SC add Star Kingdom into the mix.  Like with Danehill/Danzig finding all the Bletchingly blood in Australia.  Mr Prospector worked lovely with the Noholme line in USA and put the three together is usually fun.  Lonhro also likes more Mr Prospector and he has Sir Tristram and all that lovely Selene blood so maybe its just all going back to her.  Remember Mr Prospector comes down from Sickle (Selene), Star Kingdom from Hyperion (Selene) while Northern Dancer carries both.  Just saying she is a pretty good place to start!

This Saturday's renewal of the G1 Belmont Derby will be held at Aqueduct Racetrack due to the ongoing construction of the new Belmont Park Racetrack. The distance has been decreased to 1 3/16 miles (turf) from 1 1/4 miles. Unfortunately, the event only attracted 5 entries. The first three entries were automatic entries as they were placed 1-2-3 in the GII Pennine Ridge Stakes. Trikari won the G2 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day but was disappointing in the G3 Penn Mile Stakes. Endlessly was brilliant in the G3 Jeff Ruby on the polytrack at Turfway Park and was VG on the turf as a 2YO! Will see in the Charlie Appleby continues his dominance of these turf races with Legend of Time who won in UAE over the winter and finished like a train when he won the Pennine Ridge Stakes.

1     Legend of Time (GB) Sea The Stars (IRE) - Kissable (IRE) by Danehill Dancer (IRE)
2     White Palomino (KY) Kitten's Joy - Wolf Gourmet by Flatter
3     Royal Majesty (GB)     Frankel (GB) - Crown Queen by Smart Strike

Great finish in the G1 Travers as Fierceness outlasted the game filly Thorpedo Anna who was desparately trying to win by a head with Sierra Leone 3rd and Dornoch a good way back in 4th.

Fierceness will now probably win the 3YO division after this win. There are some more G1 3YO events but it would be hard to see who will take the leadership after this performance.

I realise that the longer distances are not as popular over in USA but Next (6g Not This Time x Bahia Beach, by Awesome Again) must be very good. Seven straight wins, nearly all by huge margins.

... and he's a grey!

I also like his sire, Not This Time.

I know this time of the year the VRC Spring Carnival is the best race meeting in OZ, no matter how many debates over many beers will be taken.

However, as usual this time of the year the Breeders' Cup in the Northern Hemisphere attracts the best of the best, and this year is no different.

In fact, this edition is probably the time when the Japanese contingent will make their biggest impression, with 18 horses showing up. That's massive! Yes, Coolmore and Aiden O'Brien will be here too but this is the year that the biggest event, the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic will be targetted. Japan's entries as very formidable! They start with Ushba Tesoro - 2nd in the G1 Dubai World Cup, Derma Sotogate who was 2nd last year in the BC Classic and the brilliant Forever Young whose only defeat was in this year's G1 Kentucky Derby finishing a very close 3rd. Phew!!!!

Add to this years Classic, Justify's special son City Of Troy and you get the feeling that the US are underdogs. Don't get me wrong but if an American based horse wins this year's Classic there will be reason to brag!

I'll give my pick later this week when the final fields have been declared, since currently there are several cross entries as there are some choices for connections to make given how tough some of these events are come up.

Breeders' Cup Friday is all for the juveniles:

Race 6, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, 5 furlongs, turf

Ecoro Sieg comes from Japan with a 2-for-2 record, winning by open lengths in a pair of six-furlong races. Group 3 winner Big Mojo, trained by England-based Mick Appleby, is part of a deep field for this race. He finished second by just a neck last month in a five-furlong, Group 2 race at Doncaster. He lost to Aesterius, who also won a Group 3 stakes Sept. 1 at ParisLongchamp. US was well represented by Out On Bail. Unfortunately he will scratch due to a chip found in his knee. Others with a chance are Governor Sam and Pali Kitten who was an emergency entrant and now gets a start.

