He seemed to be hitting his straps as a handy stayer over the summer.

We have targeted this race for him this prep. Trials have been alright - but his Raceday performance has been lacklustre this prep. Hopefully this is the spark he needs.

From the stable website:

Racing Preview - 12/02/19

Warrnambool + Andrea Mantegna + hurdles = exciting.

The opportunity to take a horse with serious Flat form over obstacles is an extremely luring one, and ANDREA MANTEGNA (Race 1, Richard Cully) fits the bill to a tee. As a smart performer on the level who jumps really well, there’s every reason to think he can make the transition. We’re counting on him not over-exerting himself in the early stages, as if he can switch off his ability from the Flat could and should prove deadly at the latter end of the race. Darabad and Double Bluff do also bring over good form, so it is probably an above average race of its type.

Thanks to CG for the detailed explanation on Andrea’s last start failure at Gawler.

Well if he is pressing on for another start this winter, there’s a 3200m hurdle worth $45,000 on at Morphettville next weekend. I’m not expecting noms to be that strong, so it might be a race to think about. He’s done pretty well on 3 previous trips to Morphettville with a win & 2 placings from 3 starts.

Posted By: Second Chance
Date Posted: 21 Jul 2019 at 4:23pm
All things being equal the fact he over-raced last start wasn't a real good sign.

Guess we'll all know a bit more next time around.

You’re welcome.
I’m only a minor entry in a syndicate so don’t have much say.
I’ve been extremely happy with RTD and Archie so will trust their decision.

For those that are interested. The post race report below:

What a frustrating race to watch for owners of big Magna who made the trip to Gawler to contest another hurdle race last Saturday. With winkers added to get him to focus more on his racing. he jumped well from the barrier and settled into third spot just as the leaders dropped anchor, and he fired up immediately. Unfortuanately the pace was horrible for a lap and a half, and Magna pulled all the way. Jockey Richard Cully should have given him his head and allowed him to bowl along in front. Instead he chose to fight him for 2000m, and no horse can finish a race off after doing that much work in the run. He did however work to the line well under the circumstances to finish fourth. The horse has pulled up remarkably well and we will plan to take the winkers off and change jockeys before finding him another jumps race before the end of the season.

Well I’m on Andrea today. Surprised he’s third in the market, thought he’d be fave.

Robbies Star generally needs super heavy track to show his best, whilst I don’t think the form behind You’ll Dash For Cash is very strong.

I reckon AM is well placed. Give him strength 🤞

He still overraces rather fiercely.
Only just missed.

Posted By: crooked_gambler
Date Posted: 02 Aug 2019 at 12:45pm
He tries so hard, decided to send him for a well deserved spell. See below stable report:

It was another huge effort by big Magna on Saturday in Adelaide to only just miss again for a second. Ridden much more positively by Tom Ryan the horse was a little keen early and he was allowed to stride along and went to the lead. Coming to the final two hurdles a win looked likely. Unfortunately he just hit the last hurdle at pace and lost a little momentum, and the horse inside him snuck up for a win by the barest of margins. His current preparation has ticked over 12 months and we now feel it's time to give him a well earned spell. He will have a good three to four month break now and be prepared for the Warrnambool carnival next season.

Handy hurdler resuming tonight at MV over 1600m.

Has changed stables from Archie Alexander to Paul Preuesker. Can’t recall Paul having many jumpers over the years.

Hopefully part-owner Crooked Gambler is still around & can give us some insight on reason for the stable change.

Hey everyone.
The big fella is tracking up well for his target of the May Carnival at Warrnambool.
Will definitely need a few flat races to build up some fitness before he hits the hurdle trials

The crew felt as though Pauls facilities would be better suited to the horse, lots of swimming and sand work.

He has thrived in the country air but he is just going for a night out tonight.

Just a little update on Magna, hes had another change of trainers . So many Ive lost count LOL

Unfortunately because of the whole border shutdown and our intention of targeting a couple of those weaker Adelaide staying races we have had to transfer him to an Adelaide trainer.

We have been lucky enough to find a beach set up with David Jolly so he will be staying with David until he comes back to Victoria

Not happy about the decision at all.
What is the point of having a whip rule if they are not going to do anything about it? I am of the belief that if you break a rule, you be disqualified. Just like you would for a swab or weighing in light.

How one can clearly cheat and not just one rule, he used the whip 13 times (thats nearly triple the allowance) he also used it in multiple strides which is also not allowed.

Clearly the rule is a joke if the Stewards think a piss weak fine and jockey suspension is acceptable. Who is to say if we were allowed to use the whip more that our horse wins.... we did the right thing and the other horse didnt.  Not happy Jan!!!

Feel for you CG, but I think we can now safely say with the evidence we have that the rule is just a piece of window dressing for the animal rights activists and it has nothing to do with actual racing rule breaches.

Was in super form in 2020, his 3 runs for 2021 have been pretty plain.  Perhaps he just needs Good track conditions.

The old boy is in good condition, no excuses for his performances, other than maybe lack of fitness.
We are trying to get him up to Darwin for the Cup. He would need to improve next time out though, otherwise it might be time for the old boy to hang up the boots.

Bourke, Preusker, Jolly, Bobbin, Jolly again.  Who's next?

Posted By: crooked_gambler
Date Posted: 30 May 2021 at 8:15pm
Simple explanation for that really, is mainly due to COVID.

Bourke was pre training the horse for Preusker and we needed to get him to the beach, had him stabled there so he could work on the beach as at the time no horses were allowed to travel for work/trials.

We then wanted to try him in SA as the staying races are generally easier, at the time the borders were closed so we had to have the horse trained in the state.

At the end of the prep he returned to Vic and spelled, Bobbin looked after the horse until he was ready to go back to SA.

Magna has come through his last run fine so we are sending him over to Port Augusta to have a look at how he handles the dirt. Will go around in the Cup on Sunday over 2300m. He is going to be top weight so will likely claim on him.

We've decided to retire big Magna, he's just had enough of the racing caper!
He is heading off for a break before commencing a retraining program which will help determine what's next for him. One thing that is certain, he will be loved forever wherever we end up.

Just thought I'd pop in with an update as I know Magna had a few followers on TBV.
He is now in his forever home absolutely loving life with Tracey, a staff member at David Jolly's.

I've attached a pic of the pair lazing about in the paddock.  Still looking for my next champ Wink

Forgot to mention what he is up to, but he is progressing in his retraining and it is hoped that he will become an eventer in 2022
