Luke Nolen has been removed as the rider of Melbourne Cup favourite Constantinople with Everest-winning jockey Glen Boss securing the mount.
Nolen, who enjoyed an unblemished 22-win record aboard champion sprinting mare Black Caviar between 2009 and 2013, endured a luckless passage aboard Constantinople in Saturday’s $5m Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (2400m).
Constantinople was the first Northern Hemisphere three-year-old to contest the Caulfield Cup and finished an eye-catching fourth after jumping slowly and then finding interference approaching the home turn and early in the straight.
"He was terrific," Nolen said post-race.
"It was a muddling-run race and with a big-striding horse, that was probably against us from an inside draw.
"We can look at the silver lining, he doesn’t get a penalty for the Melbourne Cup and Flemington will suit."
It's understood the decision to part company with Nolen and use Boss has been inspired by the ownership group.
Coolmore retained a quarter-share in Constantinople when he transferred from Aidan O’Brien to Lindsay Park Racing.
Boss guided the Coolmore part-owned three-year-old colt Yes Yes Yes to victory in Saturday’s $14m Everest (1200m) at Randwick. He has also ridden many horses for Constantinople’s part-owner Scott Perrin, the pair sharing a healthy friendship.
Constantinople will carry 52.5kg in the Melbourne Cup and Boss, a natural lightweight rider, will have no trouble making the weight.
Tom Dabernig, who trains Constantinople in partnership with David and Ben Hayes, described his Caulfield Cup effort as ‘brilliant’.
"I think he'll be a lot more suited with the bigger track at Flemington,” Dabernig said.
"We bought him as a Melbourne Cup horse. Pulling up he wouldn't have blown a candle out.
"He's still a big baby, he's only three and he'll get better with racing."

Is he staying here in Aust? Or is David taking him to HK when he starts training up there again.
A lot of the European commentators were doubting his capacity to run 3200m at this point in his career and were proven correct today with his mediocre 13th.
Only start 10 today, so hopefully plenty of natural improvement to come. Will be very interesting to see how Lindsay Park manage him in 2020.

I think T that one of the senior members of the Australian Bloodstock group is a close friend of Lees.
I like Kris as a trainer, but I agree, he is not a group 1 trainer, as his strike rate with the number of group 1 starters he has is not good.

Not sure if he’s been to the trials yet, but remember reading something about him resuming in the St George Stks 1800m - which is only 3 weeks away.

I know he was blowing out the cobwebs in the St George Stks yesterday & it was hard to make up ground, but watching the replay that was a very pedestrian effort running last beaten over 7 lengths.
He’s still 2nd favourite for the Tancred Stks, but he’ll have to have to make massive improvement at his next start in the Aust Cup to be chance in the target races in Sydney.

I noticed that Norway (another ex-Aiden OBrien stayer) is currently for sale on Inglis Digital after neither CJW or Pete Moody could spark him into form.
Maybe Constantinople will pop up for sale shortly, or they could put him in a trial hurdle & see if hes adept at jumping.

You shouldn't be surprised Red Rancher , most that are sold have reached their mark and on the slide , their form may look good but remember something has to run 2nd or 3 rd in small fields , plus the fact there maybe a hidden internal problem or a suspensory that on the wane but 3 months in the paddock may hide it until the pressure goes on ( 6 months later ) Caveat Emptor mate , the Poms ain't mugs , anyone here improves Wallers I sincerely doubt it. Warrnambool-based trainer Aaron Purcell says he is going to go right back to basics after buying one-time Melbourne Cup favourite Constantinople. The former import, who ran fourth in the 2019 Caulfield Cup for Lindsay Park, was knocked down to Purcell for $70,000 at this month's Inglis Digital sale. The five-year-old has failed to hit those 2019 heights, and has battled injuries, with his most recent outing a 38.4-length defeat in the Listed Andrew Ramsden last month. Purcell said he is hopeful the change of scenery will help spark Constantinople. "He is a high-class horse that has obviously lost his way for a few different reasons, I have been told," Purcell said. "We will just work on them, try and get him going again and work out where we are. There's no plans. "Obviously he had big expectations early on and they have disappeared now. So we can poke along and do things without much pressure and run him when he is ready. "We will get him going and then work a plan out and readjust that plan as we go. "It's good to have good horses in the stable and hopefully we can get him back to form and win a decent race."

Aaron Purcell is not a cookie cutter trainer. Thinks outside the square & can get the best out of stamina horses. His CV does include most of the major marathon jumps races too, which is testament to this. Hes had quite a few imports over the years, generally C-graders but still gets them winning at their grade. So will be fascinating to see if he can resurrect Constantinople.

AP goes alright and a good horseman to boot , just a curiosity question , was this horse a N/H 3/yo when he ran in the Melbourne cup ? if so that would make about 8-10 n/h 3/yo since those 3 lollipops went like Oakleigh Plate horses about 10 years ago and finished a furlong or two behind the winner , then shot thru like a Bondi tram with the trainer the same night and not a word said , they take this race too casual for the young ones no matter what they've done back home , btw any news on Tiger Moth.?

Interestingly that was his first black type placing since running 2nd to Logician in the G2 Great Voltigeur at York in 2019!
Although he trialled over the hurdles last month, there might just be another flat win for him over the winter before he goes jumping.

I was on course yesterday for his hurdle debut & he certainly had the crowd thrilled tearing away down the hill before getting run down late by Blandford Lad.
Having now watched the replay, he certainly put in a few sticky leaps and jumped the last like a cat. So room for improvement for sure.
But overall a more than satisfactory debut & brought along patiently he should have a good career as a hurdler.

Geez Aaron Purcell has got ‘Connie’ in tip top order. Another really good run for 3rd placing in R1 at Flemington.
Whilst a return to the hurdles is in his future, I’d seriously think about the Flemington 1849 Cup over 2800m next month. It’s a $150k race in mid July, and he can then look to pick off a hurdle in August.
