Sale supposed to start at 6pm but still no updates Confused Imagine all the breeders with rellies expected/hoped to win earlier, their yearlings going thru' tonight & the odd unexpected rags to riches story. All part of the luck of racing & breeding Smile

Of the 4 million dollar Vinnie colts sold two years ago, 3 are geldings and the other is yet to trial. optimism is a strange beast.

Also noted Brett Thompson buying most of the cheaper lots.  Does he get them ready for Ready to Run Sales?

Apolgy to Vinnie. Only one of those colts was his. The other three were Not a Single Doubts. The Vinnie is the gelding Enviable running in maiden company at the Gold Coast.

Vinnies two million dollar colts from 2020 (4yos) are both geldings. To be fair Zarastro has won $118k, and Journalism $71k including a C1 at Newcastle.

He has three 2yos and to be fair, Godfather is going ok. Will he be the one? The other two are unraced.

Maybe the Optimists will be rewarded.

Tried to talk Danny Williams into buying Lot 1249: a nice neat filly by All Too Hard from a winning Encosta mare.  Said I'd take a fair share if he did.

So she sells for just $20k!  Hope Danny was the winning bidder, if not I'll be totally p1ssed.

Danny must surely have left early.  Cry  Unless the X-rays and/or scope were awful suspect he'll now be as disappointed as I am.

But then again a penny saved is a penny earned.  So for me it's on to the Classic sale where I've only got three earmarked.

Actually I think some of the big colts are maybe raised to softly.  So no damage can be done to the yearling product but also they aren't tested and when they are in the rough and tough world of racing they don't have the grit to do what they are bred for.  Could be totally wrong.  But a good colt can make or break a studs season.

Many with the top pedigrees don't bring the money and turn out great despite a blemish or two.  So why do so many top bred horses seem less than competitave in the races?

Highly likely furious, I've often thought that & even had a el cheapo yearling who'd clearly never been tied up, obviously for fear of damaging herself Confused

Who were Millions' biggest spenders?

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott wasted little time bolstering their stable's numbers for 2023 with the training duo involved in the purchase of more than 30 yearlings at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Hall of Fame trainer Waterhouse is no stranger to sourcing a star from the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, with stable stars Farnan, Vancouver, Alligator Blood, Global Glamour all purchased from the iconic January auction.

The stable's highest-priced purchase was $1.4 million for Lot 445, the Justify colt out of champion race mare Sunlight, while they also teamed up with McKeever Bloodstock and Watership Down on a $1m Too Darn Hot filly, out of two-year-old Stakes winner Enbihaar.

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace also used the sale as a chance to replenish their stocks, with the operation also involved in at least 30 purchases.

Maher paid more than he ever has on a yearling when he placed a winning bid of $2.5m on the I Am Invincible x Booker colt, while he also parted with $800,000 to secure the Pierata filly out of his former star sprinter Loving Gaby.

China Horse Club, in conjunction with Newgate Farm and Trilogy Racing, grossed more than $10m with 18 purchases.

And while they may not have bought the same volume of horses, Coolmore's Tom Magnier, James Harron's Colts Partnership and USA-based Tammy Rigney all opened the purse strings.

Magnier spent $4.95m on three yearlings, including the sale-topping $2.7m I Am Invincible x Anaaheed colt.

With a similar aim of unearthing a stallion prospect, Harron's Colts Partnership made five purchases totaling $4.75m, while Rigney bought two I Am Invincible fillies for a collective $3.2m.

LEADING BUYERS (ranked by total spend - does not include purchases in conjunction with other bloodstock agents and syndicators)

$10,100,000 - China Horse Club/Newgate/Go/Trilogy - 18 lots

$7,995,000 - Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Racing/Kestrel T'breds - 21 lots

$7,340,000 - Ciaron Maher Bloodstock - 13 lots

$5,165,000 - Mulcaster Bloodstock/Chris Waller Racing Pty Ltd - 14 lots

$4,960,000 - Yu Long Investments (Australia) Pty Ltd - 8 lots

Noticed that as well Gay.

Has anyone got any idea why Exceed and Excel is such a good broodmare sire. It is not just today, he has been showing up for sometime. I have had a look at his extended pedigree and nothing sticks out to me.

Never thought much of his female line apart from sire Danehill (and we had plenty of those).  It seemed to be  alot of American blood which had little to do with our bloodlines here in Australia.

The only thing I liked was Lomond.  And maybe he's the key but deep in his pedigree are a few interesting lines but so far back even I ignored it.  But he has now even had a grandson win the Melbourne Cup despite the speed which we know he imparts to a pedigree.

And if you look at results overseas rarely a week goes by without a few or many winners out of Exceed and Excel mares so it not restricted to Australia.

Nice little story about the Fosters.  You could not meet a nicer person than Joanie. Very pleaseed for them.

What a week it has been for Richard Foster who operates Yarramalong Park Stud near Kalbar in Qld. He is the man behind the purchase of stallion Better Than Ready (BTR) from the racetrack to his transition as a syndicated sire at Lyndhurst Stud near Warwick.
Richard sold 14 BTR’s at this years Magic Millions Sales for an average of 140k, top price 530k bought by a syndicate including China Horse Club & Newgate.
BTR just sired the winner of the Magic Millions 2yo Skirt The Law and the QTIS Stakes race Alpine Edge (which he has part ownership in). An amazing effort to beat the progeny of Hunter Valley studs whose stallions stand at fees far greater than 24k which is BTR’s current price and whose broodmares are on another level of breeding and performance.
I got to know Richard very well when I was a part owner of another one of his BTR stock Paredo. She won 2 races and was Stakes placed. His knowledge of breeding and the physiology of horses is phenomenal. His unwavering belief in Better Than Ready being a great sire of 2yo’s was there from the very beginning.

As furious pointed out Lomond may be the key. Hails from the brilliant crepe myrtle female line and along with danehill would have to be a strong influence.
