Extraordinary and unprecedented stipulations have been imposed on Bob Baffert to allow the controversial Hall Of Fame trainer to compete at next month’s Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar.

Horses trained by Baffert, a serial positive swab offender embroiled in a legal battle for Medina Spirit to retain the Kentucky Derby, will be subjected to unique and rigorous drug testing requirements before being allowed to compete in the Breeders’ Cup.

And Baffert will have to cover the cost. The requirements have been imposed by the authority that runs the Breeders’ Cup.

Yep they are keeping an eye on Bobby B.

The think is Medina Spirit bolted in by 5 lengths in the G! Awesome Again Stakes and is being set for the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2.5 weeks.

Also not that for qualification to the 2021 Kentucky Derby, trainers or owners suspended by Churchill Downs Inc., their horses do not get qualification points towards the KDerby.

Bob Baffert trained Corniche won the G1 American Pharoah Stakes and is one of the favorite for the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. So it will be interesting going forward how the legal jostling goes as we get closer to the Triple Crown, but owners might get a bit apprehensive if their star horse misses the KDerby because they are associated with Bobby B.

Breeders' Cup field have been set for this coming Friday and Saturday. 14 events. Clash of US vs European, Japanese and South Americans.

Without a doubt the Classic this year is beauty!!! The 3YOs Essential Quality, Medina Spirit and Hot Rod Charlie class with speedster Knicks Go, Max Player and Art Collector. Small field of 9 but oooooooze in class!

The Turf has 14 starters and 4 also eligibles (emergencies who missed the cut G1 Belmont Derby winner Bolshoi Ballet (IRE) and multiple G1 winner and 3rd last year in this race at Keeneland Channel Maker) and it loaded with crème de la crème (of course no Verry Ellegant). Many look to Tarnawa (IRE) to repeat make amends for her defeats in the Irish Champions Stakes and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. But this race is loaded with class Walton Street (GB), Teona (IRE), Gufo, Japan (GB), Rockemperor (IRE), Yibir (GB) and the US based lightly raced Domestic Spending (GB).

The other stars in this rendition:

Bob Baffert trained Gamine going for her second win in the Filly's and Mare sprint over 7f (dirt).

Triple G1 Mexican winner Letruska who has been outstanding all season and will lay claims for US Horse of the Year should she be victorious in the Distaff (1 1/8 miles).

In the Sprint over 6f, 3YO Jackie's Warrior has been untouchable and will start the overwhelming favorite.

In the Filly's and Mare Turf over 11 furlongs Love (IRE) who has been disappointing will clash with deep Impact's daughter Loves Only You (JPN) (Sha Tin HKG1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup) and Audarya (FR) who won this race last year at Keeneland at the shorter 1 3/16 miles distance and look out for the FR G1  Prix de l'Opera Longines winner Rougir (FR). US War Like Goddess is 6 out of 7 this career and will be  really tested here.

In the turf Mile Space Blues (IRE) winner of the G2 City of York Stakes and G1 Prix de la Foret will be the luke warm favourite over In Love (BRZ), Mother Earth (IRE), Mo Forza, Smooth Like Strait, Blowout (GB) and Pearls Galore (FR).

For the 2YOs I'll write up later!

Can someone please explain what happened in the BC Juvenile Turf?

A friend phoned me to say Modern Games was a late scratching but was allowed to start & "won" the race. However, Tiz The Bomb won the actual race. Why did Modern Games compete if he had already been scratched? I don't understand this at all.

It seems that Modern Games is actually the winner & gets the prizemoney but Tiz The Bomb is the winner for betting purposes. Crazy!

The scratching was a mistake but after it was done they couldn't reinstate him in the betting markets.

There may have been something sinister behind the scratching by an " unknown party " , it's happened here in oz.

So , apparently ?? Charlie Appleby had 2 runners of which one was scratched at the barriers , in America stablemates are bracketed on the tote , so if one is scratched the other comes out also , but the one in the clear can race for prize money , go figure ! Wink of course it won. Smile

Hello,
btw,the French bred Sisfahan (Isfahan-Kendalee by Kendargent, German Derby winner 2021), but runs in my home country will start in in the "Breeders Cup Turf", Grade 1, 1 1/2 miles.

Lets see, how he will run, after the surprise win of "Torquator Tasso" in the ARC. His Trainer Mr.Henk Grewe would be glad, if he ran a 5th or 6thplaced.

regards, Ticino

GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Corniche will undoubtedly capture 2YO honours in the US after his dominant win.

Here's an excerpt from Steve Haskin's analysis of the breeding this future champion.

