2023 So many big names leaving last season’s successful teams. Salary cap pressure or money grabs by the players, I wonder

The big ones so far?
Orlando Brown leaves Mahomes and the chiefs to go to the Bengals Darren Waller & Carr dumped by the Raiders. To the Giants & Saints respectively. They gain Jimmy G & Myers Eagles lose RB Sanders to the panthers. Patriots lose Myers but pick up Schuster Smith from the chiefs |

The Rodgers trade train wreck rolls on, I wonder if anything will actually happen or if we will just end up with an awkward '23 return to Lambeau for the want-away QB?

The problem with the Rodgers trade is that Green Bay think they are in the much stronger bargaining position. I don't think they are.

I'll happily take the awkward return to GB.
I'm switching to the Jets if he actually goes... |

I can understand the Jets not wanting to overpay for him, they can use Denver and Russell Wilson as a precedent for not overpaying for a veteran QB, plus if they don't look like challengers for a Lombardi or Rodgers in the MVP race by mid-season there's every chance he checks out and retires at the end of the season. He just doesn't strike me as a QB who plays with the Brady level of competitiveness.
If I was the NYJ I'd be sticking to something like a 2nd or 3rd round pick this year plus a 1st next year with contingencies built in around Rodgers performance and if he commits to play next season. IMO they would be better suited getting a young guy or capable second-tier QB a bit cheaper and using the picks and extra cap space to build a better squad around him.

they've done the second-tier QB scenario already. It didn't work.
A bit of Rodgers class might get them a division championship at the least. Its over twenty years since they won one. My husband was a Jets fan. |

I was thinking more a guy like Jimmy G, proven to be a solid QB.
Rodgers doesn't strike me as the type of character who could come in and do what Peyton Manning did in Denver, or Brady did in Tampa.

Jimmy G has gone to the raiders.
The problem for the jets is they’ve signed Rodgers’s mates on his recommendation. What happens if he doesn’t go. Get out clauses, perhaps

Six sleeps until the draft and activity still going on.
It seems Arizona are open to trading their third overall pick for a free agent to add to the potential trade of DeAndre Hopkins. Rumor is that Indianapolis may offer the fourth slot to the Ravens as part of a deal to grab Jackson who is running out of options and with the communication that he was offered a guaranteed $200 million (actually $144 million) for 3 years he is not handling this contract negotiation very well. The talk now is that the QB's that have been high on teams priority have fallen down the wish list, with teams not convinced that all the main QB targets are not future franchise QB's. Interesting week coming up leading into draft day. |

A-Rod and JJ both chose to switch to gang green today, officially handing Jordan Love the keys in Lambeau.

I love the colour green.
F*ck Gutekunst. He is a horse's arse, thinking he's done the right thing by the team. If Love succeeds, I'll eat humble pie. But I doubt I will have to. I expect GB to finish fourth in the division next year. GO THE JETS...

Well the last season of Favre they went 13-3 before losing to the Giants in OT in the NFC Championship game, the following season with Rodgers taking over they went 6-10 with only the 0-16 Lions behind them in the division, so it isn't unprecidented even at Green Bay for a team to suffer a regression the first season after replacing the man with the kid.
Typical of someone who supports Man Utd to throw the toys out the cot and change teams because one player leaves.

I'm not changing teams. I hope I'm wrong about Love. But going from God to a question mark is not making me look forward to the season.
I am a massive A-Rod fan and I hope he gets the Jets there. Maybe it will shut up a few Rodgers' critics if he does. My husband was a Jets fan, so I've always had a soft spot for them. They are more or less my reserve grade team. Typical of a ManU fan to throw their toys out of the cot...lol. I have confidence they will get back on top faster than GB will. |

I'm tipping Rodgers floor in New York to be around 6-10 or 5-11, his ceiling a wild card spot, I don't think he has the personality to do what Manning did in Denver or Brady did in Tampa, he's more focused on MVP awards than rings.
Of course Man Utd can turn it around quicker than Green Bay, they've just got to go spend another few hundred million pounds, as the usually do.

Jealous that United have the highest net transfer spend in the world of clubs over the last 10 years (£903 million) for an FA Cup, Europa League and a couple League Cups? No, rather I find it entertaining.

More rumors.
The Titans have done some trading already and they have been very active in the free agency market, but it is being said that Derek Henry wants to move to Buffalo and the Titans might be interested if they can get the right compensation and then use their early first round pick for a running back. I would have thought that the Bills salary cap is close to fill but the next seasons cap does rise $10 million and that might be enough to do the deal financially.

Ok, I get how the draft works but how do the contracts work once a player is picked up in regards to money and length of contract?

All rookie contracts are four-year deals, with extension negotiations
able to begin after the third year. Deals for first-round picks have a
fifth-year option, which the team can exercise after the third year to
make the contract into a five-year pact. In terms of a salary, it’s pretty simple: the higher you get picked, the more money you make. What will the salary be for the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft? The projected contract for the No. 1 pick in 2023 is roughly $41,217,000 in total value, with an estimated signing bonus of $26,976,000 and a 2023 cap of $7,494,000, according to Spotrac. It's a sliding scale. A first round pick 31 gets US$12.75 million. |

The experts were saying a while that the QBs in this draft were not that good. I remember reading one saying he wouldn't be surprised if there were no QBs in the first 5 picks. But reading the draft now I see that QBs are picks 1,2,4,5. So much for experts.

Gridiron is a strange game where one position is so overwhelmingly THE position I wonder how it goes at junior level. There must be tremendous bunfights between coaches and parents on every team from the under 7s up on who plays QB.

A lot of junior QBs end up playing RB or even WR, simply because there is more room in those positions.

RB - half the pay, half the glory, smashed every game - washed up by 30. If coach tried to play me there in the under 7s I'd tell him to get stuffed.

QB is by far the best position and RB is by far the worst.

true...but there is usually only one QB playing in each team, whereas there are two or three RB and multiple WR.
Not everyone gets to play where they want.
