Godolphin's favourite Essential Quality (11/8 fav.) proved too strong for Hot Rod Charlie in the run to the line with Preakness winner Rombauer a distant third. Jockey Luis Saez first Triple Crown event victory as well as trainer Brad Cox. But Brad Cox may also get the honours for Mandaloun in the Kentucky Derby if Medina Spirit is DQ'ed.

Well run race on a a tiring dirt track.

Essential Quality would have to be the best 3yo colt in USA this year. He probably should have won the Kentucky Derby considering the extra ground he covered.

Here are his damline details:-

Oleksandra (AUS) was scratched from the G1 Jaipur Stakes due to the wet state of track but she returned with a vengeance to win the G3 Poker Stakes at 17/1 in her last start of her career in a time of 1:32.11 for the 1 mile event.

She is in foal to sire Into Mischief. Not a bad career for the OZ bred mare and it will be interesting to see her babies!!!

Both Bolshoi Ballet and Santa Barbara won today at Belmont Park. Coolmore folks should be real happy with the double!

Fitting that Bolshoi Ballet (Galileo (IRE) — Alta Anna (FR), by Anabaa) added another G1 for his dad!

Very nice and the has been a work in progress with this mare. Arrived here in the US in late 2018 and will be knocking on the door for a Graded win.

For @Ticino

German bred mare Dalika (GER) broke through here in a graded win in the G3 Robert G. Dick Memorial Stakes at Delaware Park over the weekend. It was on the cards with a purrfect sport on the soft turf after the rains from TS Elsa which passed over this area on early Friday morning!

Brudder I'm behind the news.

From where I sit it appears the winner of the Derby Medina Spirit has now returned two positives, however his sire Protonico is still listed as leading the 2nd season sires list courtesy of Medina Spirit's success.

Hasn't the winner been disqualified, and if not why not?  Cheers in advance.

Hi SC!

From an article today:

In the only other similar case, when 1968 Derby first-place finisher Dancer's Image was disqualified over a post-race drug test, that decision was handed down three days after the race. Crawford acknowledged that the lawsuits dragged on for another four years, but adds that the lawsuits are “inevitable.”

So we're in legal proceedings and they will take a long time.

As we all know the New York Racing Association barred Medina Spirit's trainer Bob Baffert to enter horses in the state. Now a NY Federal Judge nullified the suspension of horse trainer Bob Baffert, finding that the NYRA acted unconstitutionally by failing to let him adequately respond to claims made against him after Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit failed a post race drug test.

Brooklyn Judge Carol Bagley Amon said she concluded that Baffert had established a likelihood he will prove the suspension violated the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Getting messy all the time!

Just to go a bit positive.

Today one of the best meetings in the US starts at Saratoga!!! 40 days of racing and a package of 76 stakes worth US$21.5 million.

On Friday, Del Mar opens their summer meeting on the West Coast. That meeting is also very special.

At this rate I'll be doing more results for overseas stakes than Australia this week with Macau and Singapore still chances for more stakes wins for either Aussie bred and by Australian breed sire.

Nice card today at Saratoga which should be worth noting and maybe watching Down Under if you get up early enough.

G1 Belmont Stakes winner Essential Quality is opening at 1/2on against 5 other entrants in the G2 Jim Dandy Stakes over 1 1/8 miles. Saratoga is the place where major Upsets happen. (Man o' War was beaten by Upset for his only loss many moons ago).

G2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt sprint over 6 furlongs is real beauty IMO. 8YO Whitmore and 6YO Firenze Fire have been tough in their careers, but up and coming Mischevious Alex has shown this season tha t hes ready to challenge the best. Last start 3rd in the G1 Metropolitan at Belmont over mile and a win in the G1 7 furlong Carter at Aqueduct is really good form for this.

G2 Bowling Green Stakes over 1 3/8 miles on the turf has three entrants sired by 2007 G1 Breeders' Cup Turf winner English Channel (stands at Calumet Farm today). Maybe they can run the trifecta?

