Someone mentioned we should have a weight loss topic, not a bad idea, but why just weight loss, how about any health goals we have? Can ask for advice, encouragement etc.
I'll kick it off, I want to get to 100kg by the start of the AFL season, so about the start of April. Only about 13 weeks away so would need to go just over 1kg a week (I'm about 115 now), probably a big ask, but hopefully I get close.
Just went to the pool for a session, had planned to do somewhere between 1000-1200, hit the wall at 800, was short of a run thats for sure! But least I got there and did it. Plan to have a 20 min run this afternoon followed by 10 mins of interval boxing.
Planned to take an extended break from alcohol in new year, but have decided to start that early, New Years isn't a big night for me anymore anyway, will just spend it with the kids so I won't miss a beer or two. Going to try stay of it until round one of the AFL, Lions v Pies at The Gabba, might let my hair down that night if I've reached my goal...

Forget going stupid with exercise, just cut out all the gelati you no doubt shove down your gullet. It's 90% diet.

E&E. I think eating healthy keeps you from piling it on, but if , like me, you have already piled it on, just healthy eating wont budge it without some form of exercise, I find. You need something to shift it once its there .

Not my experience at all. There was a time I was up around the 110kg mark many years ago. Simply eating well saw me lost 15kg in about 6 months. Ask any trainer and they will tell you it is majority your diet. People go out and smash a workout and then smash a cheeseburger thinking they've wasn't it. Wrong. Save your money on the trainer and just eat properly and you will be fine. Once you're eating right then perhaps a little training will help you tone up but its a waste of time if you're still eating poorly.

It is a very simple equation on the principle of energy in, energy out.
You calculate from your present weight and activity level, how many calories your body requires to maintain it's current weight.
There are plenty of charts and calculators available online.
You then adjust down your energy intake whether it be from food or exercise at a rate of 7000 calories per kilogram of weight loss.
As your body weight decreases you recalculate your intake requirement and adjust your activity and food intake again. The lower your bodyweight gets the harder it gets because your intake starts to target a low base. Fat burning becomes more difficult and energy intake goes lower still to keep losing

Yes diet is more important as most people get exercise with just everyday life, but working behind a desk all day I need to get out and do some, plus it helps your mental state. I noticed a huge difference in my shoulders etc from swimming plus its nice knowing your fit enough to keep up with the young ones

I'm going away soon..yes yes hilarious replies...but I plan on getting some serious exercise done in this time to reignite my old love of flexibility and clear thinking, lots of sand work on the beach and tons of swimming in the ocean and body surfing...it's no fun keeping an exercise routine down in the city, it's harder than you think. So to the coast we go for some fresh air and health...
when at my peak ( appprox 70kg) which was several years ago now, my breakfast was a black coffee and one slice of multigrain toast with vegemite, the only other meal I would eat for the day would be a serving of crumbed or grilled fish on top of white jasmine rice and a handful of steamed veg like snow peas or carrot. I ate like this for years and was incredibly well and healthy, but I was combining it with running 5klm everyday and doing yoga 3 times a week in the evening. Never been a drinker but have smoked in between bouts of healthiness, but now non smoker and non drinker, and one or two coffees a day max.

This is what I did the time I most successfully lost weight. Don't ask me why I haven't done it on other occasions too, because I don't know.
For a bloke, stick to 1500 calories a day. You'll probably have a blowout once a week, but don't worry about that. Should easily lose 2lbs a week, more in the first couple of weeks, but that is usually glycogen and water, or sumfink like that.
Buy a calorie counter book, and write down how many calories you are consuming. I drink quite a lot of tea, so I'd usually enter a pint of milk at the start of the day. (From memory a pint of skimmed is 180 calories, semi-skimmed 280, normal 380, or sumfink like that. Just saying that as a for instance.) Buy a pair of kitchen scales too, if you don't have one, for weighing foods.

As Browndog says it gets tougher the more you lose, that's what I'm finding now, so a blowout over Xmas probably wasn't such a bad thing, I have heard that blowouts can help kick off weight loss again..

Once the weight loss slows down, start exercising more. You'll have to exercise more eventually anyway when you've reached a "stable" or target weight or else it will come back on.

