Three cheers for Elon Musk, launching a rocket, about 50 metres past the Goodyear Blimp.

Hip hip, hooray

Human spaceflight, is largely fantasy. It is a task far better suited to specially-designed hardware, the frailties of the human frame are such that Mars will not become a scene of human habitation any time soon.

It is a frigid, airless, radiation-drenched dump, the idea that there can be a "second Earth", is damaging fiction, that lends credence to the dangerous idea that we have options if we stuff-up our home planet.

Almost 60 years ago, humans landed on the moon.
Elon Musk must feel like useless garbage compared to that feat.

But hey, lets all celebrate a lesser feat, 60 years after a greater one.

Wow, that makes sense.

Air travel wasn't all over when flight  was conquered at Kitty Hawk.

They did a bit since then.

Different thing altogether. Only the protection of the earth's magnetic field, makes the space station habitable, cosmic rays are an extreme hazard, even the moon astronauts were adversely affected by their brief exposure.

What does that have to do with the great potential benefits of space travel and interplanetary exploration within our solar system? If people were content sitting in caves we would still be sitting in caves.

The exploration should be done by robots, catering to the fragility of humans in the non-Earth orbit field is impossibly costly. Carl Sagan said as much 40 years ago, it still holds true. Musk and his people on Mars in his lifetime, not going to happen.

I don't think you understand the difficulties imposed by cosmic rays, which are mass particles with tremendous kinetic energy, that are exceedingly difficult to shield against.

I reckon the whole space thing is just about trying to find a better world to live in, a bit like sci-fi stuff. Massive waste of money and time, but good for new creative ideas. God knows we need some, or we're stuck with an earth that'll be gone if we don't stop using deodorant etc.

Talking about a massive waste of time and money, and given your 10 posts or so over the last 3 1/2 hours, shouldn't you be reviewing students' assignments or preparing for tomorrow's classes? Shocked  Big smile

Just back to the original moon conquest, was the Lunar takeoff leaving the moon, actually filmed from the moon?
Or did they just make a film re-enactment of what it would have looked like?

Happy with Space X and its CGI fx, when docking?

The modern generation sure do make bad CGI.

But you happy with it PT?

suggest its the tete a tete ( although far from being private.)with sc was the problem.

SpaceX crew launches at NASA Kennedy Space Center as CEO Elon Musk 'likely' has coronavirus

SpaceX has launched four astronauts to the International Space Station.

Key points:

  • The rocket is manned by three American astronauts and one from Japan
  • The capsule has been called Resilience in response to the challenges of 2020
  • SpaceX CEO Elon Musk says he "most likely" has a moderate case of coronavirus

It's NASA's first mission sending crew into orbit aboard a privately-owned spaceship.

The flight to the space station is about 27 and a half hours "door to door" and it should be entirely automated, although the crew can take control if needed.

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, has to keep away from the launch due to COVID-19.

Vice-President Mike Pence travelled to NASA's Kennedy Space Center for the long-awaited start of regular crew rotations aboard privately owned and operated capsules.

It also marks the second time in nearly a decade that  https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-05-31/space-x-launches-astronauts-to-iss-from-nasa-pad/12304294" rel="nofollow - astronauts were set to rocket into orbit from the US . more...