Quick rundown of the big races this weekend:

34/1 Lexitonian (Speightstown  – Riviera Romper by Tapit) shocked all as he fought back in the straight to win the G2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt.

2/5on Essential Quality (Tapit  – Delightful Quality by Elusive Quality) Had a real tuff fight in the straight with Keepmeinmind to capture the G2 Jim Dandy. Headed for the Travers in 4 weeks time.

The G2 Bowling Green was won by NY Bred Cross Border (English Channel — Empress Josephine, by Empire Maker) for the second time. G1 Sword Dancer next time at the Spa.

The G1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar was won by 3YO Dr. Schivel (Violence - Lil Nugget by Mining for Money)

G2 Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar was won by Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil coming off a 3rd place on the East Coast in the Ogden Phipps at Belmont Park.

Most impressive winner was Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music — Unicorn Girl, by A. P. Five Hundred) in the G2 Amsterdam (for 3YOs) on Sunday at Saratoga by 7 1/4 lengths on the slop.

This week at Spa 2 big US$1 million 3YO Turf races (Saratoga Derby and Saratoga Oaks) which I assume will has some European entrants - Bolshoi Ballet etc.

Saratoga this weekend again has some interesting races.

In particular the newly upgraded G1 Saratoga Derby has a juicy US$1 million stake to attract some fine 3YOs. As I mentioned Bolshoi Ballet (IRE) is back to the US for the second leg of the NYRA turf Tiara after winning the Belmont Derby. The other Europeans here are Cadillac (IRE), 4th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last year, Soldier Rising (GB) (Frankel - Sahrawi by Pivotal) 2nd last start in May at Chantilly. Joseph O'Brien trained State of Rest (IRE) who was third last start in a stakes race at The Curragh. Also Godolphin owned Secret Protector bred in Kentucky who was last start 3rd in the G3 Hampton Court at Royal Ascot.

So those that came are not the super best but its often the case that they don't have to be to come to the US and win.

The G3 Saratoga Oaks on Sunday also has a nice field with four Irish bred fillies.
Three have come over the Atlantic. Creative Flair (IRE), a Dubawi filly won at Newbury was barely beaten by a head as the favourite at Chantilly. Messidor (IRE) was 3rd in the 32 field Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot. Rocky Sky (IRE) is a very interesting purchase for American financier Peter Brant. A last start winner at Navan in April over 1 1/4 miles indicates that distance is not a problem.
Higher Truth is the only Irish bred that has done her racing in the US with a last start 3rd in the G1 Belmont Oaks to Santa Barbara who did not make the trip over. The US bred fillies have their work cut out for them.

The other bug races are on dirt. The G1 Test Stakes for 3YO fillies over 7 furlongs and a real interesting G1 Whitney Stakes for 3yo+ over 1 1.8 miles which has attracted only 5 runners, 4 of them have G1s.

G1 SaFontratoga Derby.

Cheers for the Red, White and Blue....

The winner was State of Rest (IRE), one of the Irish bred runners at nice price of 21/1. But lets take a closer look !

Trained by Joseph O'Brien, had but a single win, that in his initial start at Fairyhouse in Ireland. In his only previous top-level start, he finished fifth, beaten nearly nine lengths, in the G1 Vertem Futurity in his final start as a 2-year-old. State of Rest (IRE), out of the Quiet American mare Repose, was bred in Ireland by Tinnakill Bloodstock and is owned by Teme Valley.

And his sire....

Starspangledbanner (AUS) !!!!!!

Like I said lets cheer for the Red, White and Blue!

Another summer weekend of racing has the spotlight on Arlington Park as what maybe the last time we see the International Turf extravaganza which brought us the first US$1 million race in the US - The Arlington Million.

The ownership of the track is steadfast in selling the track which is more valuable for development that running races.

Such is the support for racing unless there is a casino on the grounds.