I would go for a 1 hour morning walk first thing in the morning. Then monitor your calories and start calculating everything. Make sure you have a calorie deficit of 500 based on your age and current weight. Drink plenty of water to ensure you aren't carrying any "water weight". Water also supresses your appetite. Cut down on sugars and if you have them make sure its in the morning. Cut out alcohol and if you have sodas make sure its diet variety.
If you follow that method you should be dropping 2kgs a week at a minimum.

generally this is sound advice...however diet drinks lure people into drinking more...and there ARE calories in them...
my husband was very heavy until I had him stop drinking diet coke, replacing it with water in Summer and tea in Winter...also put a ban on those dreaded potato crisps, which are addictive and very fattening ...
I cut his sugar and starch to minimal levels, stepped up water and tea (a natural diuretic) ..then we would go and play golf for four hours in 30 degree weather...pulling buggies...stripped the pounds off...he lost twenty kilos doing it...(then I got pregnant and HE ate for two..put it all back on.. )
my philosophy has always been: if you cheat and eat, you move the feet...in other words, earn the right to have an indulgence by extra exercise...any exercise...
swimming won't actually cause you to lose weight...(it actually triggers hunger and because you are not building body temperature in cold water, it doesn't burn a lot of calories)...but swimming is a great aerobic exercise, arm-muscle toner and mental refresher...so the more you do, the better you feel...
the question always is: do you need all that extra food or are your taste buds overriding common sense...?

Agree. I went from eating garbage and getting to 110kg (not obese as I'm 6'4 but well beyond what I would like to be) to eating regular healthy meals and the weight just fell off. Healthy diet to lose weight, exercise to tone up.

Way back in the 70's we four flatmates (1 girl, 3 blokes but no fraternisation thank you) always shopped at the South Melbourne market. Well remember we could regularly purchase an entire side of lamb for $3.50 and actually go out back and choose it ourselves. And all the vegies for a week cost even less. Which meant we had money left over to spend at the Hydehurst Hotel at the end of the street. We once put a leg of lamb in the oven and went down the corner for a couple, and on our tardy return a thick black spiral of smoke was emanating from our digs: little left of the leg but charcoal and thankfully no serious damage apart from a blackened ceiling. But suspect I'm testing your patience with these reminiscences. In any event the market was a terrific place then and hope it still is.

I think people use age as an excuse, it is amazing what you can do with determination.
warm up, intense effort for 30 seconds, take it easy for 2 minutes, then repeat.
5 intense efforts should be enough, and intense effort is different for different levels, as long as those efforts are at least 90% of capacity

my philosophy has always been: if you cheat and eat, you move the feet...in other words, earn the right to have an indulgence by extra exercise...any exercise...
swimming won't actually cause you to lose weight...(it actually triggers hunger and because you are not building body temperature in cold water, it doesn't burn a lot of calories)...but swimming is a great aerobic exercise, arm-muscle toner and mental refresher...so the more you do, the better you feel...
the question always is: do you need all that extra food or are your taste buds overriding common sense...?

So are you claiming diet coke has >10 calories?
Are you from the school which asserts that celery has negative calories?

You can peel alternate strips around the outside, so that it then looks fancy when you subsequently slice it.

Folks a sure way to lose some flab but much, much more importantly., feel so much better. Is to rid your diet of any wheat and soy products. They are poison. No bread unless it is spelt based. No vegetable oils of any nature. Check your labels out before you buy. If you see vegetable oil. Soy or wheat mentioned , put it back. They are in so many products. Its all for shelf life and mass production purposes. Go old fashioned butter, not blended. Eggs? Help yourself.... Shop at local markets . Give the old supermarkets the old heave ho. Feel better and live longer. Add krill oil and vitamin d to your daily intake. As much fresh fruit and veg as you want. Source fresh red meat where you know it's history... As in no feed lot , corn fed full od antibiotic sick steers. I grow my own. Apple cider vinegar in water and check out Vital Green. I can assure anyone that they will feel better immediately.. dont know if its already been mentioned in this thread but we have been venturing towards low carb and high fat diet. its getting plenty of attention world wide. Garry Fetke is the Tasmanian Doctor promoting it . i dont monitor exact weights as i dont really have a big weight issue with a job and a farm to work on but i have lost some weight without any additional exercise . this time of year is a bit of a bugger but i know as soon as i adjust back all will be well. he promotes cutting most sugar from your diet which is what he claims is the real reason for weight gain. Fructose being the issue.... Gary has a website for those who are interested.just google. now for my bacon and eggs..