Race 7, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, 1 1/16 miles

Scottish Lassie was a maiden-breaking, nine-length winner Oct. 5 in the one-mile G1 Frizette at Aqueduct. Godolphin homebred Immersive, a daughter of Nyquist who is trained by Brad Cox, is 3-for-3 with G1 victories already in the Spinaway and Alcibiades. American Bikini, an American Pharoah filly, comes from Japan with wins in maiden and handicap races and stretches past seven furlongs for the first time. Baffert trained Non Compliant scratched leaving him with one entrant, Nooni who was second to Non Compliant in the G2 Oak Leaf at Santa Anita.

Race 8, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, 1 mile, turf

Coolmore's Lake Victoria for trainer Aidan O’Brien will be a hot favorite. The Frankel filly had two Group 1 victories 13 days apart last month, finishing first by 1 1/4 lengths in the seven-furlong Moyglare Stud at the Curragh and then by three lengths in the six-furlong Cheveley Park at Newmarket. This will be her first time going longer than seven furlongs. Best chance for the US-based entrants are Thought Process, winner of the G3 Surfer Girl and May Day Ready who won at Keeneland in the G2 Jessamine. She'll have Frankie Dettori driving her once again!
Italic
Race 9, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, 1 1/16 miles (Road to Kentucky Derby event)

Godolphin homebred East Avenue has raced twice and been to the winner’s circle twice. The Medaglia d’Oro colt trained by Brendan Walsh finished first by eight lengths in his Ellis Park debut and then won by 5 1/4 lengths going two turns in the 1 1/16-mile G1 Breeders’ Futurity this month at Keeneland. Chancer McPatrick comes into the race with a 3-for-3 record for trainer Chad Brown. After breaking his maiden at Saratoga, the McKinzie colt won the G1 Hopeful by a half-length and the G1 Champagne by 2 3/4 on Oct. 5. This race will be his first time going two turns. Two others have won Road to Kentucky Derby events include Baffert-trained Citizen Bull and Ohio bred Jonathan's Way, while Getaway Car and Ferocious came 2nd. An excellent field for this year's renewal - one which will most probably lead to the Champion Juvenile in the US for 2024.

Race 10, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, 1 mile, turf

Based in England, New Century already has a North America victory to his credit. The Andrew Balding-trained Kameko colt won the G1 Summer Stakes going one mile last month at Woodbine. Aomori City, trained in England by Charlie Appleby, is a Grade 2-winning Oasis Dream colt who finished fourth last out in the G1 Vincent O’Brien National at the Curragh. Coolmore’s Henri Matisse was a close second in that race before trying the soft turf at ParisLongchamp only to finish fifth in the G1 Prix Lagardère. Both Aomori City and Henri Matisse will stretch to a mile for the first time. Best of the US chances are Zulu Kingdom winner of the G2 Pilgrim at Aqueduct, Iron Mal Cal winner of the G3 Zuma Beach and Mentee winner of the 6f G3 Futurity.

Thanks Brudder.

Is Zulu Kingdom running in the 8 1/2 furlongs juvenile?  Only ask because he has an Australian connection ie courtesy of Furious: "Exceed and Excel, Dark Star, Noholme, Archray, Foul Shot and Grand Lady".

Zulu Kingdom is running in the Juvenile Turf which is 1 mile.

Also note in the same event:

Rachel King Will Become First Australian-Based Jockey To Ride At Breeders' Cup
She'll partner Japan's entrant Satono Carnaval, trained by Noriyuki Hori, in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

I think Rachel is a POM but we wont take that away from her !!!!

Breeders' Cup Saturday Part 1

Race 4, Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, 7 furlongs, dirt

Ways and Means, a 3-year-old Practical Joke filly owned by Seth Klarman, has won her last three races for trainer Chad Brown. The last two victories came in the seven-furlong  G1 Test Stakes at Saratoga and against older rivals in the 6 1/2-furlong G2 Gallant Bloom at Aqueduct. Trainer Steve Asmussen has had Society, a Peter Blum homebred, training up to this race from a win in the seven-furlong G1 Ballerina Handicap during the summer at Saratoga. The 5-year-old Gun Runner mare finished a troubled fourth in last year’s Filly & Mare Sprint. Do not write off Vahva, another Gun Runner mare who was 3rd in that same race and also Zeitios winner of the G2 Thoroughbred Club of America at Keeneland.