The Arlington Million will be run as the Mister D. Stakes with less stakes of $600,000.
We have a couple of European invaders.
In particular one raider should be interest to this list. Last year's second place finisher in the G1 Cox Plate - Armory (IRE), who has three starts since he returned from OZ including a win in the G2 Huxley Stakes at Chester first up. His last start G2 York Stakes 4th should be overlooked as his margin of defeat was only 1 1/4 lengths. He is second favourite for the (sic .6) Million. The other foreign breds are Space Traveller (GB) who should also should not be underrate since he won the G1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. However, the firm favourite is the US based and Domestic Spending (GB) who has won the 6 of 7 in his career 3 straight G1s including the Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park over this 1 1/4 miles distance.

For the G1 Beverly D. A.P. O'Brien has found a spot for his star 3YO Santa Barbara (IRE). Recently bought Lemista (IRE) by Peter Brant should provide plenty competition by US bred Mean Mary is in top form and she could just win her first G1.

The 3yo turf G1 Secretariat Stake for 3YOs, also renamed to the Bruce D. Stakes only has locals entered for its finale. The event has attracted mostly lightly raced up and coming youngsters such as Tango Tango Tango, Point Me By, King of Miami and supplemental entry Ginsburned last maiden winner at Ellis Park. I'm not sure if Secretariat would be impressed....

Quick rundown of the big weekend races.

G1 Beverly D. was won decisively Santa Barbara (IRE) as the Even money favourite. It will be interesting how O'Brien set up her autumn campaign and set her towards the Breeders' Cup. It will be interesting but one thing is for sure is the the filly luvs the US. And with a name like that California in November should be sweet.

G1 Former Secretariat Stakes, was won by Point Me By won by 3 lengths over Tango Tango Tango with Ginsburned a nose off in third. All three mentioned in the preview.

G1 Former Arlington Million was won by longshot Two Emmys (26/1) (English Channel out of Miss Emmy, by Buddha) defeating the 2/5on Domestic Spending (GB) by a neck. Armory (IRE) was disappointing 6th.

At Saratoga the stout 6YO mare Got Stormy (12/1) won the G1 Fourstardave Stks for the second time. She holds the mile turf track record of 1:32.00 and her time of 1:33.09. Not too shabby!
Spendthrift Farms bought the daughter of Get Stormy for US$2,750,000 last year at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale and then consummated a deal to lease her racing rights to MyRaceHorse, adding to a process with Spendthrift that has also included G1 Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year Authentic and two-time champion Monomoy Girl.

This weekend the focus shifts to Del Mar where there are 5 graded races on Saturday and one on Friday and Sunday as well.
The most important is the US$1 million G1 Pacific Classic and G1 Del Mar Oaks.
Saratoga has the G1 Alabama for 3YO fillies over 1 1/4 miles.

A couple of additional notes:

The two 3YO events at Belmont Park, the Jockey Club Derby Invitational Stakes and Jockey Club Oaks Invitational Stakes part of the NYRA Turf Trinity and Turf Tiara were run for the second time and thus were still classified as Black Type. However, the class and the stakes offered will surely place the event in graded class next season.

The second place finished to Yibir, Soldier Rising, a son of Frankel was second in the G1 Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes that served as the second leg of the series. Bolshoi Ballet, the 2/1 favorite who captured the series-opening G1 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes, was fourth. Connections of Yibir are contemplating whether to bring him back for the G1 Breeder's Cup at Del Mar at the same distance of 1 1/2 miles.

The first event on the 2022 Road to the Kentucky Derby was held on Saturday at Churchill Downs.
The G3 Iroquois Stakes was won by Major General at 9/2 who confirmed his fine win in his first start at Saratoga to get automatic entry for the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Santa Barbara winner of the G1 Belmont Oaks and G1 Beverly D at Arlington Park has died after a pelvic injury.

She was such a brilliant filly in what she show in the US.
