One week to the Kentucky Derby....

The big news was Cat 4 Hurricane Laura destructing SW Louisiana.

Just a reminder there is a racetrack known as Delta Downs in that area - 600 horses could not evacuate.

Field for the Kentucky Derby drawn.

18 Starters - So we had an entrant with 0 qualification points. First time that has happened in this crazy year.

We have a new starting gate at Churchill Downs which will be able to hold up to 20 starters. No gaps for the attachment of an extension gate.

3/5on favourite Tiz The Law drew barrier 17. Hmmm got to check how many have from that wide alley. Ahhh There it is! - In all the runnings no one has won from out there!

We have a interesting lot - but the most interesting article I have picked up that is worth a read for the folks in our Commonwealth is about the 33YO Barbadian born trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. who has been able to get NY Traffic into the field. Rags to riches story.... Kind of like Someone from Tennant Creek getting a horse into the Melbourne Cup! Cheers!

Meet Finnick the Fierce, the one-eyed Kentucky Derby horse who once beat heavy favorite Tiz the Law

https://sports.yahoo.com/meet-finnick-fierce-one-eyed-162334030.html

Many thanks acacia alba Thumbs Up Gotta love an underdog & from a $500 mare Clap
Video & pics in the link.

Arnaldo Monge can recite the date — April 22, 2017 — like he would any other important birthday or anniversary.

Finnick the Fierce." data-reactid="12">It’s the day Monge met a newborn thoroughbred who eventually would be named Finnick the Fierce.

A thoroughbred who eventually would have his right eye removed. A thoroughbred who eventually would finish ahead of one of the best horses in the United States. A thoroughbred who will fulfill several dreams Saturday when he runs in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

“I was in love with him from the first time I saw him,” Monge said.

Finnick the Fierce drew the No. 1 post position and is a 50-1 long shot in the morning line for the Kentucky Derby.

He’s already overcome greater odds.

Monge was a veterinarian for Millennium Farms in Lexington, Ky., in April 2017 when he got a call from Paige Gilster, then a junior at Iowa State University.

Gilster’s mare, Southern Classic, had just foaled a chestnut colt sired by Dialed In. The newborn had a rare condition — a congenital cataract — in his right eye.

Gilster had purchased Southern Classic for $500 from a rescue center in North Dakota. Still a college student, she dreamed of “getting a good foal, working my way up and then selling it to keep trying to build my business.”

Gilster loved the newborn’s conformation but knew the eye condition would make it tough to command a big price in the auction ring.

“He was so big,” said Gilster, who now runs Blu-Sky Stables in Lexington with her father, Jeff. “I’m 5' 8", and this foal was almost at my waist when he was born and had to be 150-plus pounds. I was floored by how gorgeous he was.”

By the time Finnick the Fierce was 6 months old, Gilster knew she was likely out of options. That’s when Monge stepped in, bought the colt for $3,000, and took him to have surgery on his eye at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, where Monge is a doctor.

“As soon as the eye was removed he was a different horse,” Monge said. “He was in a lot of pain for a long time.”

Why did Monge buy the horse?

“I told my wife, ‘Come and see this baby,’” Monge said. “We thought it was one of the nicest babies we’d seen. He had great bones, great leg, great muscle, tone, and definition. In my eyes, he exuded class.”

Monge and his wife, Thena, have 10 horses at their Keene Reverie farm in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Once Finnick the Fierce had recovered from his surgery, the Monges went to Rey Hernandez to begin training him. Monge later sold a 50% ownership share of the horse to Hernandez for his original cost of $3,000.

Tiz the Law, who is undefeated since then and the 3-5 morning-line favorite for the Derby." data-reactid="45">Finnick the Fierce won the first race of his career in June of 2019 at Indiana Grand. He later finished second in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs. The third-place horse in that race was Tiz the Law, who is undefeated since then and the 3-5 morning-line favorite for the Derby.

Gilster said she’s not one to brag about that feat. Finnick the Fierce entered the race at 87-1 odds.

“I don’t want it to come back and bite me,” she said with a laugh. “But I was at that race, and there were tears after getting second in a graded race. It was a heck of a payoff.”

Finnick the Fierce will enter the Derby after a seventh-place finish in the Grade 2 Blue Grass on July 11 at Keeneland.

Monge debated whether to enter the horse in the Derby but eventually left the decision to Hernandez.

“It’s amazing he’s taken us this far,” Hernandez said. “Horse racing is an up-and-down thing, and you just kind of go one day at a time. …

“We had to be a little bit more patient than with everybody else and let him do things his way. We didn’t make him do anything he didn’t want to do, and that the key.
Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

Spectator-less Kentucky Derby was a spectacle to digest...