Race 5, Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, 5 furlongs, turf

Cogburn brings championship credentials to Del Mar, having won all his starts this year in the G1 Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs, the G1 Jaipur at Saratoga and the G2 Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs. The 5-year-old Not This Time horse is 7: 6-0-0 on turf and undefeated in five starts going shorter than six furlongs. Bradsell, a 4-year-old from Europe, got a late start this year but is 4: 3-1-0, all at five furlongs. The wins included the G1 Nunthorpe and G1 Flying Five. The loss came last month in the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye, his only time trying very-soft turf. Other invaders worth looking at are 3YO Big Evs  who last year won the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint at Santa Anita and the G2 King George Stakes at Goodwood this year. Irish-bred Believing has been consistent with good performances in Group events ans is not without a chance. Motorious is the best chance for a local Californian-based runner to shine and South African-bred Isivunguvungu won at his first start in the US and could be in the mix at the finish.

Race 10, Breeders’ Cup Sprint, 6 furlongs, dirt

A five-length score for trainer Brad Cox in the G2 Phoenix Stakes this month at Keeneland gave 4-year-old gelding Federal Judge his second win in as many tries at six furlongs. Mullikin will have spent 10 weeks training up to the Sprint after winning the G1 Forego by 5 3/4 lengths at Saratoga for trainer Rodolphe Brisset, bringing his winning streak to four. Straight No Chaser won the G2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship while Raging Torrent won the G2 Pat O'Brien Stakes at the host track. Japan is well represented in this race with Don Frankie and Remake who won the G3 Korea Sprint in Seoul.

Race 12, Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, 1 mile

This event has attracted one of the best renditions of this race!
With three-time Grade 1 winner National Treasure injured and out of the picture, 3-year-old Domestic Product inherited the favorite’s role. Since his 13th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, the Practical Joke colt finished second in the little Pegasus at Monmouth Park before winning both the G2 Dwyer Stakes and the G1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial last out on Aug. 24 Saratoga. Skippylongstocking has fashioned three graded-stakes victories this year before finishing second in a field of four last month in the G2 Woodward. Other high profile runners include Saudi Crown, 3rd in the G1 Saudi Cup, G1 Preakness winner Sieze The Grey and Bob Baffert-trained Muth who has won 3-out-4 this year including the G1 Arkansas Derby.

Breeders' Cup Saturday Part 2

Race 6, Breeders’ Cup Distaff, 1 1/8 miles dirt

This race lost a lot of starch when reigning division champion Idiomatic, who won this race last year at Santa Anita, was retired with a minor but poorly timed knee injury. Thorpedo Anna, a lock to be the champion 3-year-old filly, will be the heavy favorite. She is 6: 5-1-0 this year including Grade 1 wins in the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn, Coaching Club American Oaks and Cotillion. She also had a thrilling, second-place finish to Fierceness when she faced seven colts in the G1 Travers Stakes.
So who else has an inkling of a chance? Curlin's daughter Raging Sea won the G2 Beldame at Aqueduct and Sugar Fish won the G2 Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita. However, I think the most dangerous opponent is the Japanese starter Awesome Result. This daughter of Justify is undefeated in seven starts and could seriously cause an upset.

Race 7, Breeders’ Cup Turf, 1 1/2 miles, turf

Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby brings 2022 winner Rebel’s Romance back to this race on the strength of a 5: 4-0-1 season. The 6-year-old Dubawi gelding has won four Group 1 stakes in as many nations including the Dubai Sheema Classic in the Middle East, the Champions and Chater Cup in Hong Kong, the King George in England and the Preis von Europa in Germany.

The challegers come from all over the world. Dettori will partner with the Gosdens on Emily Upjohn, Coolmore has Luxembourg and the mare Wingspan. Let's not leave out French-bred Jatarebe who won at Royal Ascot and recently at Longchamp in the G2 Prix Dollar. Japan is represented by Shahryar who was 2nd in the Dubai Sheema Classic.  Of the US-based entrants Far Bridge tuned up nicely at Aqueduct winning the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, Grand Sonata won the G2 Kentucky Turf Cup and Cabo Spirit won the G2 John Henry Turf Championship - but this field is elite!

