Bill kelty acknowledges non union members free ride should stop
![]() ![]() ![]() Mr Kelty, due to retire shortly as a Linfox director after 25 years, said he shared concerns about “free rider” non-union members benefiting from union-negotiated pay deals, backing unions being able to strike deals where union services such as training are only provided free to members. how do you have a system where a union like the TWU and other unions provide an incredible range of services, (members) pay for that service and it’s extended free to everybody else? How does that business model work? It’s not a sustainable bargaining business model. It can’t work because people will take the free gift.” |

I get the point MC41 - & Ive always had a sympathetic ear for the Union movement - we need someone to stand up to Corporates
The problem is they don't do themselves any favours putting both Business & Governments over a barrel. This latest NSW railway manning dispute dressed up as a pay dispute is a prime example. Been going on across 2 state governments (LIB & ALP) & STILL going on. Caused absolute havoc for everyday commuters. Abuse of power - full stop. That proposal will just increase that power.

Unions have negotiated insanely high salaries and conditions. Metro Tunnel Project, Trademen earning $350,000, only work in the AM, sit around doing nothing in the PM. This includes $1000 a week site allowance.
Still, not as much as leak detection specialists who charge $450 an hour, work it out, 30 hours a week, 48 weeks a year, $648,000. I wonder how much fake grass vendors make.

Show's I'm not my fathers daughter. I work about 10 hours a week usually and only earn $30 an hour. But what would I do if I fully retired! I can't spend all my time here.

Nowhere near that Whale. There is a little difference though - an employee does not have to put money up front - & can only lose his job as a worst case scenario. Someone in their owns business normally needs to invest considerable money to get up & running....& statistics show they are more than likely going to lose the lot + more in the end. You could also argue a new business owner will be more invested in working harder / longer....not always....but usually. Concept called risk / reward Whale
But yes - i get your point. Train Drivers AVERAGE salary in NSW 130k. Want drivers / guards / toilet facilities on new Metro (driverless) trains to boot. They are the trains that currently have shown need no staff & that are so well liked 30% of passengers have migrated across to using from normal trains I have no problem with wide ranging gttttroup negotiations.....but there has to be some mechanism for the process to be reasonable |

No issue, big risk, most fail, but should realise they are just doing what they must to earn a living, no better than countless other workers/ employees. The sun does not shine out of their azz.
PS I was in small business, much smaller when it finished than when I got in

As a general comment - we seem to have to class of workers in this country. Government / Big business / heavily unionised vs the rest. Have a number of mates now retired on those to dream for Govt schemes . Retire on 85% of your final salary for life.....fully indexed. Amazing how many of them took a short-term (Acting) promotions just prior to retiring.....that becoming the base ![]() Think they are pretty well dead & buried now thank god. |

Should get back to the accord, something Kelty had a major say in.
Was instrumental in getting the economy back on track, there where many versions later in the years, but not as good ( in my opinion)