In the paddock Bob Baffert one of two entrants trained Thousand Words gets spooked and does a cartwheel!!! Breaks his assistant's arm in the process and gets scratched of course!

20 minutes later Baffert's lone entry now, Authentic, from the widest barrier goes to the front on the first turn and turns away the odds on favorite Tiz The Law, for a commanding victory giving the trainer an equal sixth now in the Classic.

Baffert in tears as Johney V. (elazquez) comes to the get roses!

Hughes (Spendthrift Farms part owner of Authentic)  got involved in expanding ownership through an initiative called MyRacehorse.com, which sells microshares in racehorses. The company, of which Hughes is the majority owner, owns 12.5% of Authentic and offered shares in the colt all the way up to post time of the Derby. Before the gates sprung at Churchill Downs, 5,314 shareholders had purchased 12,450 shares in the racehorse at $206 each. MyRacehorse shares were first available only to California residents in 2018 and then became available nationwide beginning in July 2019.

"Yesterday, there were more than 5,300 people who could say they owned a Derby winner," said MyRacehorse.com chief operating officer Michael Behrens, who pitched the concept to Hughes about two years ago. "It's insane when you think about it. That is more winning Derby owners than there has been in its whole 146-year history. Ownership is the best way to celebrate our sport and understand it and love it."

The mare didn't have her own thread on this site so we'll plop the info right here.

G1 Coolmore and G1 Legacy Stakes winner Con Te Partiro (USA) is returning back home to run Nov 7 in the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland and then to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale Nov 9.

Con Te Partiro started her 2YO career at Keeneland 5 years ago where she won her 2YO maiden by 5 1/2 lengths. She has won stakes on three continents - At Saratoga, at Royal Ascot and at Randwick!

In an absolute thriller for the last leg of the US Triple Crown, filly Swiss Skydiver would not be denied in capturing the G1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racetrack, Baltimore today.

Getting a split in the back stretch jockey Robby Alberado let  Swiss Skydiver drive along the fence and got himself in awinning position to outlast the favourite and Kentucky Derby winner Authentic.

Nothing better seeing a filly or mare turn the tables! She was fantastic - nothing less.

Video to come!

Con Te Partiro failed to attain her reserve on a final bid of US$1.9 million during the Nov. 9 opening session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. The 6-year-old Scat Daddy mare Con Te Partiro has been purchased privately by Sheikh Fahad's Qatar Racing for US$1.6 million.

"She's definitely coming back to Tweenhills Stud in England for Qatar Racing," said David Redvers...

The other Australian bred mare Oleksandra, G1 winner here in the US who was also to be sold Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale did not meet the reserve price of US$1,450,000.

Oleksandra finished ninth in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland last weekend.

Hello,
The Germanbred colt Laccario (by Scalo) ran a secondplace in  the Hollywood Turf Cup (Gr.2),
2400 meter at Delmar.

Laccario was the winner of the German Derby in 2019 (150th German Derby at Hamburg) from the Family of Lando, Literat, Lauro, Laroche etc. Btw, his Sire Scalo is a FB of Sound (Check), Laccario himself is quite interestingly bred, 3x3 Laurea (sounds familiar!), 4x4 Surumu + 5x5x5 FB/FS Lando/Liberty.

regards, Ticino

Laccario ran into Arklow (Arch out of Unbridled Empire, by Empire Maker) who has run into form of late. They ran .12 outside the track record.

Nice ride , box seated helps if you have the talent to take advantage of it , timewise very good 2-26+ about the same as Tulloch's time in the / 56 Caulfield Cup , worthy winner imo.

Santa Anita opens its winter/spring meeting on our Boxing Day (they of course don't know much about this holiday) with absolute ripper for the G1 Malibu Stakes for 3YOs over the 7 furlong distance.

Bob Baffert trained Charlatan (by Speightstown), who was disqualified from one of the G1 Arkansas Derby divisions returns. He looked like a monster in his three starts before going amiss with an ankle injury. He will face Nashville (by Speightstown) who has won his three starts also by huge margins. Three other graded winners include Baffert trained Thousand Words, G1 Bing Crosby Stakes winner Collusion Illusion and Independence Hall.

Santa Anita extended the back stretch of their turf course so that they don't have to use the Downhill turf course (abt. 6 1/2 f) which was regarded as a cause for several injuries.

The G1 Malibu Stakes turned out an absolute show case by Charlatan winning by 4 1/2 lengths in a time of 1:21.50. Nashville took the lead at the start but when asked the question by Charlatan as they turned into the straight he waivered and finished 4th. Extreme outsider Express Train finished well for second and Collusion Illusion was third.

Baffert has to now think about whether its worthwhile to send the horse to the UAE or Saudi Arabia. I hope to see him there!