Race 9, Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, 1 3/8 miles, turf

This will be the fourth time that 7-year-old War Like Goddess has tried to win a Breeders’ Cup. She was favored when she finished third in the 2021 Filly & Mare Turf at Del Mar. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott tried her the last two years in the Turf, and the mare who has earned $2,975,184 came in third in 2022 and seventh in 2023. She comes in off second-place results in the G2 Flower Bowl and G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic. There will several challengers that include Cinderella's Dream, winner of the G2 Saratoga Oaks, Hang The Moon, G2 Rodeo Drive Stakes winner.  Coolmore has G1 Yorkshire Oaks winner Content entered. Argentine-bred Didia and Canadian-bred Moira also have good form to take this prize.

Race 8, Breeders’ Cup Classic, 1 1/4 miles

Three-year-olds are expected to dominate the betting and perhaps the outcome of America’s richest race. Ireland-based City Of Troy will be backed heavily even though he never has raced on dirt. The Justify colt owned by Coolmore and trained by Aidan O’Brien has Group 1 victories this year in the Epsom Derby, Eclipse and International stakes. The mercurial Fierceness, who won last year’s Juvenile, has Grade 1 wins in the Florida Derby and Travers but also fizzed out to 15th place in the Kentucky Derby. Forever Young comes from Japan with a 7: 6-0-1 record with the lone loss being by two noses in the Kentucky Derby.

Race 11, Breeders’ Cup Mile, 1 mile, turf

Notable Speech, a Godolphin homebred trained by Appleby, is a 3-year-old Dubawi colt who won the England G1 2,000 Guineas and G1 Sussex but who lost on soft ground last out in the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp. Top U.S. hope Carl Spackler, a 4-year-old Lope De Vega colt trained by Brown for e5 Racing, brings in a three-racing winning streak. He followed his victory in the G3 Kelso with wins in the G1 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga and in the G1 Turf Mile at Keeneland.

The final events of the Road to the Kentucky Derby Initial Prep Phase have been completed over the weekend. In two weeks the Lecomte Stakes at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans doubles the points allotment for qualification.

So what can we gather from the Initial Prep Phase which included the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
The same faces will be making a mark as we go forward.

Bob Baffert, having apologized to Churchill Downs for his misdemeanors will be present. He has three of the top ten in the qualification standings - Citizen Bull, Gaming and Getaway Car. But his most impressive one in the barn won this weekend in the G2 San Vicente Stakes over 7 furlongs at Santa Anita Park. Named after his assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes, Barnes the horse ($3.2 million yearling purchase) is really one to watch in the spring. I assume that his next start will be in the G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Feb. 1, but I can't be sure because he might of scared all his opposition away.

Godolphin have upped their ante for the big prize and have been well represented in this early phase.
They had 4 winners of the qualification events of which two were Grade 1. East Avenue, Poster, Journalism and Sovereignty. All nice types who will be prominent in the spring.

51 horses earned qualification points in the initial phase in the USA section of the qualification process in the 13 events held thus far.

I don't follow US racing but the following is strange to me.  Last weekend the Pegasus turf ($3 mill) and dirt ($1 mill) races were run over 9f.

White Abarrio won the dirt by 6L in 1.48.05 (70 ft run up - record 1.46.83) while the turf race on the inside track was run in 1.44.45 (run up 35 ft - a near record time) with the first 10 finishing within 6 lengths of each other.

I am guessing White Abarrio will be a fav in the Saudi world Cup.  There was no outstanding horse in the turf race looking at the form.

I understand only about 25% of group races are run on turf. - i vaguely remember reading something like that quite a while ago.

Are dirt tracks now prepared for slow times or is the quality of dirt racing inferior.

Any thoughts ?

Bit of trivia for you.

All 21 horses racing in this year's Kentucky Derby are reportedly descendants of the famed racehorse Secretariat, according to The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky.

This year marks 52 years since Secretariat won the Triple Crown in record times that still stand today. Now, the horse's legacy will be honored, no matter which horse wins.

animals before people.

The legendary D Wayne Lucas is extremely unwell and officially retired from training just a couple of days ago.

Pity they couldn't find a better preformed galloper he'd trained to go around.
