Oneone isn't the only thread starter.
Every few days we get A Current Affair/ Today/ Sunrise etc. bringing up the cost of living and how to save money at the checkout. Has anyone ever really looked at the amount of rubbish people put in their shopping carts? We...two of us...used to budget $200 a week for housekeeping, which included topping up our Opal cards. We had two cats at the time, who took up a good portion of the budget in kitty-litter, expensive tinned food...because one cat would chuck up the cheap stuff...'cat-milk', which apparently doesn't upset their gut as much as cow milk...and the odd special treat. The human element ate pretty well, regardless. I've always been a good cook...though getting very lazy in my older age...and could make a cut of meat go several delicious ways for several meals. Also, a whole chicken could do at least three imaginative dinners. We are not huge dessert eaters...ice cream or a tub of yoghurt or a home-cooked apricot turnover etc. on the odd night. Chocolate was an essential, but biscuits were only rarely bought...and quite often went stale before being eaten. We love vegetables and home-made soups, and have a pasta dish at least twice a week. It's not Masterchef, but it's bloody good, nevertheless. The cats died a year ago, but we kept the budget at the same level, expecting to need it to cover inflation. Apart from lettuce and celery prices going through the roof, we haven't noticed any major changes. Just the odd ten cent jump on a few items. So, the old cat money gets used on bought lunches, instead. I'm not talking petrol prices. Purely groceries. Has anyone really noticed a major rise in their grocery outlay? Do you now have to stop putting five bags of lollies, four cartons of Magnums, three multi-slabs of coca-cola and a huge leg of lamb...in compressed plastic packaging, making it look revolting...in your shopping trolley? Or is inflation purely at the petrol pump and on a mortgage? |

So firstly, i will not criticise you for starting a thread. Some members on here have been known to do just that. Even though it doesn't excite me as a topic to banter - I respect your position as a tight arse.
Secondly, I rarely do the shopping - however i would be surprised if most were not were not feeling some upwards movement in the supermarket. A lot of comment suggests that is the case Thirdly, i could have saved you a quid when your two kitty's were alive. We too had issues getting Pickles - our very close to 22 year old Tabby - food she would eat (now in pussy heaven). Only a few certain flavours of the Felix pouches would suffice - which were not cheap. However she too loved her milk - & couldn't keep it down. Now cats are all lactose intolerant - so that is the reason. The special cat milk you can buy is basically just lactose free milk - with maybe a few extra minerals / vitamins to make it sound better. So Pickles was more than happy with the human lactose free milk which i believe is the same price as full cream milk - only at about 20% of the price pro rata. Actually now I think of it she also loved those "Creamy Treats" - & for her last few months I would hand feed her as many as she would eat a day just to try to keep her going . When she stopped eating them i knew it was time

My life motto has always been 'waste not, want not...' But if I am in the mood for lobster, then I'll buy lobster. I actually prefer bugs and prawns, so it rarely happens. Not wasting money...being a tight arse...has enabled me to travel extensively and stay in good hotels. Cigarettes, alcohol and running a car are the biggest money-wasters. I've never done all three and therefore always had spare cash in my pockets. Also, I was a successful punter. My oldest sister is always crying poor-mouth. I told her to stop smoking and she wouldn't be always broke. It's a choice. You only have one life, so invest in it wisely. |

Hello Sunshine won't believe the part where I said I don't drink alcohol...
that swig of Bailey's, for a raspy throat, totally confused her... |

Should be a thread on saving money in these times. One of the best ways is to buy in bulk when non-perishables (or those that take make months so reach expiry) go on half price sale. Why would you pay full price for things like body wash, shampoo, soft drinks, breakfast cereal etc.

My married daughter is always asking if I want to go to Costco and buy bulk...but I can't think of anything I need in bulk. We don't even drink soft drink, except for the occasional lemonade or ginger beer, in humid weather. We make our own iced tea.
I use soap...usually obtained from hotels I stay in...not body wash. We both use Palmolive shampoo, which can be bought on special or at the Reject shop, for about two-fifty. I'm not into all that expensive 'name' products. I do not eat cereal...my god they can charge for that human horse-feed. I do eat multi-grain bread, though...and quinoa salads. My one luxury is Quilton 4-ply toilet paper. You can't buy it in bulk, except from Amazon. The shipping would negate any savings, so I pay Coles' price. No big deal. |

not sure any of my 'issues' are issues.
Most cereals are revolting. Crunchy nut cornflakes are reasonable, but not first thing in the morning. I'd rather have bacon and eggs, spaghetti carbonara, or asparagus on toast for breakfast. Something that gets the brain cells working. You have all been conned by body wash. It only cleans your wallet out. |

It's been proven to not clean properly. Too chemical and perfumed, as well. Unless you have skin problems, it is always better to use soap. |

I can honestly say almost everything I buy at Woolies has markedly increased in the last year or two with biggest spikes since the floods. $10 - $12 items are now $2 dearer e.g. Int. Roast coffee & Fancy Feast dry

I'm happy to buy chocolate on special. Fruit and veg has gone up and meat. Even Ice Cream had a raise recently but one tub goes along way. Only really use caned tomartos and beetroot and they aren't too bad yet.
It's petrol which gets me. I drive to mum's and back and in the next two weeks will do the trip four times due to singing twice at church on the weekends away (children stepping in to mind Mum while I'm away). That's about a months driving so the tank will get filled earlier than usual. Noticing I'm not filling it to the brim now. I cut off at a certain point when I think I have enough.

The point wasn’t about body wash at all (or any of the other products I mentioned which you dismissed). You can buy almost any essential at up to 50% off and in bulk. Yes, even your 4-ply toilet paper.

I have to hide it from the daughter who lives with me. She'd eat it for breakfast. I still have at least one Darrell Lea nougat egg in the cupboard...and when we stayed last week at Meriton, they had bags of mini eggs on the counter, encouraging those checking in to help themselves...so we did. To several. |

At about 10yo, I had all my wrapped Easter presents under my bed ready for delivery on the day. Plan went awry when I'd eaten the lot by then & conveniently can't remember how I got out of that one or even if I did

what's ACA TIger. Can't work that one out.
I like the Rookie but they have it on too late. Didn't mind Lego masters they built some wonderful things this season. Don't mind Master Chief but I get to hungry watching those cooking shows. And would never have the patience to go to their skill. All the big brother, mafs and love island things should be banned. They are just horrid TV.

I struggle with most Easter Egg Chocolate. A lot of it is very poor quality - esp. the sugar laden sweet stuff.

Big Brother is epic, this year.
A psychologist's dream.... totally enjoying Tim and his antics... But hoping Reggie wins. She's going blind and her son has cystic fibrosis. Still has the best attitude and common sense of anyone on any reality program. A sweet person. You can keep MAFS, The Bachelor, Masterchef, Lego Masters and The Voice...most of the singers sound the same and the judges are irritating. To each their own. I love anything that tests the human spirit. |
