As we will be leasing either US or UK subs for at least a decade and probably longer, I would think these subs will be serviced and recharged in their home base. I wonder if they will be subs that are awaiting decommissioning as they are being replaced and the cost of disposal is prohibitive? They saw Scomo coming? The Greens are just doing what their constituents want them to do, just like the idiotic culture war garbage the far right comes out with and Libs just shrug and say that they have their views and they are entitled to say what they think in our society that respects free-dumbs.

Would have been more prudent to lease the subs in the first place.
Could always have the latest and greatest. Assume aus "builds" its own to appease labor and the unions because its all about the jobs. I would think then Aus could have serviced and recharged them here. If America can trust us to build then servicing would be a doddle.

If Albo becomes PM at the next election will you be suddenly against the submarines as well as unions for wanting Australian jobs?

Actually Bob, the Virginia class subs we are getting dont require refueling in their 30 year lifespan. Just the original rods that the UK I believe are supplying, and disposal at life's end are the issues.

It's going to be much more expensive and take much longer to build them here but we know how keen the Tories are on subsidised manufacturing.

On @RNBreakfast Barnaby Joyce just suggested the ABC should look at a particular story and when Hamish remarked that the ABC obviously has editorial independence from government, Mr Joyce said "not really, we have to pay for you."

Not surprising the entitled Barnyard isn't aware that he as well as the ABC has his lavish expenses covered by the taxpayer,

WASHINGTON, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Leaders of the United States, Japan, India and Australia vowed on Friday to pursue a free and open Indo-Pacific region "undaunted by coercion" at their first in-person summit, which presented a united front amid shared concerns about China. The two-hour meeting at the White House of the Quad, as the grouping of four major democracies is called, will be watched closely in Beijing, which criticized the group as "doomed to fail." "?We stand for the rule of law, freedom of navigation and overflight, peaceful resolution of disputes, democratic values, and territorial integrity of states," U.S. President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a joint statement after the talks. While China was not mentioned in the public remarks by the four leaders or in the lengthy joint statement and a factsheet issued afterwards, Beijing was clearly top of mind. |

It's going to be interesting to read all the sh1t talk from News Corp about Morrison tomorrow.
When speaking of the East West Link here in Vic they said "It cost us more than a billion dollars to not build a road". Well now it's cost us $66 billion to not build submarines. I'm sure they'll go real hard

Chalk up yet another HUGE FAIL to the current Government and appalling Health Minister Greg (by name and by nature) Hunt in particular. People with disability lost trust in the federal government after the Department of Health failed to adequately communicate changes to the vaccination rollout to the community, as a damning report found the plan to vaccinate NDIS workers and participants was “seriously deficient”. In a draft report from the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability, published on Monday, the commissioners found the federal health department made no genuine attempts to consult with the sector. They also failed to appreciate the unique challenges associated with vaccinating people living in residential disability accommodation. The commissioners said the department’s lack of transparency, particularly around the pivot away from focusing on people with disability as the department focused on residential aged care, meant those affected could not protest or challenge the changed plan. That communication failure was “a serious departure from the standards of transparency” to which the government should adhere, the report said, and potentially contributed to vaccine hesitancy. “Not surprisingly, the failure to communicate the decision in a timely manner caused many people with disability to lose trust and confidence in the Australian government’s handling of the vaccine rollout,” the commissioners said. |

The current Coalition Government, though more particularly the totally riven National Party, don't want to know. Though Matt Canavan was moved to claim it's b*llsh*it:
Methane
emissions higher than previous estimates in Queensland's Surat Basin CSG region A
world-first aerial survey of Queensland's main coal seam gas (CSG) region has
found methane emissions considerably higher than some previous reports. Key points:
University
of New South Wales Associate Professor Bryce Kelly — who helped co-ordinate the
international research into Queensland's Surat Basin region through the United
Nations Environment Programme — described the survey's findings. "In
terms of the coal seam gas sector, we are finding that emissions per unit of
gas that's produced is two to three times higher than has previously been
estimated," Dr Kelly told ABC's 7.30. "It's
really important that we measure methane accurately — the rate of methane
is increasing [globally] at a record pace. "Within
our region of study, coal seam gas contributed about 30 per cent of the total
emissions." |

A federal ICAC with sharp teeth and adequate funding will be a big winner for Albo. Morrison/Murdoch clearly hates the idea but they will probably cave before the election - do the right thing ... if you're backed into a corner with a gun aimed at your head. But nobody will believe Morrison if he promises a federal ICAC. They know he will do his utmost to delay, underfund, equip it with milk teeth laws etc.

Taiwan to Australia: Please help Scotty from stunts and rorts: No worries cobber, should have a nuclear sub in the water in about 25 years. But I have to warn you I dont hold a periscope mate. Taiwanese Foreign Minister warns his country is preparing for war with China, asks Australia for helpTaiwan's Foreign Minister warns his nation is preparing for war with China and urges Australia to increase intelligence sharing and security cooperation as Beijing intensifies a campaign of military intimidation. Key points:
Dozens of aircraft from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) have flown sorties into Taiwan's Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) since Friday, prompting the self-ruled island to scramble its own military jets. Speaking to the ABC's China Tonight program, Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu declared that if the PLA were to launch an actual strike, his democratic state would be ready to repel it. "The defence of Taiwan is in our own hands, and we are absolutely committed to that," Mr Wu has told the ABC's Stan Grant in an interview to be broadcast on Monday evening. |

The apparently pre-ordained tilt at Federal politics was always the reason for his decision to resign from the State legislature.
He made the same decision last year (to stand in Eden-Monaro) before recanting after a heap of flack from within his own party and getting assh8led from his position as Speaker. Gilmore is his stamping ground given his State electorate is Bega, so it can hardly be viewed as being parachuted in.
