.
Even the auctioneer said we will have to bring in the next 3 together to make up time.
Then this horse comes in and he goes up to 160 and before anyone has time to make another bid they knock him down ????
Why do they give one horse so much time, then crack off another quick smart ?

Bought into a lovely, big Vancouver filly from Swiftly Red at last year's digital Vobis Gold Yearling sale.  She was knocked down for $25,000.

Her half brother by Impending which I didn't think was as good a type sold at MM yesterday for $240,000!