Right now let’s look at Corniche’s amazing pedigree. To begin with, his sire, Quality Road set a new track record of 1:47 2/5 for 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream winning the Donn Handicap, eclipsing his own record of 1:47 3/5 set the year before in the Florida Derby. He also set a new track record of 1:13 3/5 for 6 ½ furlongs at Saratoga that still stands and ran a mile in 1:33 flat in the Metropolitan Handicap. Quality Road’s sire, Elusive Quality, set a new world record of 1:31 3/5 for the mile on the turf at Belmont Park in the Poker Handicap. Elusive Quality’s sire, Gone West, is by Mr. Prospector, who set a new track record of 1:07 3/5 for six furlongs at Gulfstream Park and a new track record of 1:08 3/5 at Monmouth Park. Gone West’s dam, Secrettame, is by Secretariat, and we don’t have to go into all the track, American, and world records Big Red set on dirt and grass. Mr. Propector’s sire, Raise A Native, set a new track record of :57 4/5 for five furlongs at Aqueduct, then equaled it, and a new track record of 1:02 3/5 for 5 ½ furlongs at Aqueduct. Quality Road’s third dam is by Bold Bidder, who ran a mile in 1:32 4/5 at Arlington Park, one-fifth of a second off Buckpasser’s world record.

On the female side, Corniche’s dam Wasted Tears set a new course record of 1:32 4/5 for a mile on the grass at Lone Star Park that still stands. Wasted Tears is by Najran, who equaled Dr. Fager’s coveted 35-year-old world record of 1:32 1/5 for a mile, winning the Westchester Handicap at Belmont Park. That record has not been equaled on dirt since. Wasted Tears’ dam is by Greinton, who set a new track record of 1:32 3/5 for a mile at Hollywood Park and a new track record of 1:58 2/5 for 1 ¼ miles at Hollywood Park. Wasted Tears’ second dam is by Beau’s Eagle, who set a new track record of 1:40 3/5 for 1 1/16 miles at Golden Gate. Wasted Tears’ third dam is by Raise A Cup, who set a new track of 1:03 for 5 ½ furlongs at Belmont Park. Also in Corniche’s female family is Conquistador Cielo, who set a new stakes record of 1:33 flat in the Met Mile.

So, in Corniche’s pedigree, you have horses who have run a mile in 1:31 3/5, 1:32 1/5, 1:32 3/5, 1:32 4/5 twice, and 1:33 flat twice. Now it is up to Corniche to show he can carry that speed a mile and a quarter. We just have to see what the future holds for him as he embarks on the Derby trail.

Hi Carioca.
All times in the US are a run up but the run up distance varies from track to track.

Have heard that if you superimposed a flying start over a standing one the latter would generally be about 7-8 lengths behind after travelling around 100m.  Which if true would equate to about 1.2 seconds.

Fwiw.

Overnight:

Swiss Skydiver, 2020 G1 Preakness Stakes winner was sold at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale in Lexington, Kentucky for US$4.7 million, the third-highest price of the sale to of course the Japanese - Katsumi Yoshida's  Northern Farm.

Now why race when you can make a bundle in the ring and not the track?????

Astute horseman Kenny McPeek bought Swiss Skydiver for only $35,000 from the Select Sales consignment at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Campaigned in the silks of Peter Callahan, Swiss Skydiver racked up over US$2.2 million on the track...

Del Mar  Tomorrow  Bob Hope Stakes

R8-1-Messier

Messier broke his maiden by six lengths last month and the margin could have been double (triple?) that amount had F. Prat let him run. The Empire Maker colt has since breezed flawlessly while preparing for today's Bob Hope S.-G3 while giving every indication that the longer they go, the better he will be. Seven furlongs is the logical steppingstone to his year-end goal of the Los Alamitos Futurity-G2 next month.

Today's meeting at Churchill Downs is unique.

All 12 events are 2YO races including 2 Graded events which at qualification events for next year's Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.

One event is also over 1 1/8 miles. Unfortunately no turf race due to the complete reseeding of the turf track at Churchill downs which started this late summer.

New Year's Day - Is Happy Birthday to all Northern Hemisphere horses!

Its also about 4 months before the Kentucky Derby.

We have three qualification races on the card on New Year's Day.

G3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita over 1 mile... 5 runners with DQ Baffert have 2 of them.
Listed Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park over 1 mile - 14 runners with $250,000 up for grabs
Listed Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct, NY over 1 mile - 8 runners for $150,000

Still early times and January winners usually have little impact on the Big Day, but its nice to start following a little but closer!

Horse racing taking a back seat to the NFL and the weather this long weekend in the US but I do have to report a result that's notable for those back home...

At Aqueduct today (before the winter storm is supposing to hit sometime tonight) , Battle Bling (Vancouver (AUS) — Soleil Rouge, by E Dubai) won the Black Type Ladies Stakes (Of $97,000) by a neck. Battle Bling (10/3), earning her first stakes score in the Ladies, ran the nine furlongs on a fast main track in 1:57.11.

Bred in Kentucky by Royal Oak Farm and E. Kiely, Battle Bling is the first stakes winner produced from the winning E Dubai mare Soleil Rouge, who is the dam of four winners from four foals to race.

Battle Bling improved her overall record to 3-4-1 from 13 starts and has earnings of US$203,867.