That is very true re carbs but you want to enjoy the foods you eat as well, not many people can maintain that sort of eating style... couple of points below for those who exercise only.
For those who exercise in the afternoon the best time to have your 'carbs' would be after gym with dinner and/or before bed (eating lighter during the day)
Those who exercise in the morning can get away with some carbs in the morning right after their workout but I would generally follow the same steps above eating carbs for around dinner time then using that as fuel for your next morning workout.

Might not hurt me to get an obsession with a diet i am taking all this on board. have to work out exactly what i will and wont do . more exercise would definately help, but when there are so many aches and pains etc, its very difficult to get motivated. and when one prefers a big T bone to salmon and a lettuce leaf, its even worse 10 years ago i was size 12 and now i am size 18 and sometimes 20 , ladies clothes. i started to gain when my hip went bad , and by the time it was done, the weight was on and oh boy its hard to shift.

I still eat everything but I have a limit, like a wall which stops me from overdoing it.
Whereas in the past I would have 3 South Melb dim sims for a snack, I now limit myself to 1
In the past I would have had chips, 3 dim sims ,3 potato cakes for dinner, I now limit myself to 1 grilled fish, 1 dim, 1 potato cake
I rarely eat a really big meal and restrict calories to 600 twice a week.
So I still enjoy the unhealthy but tasty food I always have but I have inbuilt limits these days

I've never heard of a Paleo diet but the concept sounds very similar to the Catalyst Program "Gut Reaction". The idea is that with modern use of antibiotics and a modern processed diet we have dramatically changed the natural gut microbes that are good for us and allowed the proliferation of bad ones .
A totally new area of biology that science seems to have little understanding of .
We have a pony at home that has never had antibiotics in its life and when we have a horse sick with diarrhea we use the manure from the pony into the diet of the sick horse . You often see foals who have an upset gut search out the fresh manure of their mums to eat . I believe its all about rebalancing the gut bacteria . Its one reason we should never use oral antibiotics as injectable is the way to go .

No. Atkins re-incorporates carbs after the Induction phase until you are almost the same as the CSIRO Diet by maintenance phase
Paleo, you have hardly any carbs going forward and no starch or sugar carbs at all
The only carbs you have is from some fruit, if you feel you need it and from non starch vegetables
You eat nothing white at all

Great advice Lulu . fresh all is good. avoid the polyunsatured oils and transfats. also try to keep sugar to an absolute minimum. its well worth a try. fresh food is what our grandparents ate and generally the Australian population did not have the obesity problem it has now. i cannot wait for the day that the fast food outlets have to answer as the cigarette companies do now.

sort of on topic..
i think gyms + personal trainers etc are a load of cr*p.
there's basically nothing you can't do at home with a pair of dumbells + exercises
using your own body weight. Those fancy hi tech machines in the gym might make it a tiny %
more effective..but that's about it..+ personal trainers well there so much free info on the net these days..re:excerises, plans, techniques etc - so why would you want to pay someone
for info you can get for free..?
i think male gymnasts have the best physique..in the sense of how i'd like to look
..+ they mostly use their own body weight.

When personal trainers first came on the scene i used to think they were a joke. I have changed my mind, many people do not have the willpower or any idea how to train, personal trainers are great for motivating them. The trouble is that many people do not adhere to their dietary and lifestyle advice so the workouts they do are not effective.
I also used to think gyms were not necessary as I did all my training on the pavement and track. I was wrong about this too, gyms have a great variety of weights, machines, aerobic devices which help to keep you motivated and isolate and exercise different parts of the body.
For instance my hamstring problems have been fixed, touch wood, by using the leg curl machine every day and there are many examples of specific problems being helped

Ecair please......gyms a load of crap??? Nothing you cant do at home??? I mean this in a nice way, but thats a rather ignorant comment. There are many exercises that cant be done with dumbbells. Personal trainers are critical for beginners learning their way at the gym, mainly to learn how to do the exercises correctly and to get a program that suits. Incorrect form can result in injury and you wont get the correct benefit from the exercise. Not to mention in days of horrible weather, you have the option of using extremely expensive treadmills and incline machines to run. Gyms should be free or at least subsidised. Regular weight use has so many benefits using all your muscle groups that home dumbbells cant do.
