Very very talented horse.

Beaten 5 lengths in a BM64 at Newcastle just now.

He showed that LUCK rather than TALENT win the majority of races on even our better race courses.

We get to see this Camelot stallion go around in the Randwick Mayors Cup over 2400m today.

I probably would have expected more generous odds that 7/1 considering he just came out of a Class 1 at Wyong.

Djebel, your thoughts on him today ?

Sorry LB, I was away that weekend but my thoughts where he was a moral. Ran a tip top race but unfortunately not quite good enough.

Should win plenty of races.

He’s lining up again in the 2400m BM78 at Rosehill today.

I was definately going to back him at his next start, but he has drawn awkwardly in Barrier 13 & has a sub-standard jockey in Brenton Avdulla aboard.

Perhaps the horse is good enough to overcome these negatives but I’m not as confident as I thought I’d be today.

Thanks to djebel spotting this stallion early in the piece, I’ve had some nice collects at each of his last 3 starts.

Not sure about Caulfield & Melb Cups. But the Newcastle Cup next month looks perfect race to test him in black type level. If he passes that test, then the Metrop Hcp could be the G1 to have a go at.

This exciting young stayer has scraped into the Newcastle Cup field on Friday - in on the limit weight.

Not sure how he goes in Heavy conditions? But Gayatri franked the form on Sat.

Will be a really good test for him against some well performed Group performers (including another 8 horses also owned by Aust Bloodstock).   They’ve really stacked the race, hopefully OC is the pick of them.

Should handle conditions.

Is poorly weighted in relation to the "ratings".

Lees could have as many as seven starters so wouldn't be in a hurry to back just one of them at $3.

Had expected to see him in the Metrop this weekend.

But he’s listed as ‘Spelling’ on Racing Aust website.

He’s done a terrific job in his first Aussie campaign though. Look forward to him being even better in the autumn.

Same. I was hoping he was heading there. Would have been hard to beat.

Notice a 2.5% share in this guy just sold on Inglis Digital for $8,000.

So that values the entire horse at $320,000.

Hope he can get back on track autumn 2021.

Forgotten stayer on comeback trail

It’s been a long road back, but finally trainer Kris Lees can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel with forgotten galloper Our Candidate.

In the spring of 2019, the imported stayer signalled he was a horse of the future when ending his first Australian campaign with a third placing in the Group 3 Newcastle Cup.

He resumed in January 2020 and finished third behind his future star stablemate Mugatoo, but things turned sour for Our Candidate.

Post-race he was found to have suffered a tendon injury in the run.

“You look back at the result of that race now and it makes you feel even worse when you see what Mugatoo went on to achieve,” Lees said.

“We did the full rehab, produced him 12 months to the day in the same race and the bloody thing flared up so we stopped and did another full rehab.”

On Wednesday Our Candidate stepped out for the first time publicly since the setback and was given an easy time in a 1000m trial at Newcastle.

“It’s been a long road but gee it was good to see him come through the trial,” Lees said.

“I was only talking about him to Jamie Lovett (Australian Bloodstock) after the trial. Racing has its ups and downs but you look back and it’s hard not to think what if.

“He went from a provincial class two to a Group 3 in his first prep then came back a better horse in his next campaign but it all went pear shaped.

“We’ll give him another trial and then probably look for a race over 1600m for him.

“So far so good.”

Lees said there are no targets locked in for Our Candidate, “it’s more a case of being guided by the horse” with many options spread throughout much of the year.

“Everyone that’s been riding him says he feels great under saddle so hopefully his problems are behind him and he can get back to something like the horse that he was,” Lees said.

“We’ll be guided by him but there are so many options for a horse like this these days.

“If he holds up then he’ll be up and going in the early part of the autumn and there’s a few suitable races over ground.

“We’ll just see how things play out.”

Noticed this fellow nominated for a 1600m race on Saturday.

He’s talented, so fingers crossed he can hold together for a prep into the late summer & early autumn.

Snuck up to Doomben for a 2000m race today.

His last run at a mile was pretty encouraging that he’s in good order, so no reason why he can’t get back to the winners circle today.
