And those numbers are understated. Israeli troops amassing on the Lebanese border anticipating Hezbollah getting involved is not good.

Hard to watch the images. Reminds me of the Bob Dylan line "I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children, and it's a hard rain gonna fall." Just awful stuff, without any hope.

The UN partitioning it, just made it official. And the British were happily relieved of their mandate.

At the time, the Jews were about a third of the population of Palestine and owned around 6-7% of the land. Arabs constituted the majority of Palestine's population and owned about 20% of the land, with the remainder held by the Mandate authorities or foreign landowners.

It doesn't excuse what they're about to do to other people though.

Its only my opinion here. But the Jews have been hammered for hundreds of years, by many kings and countries. Used as money lenders and then wiped out so the debt didnt have to be repaid. Its goes on and on. Now they have a place they call home, and they are strong, and heaven help those who come against them. And I can understand that.

For three full years, the U.S. Congress ignored the plight of the Last Million. Only in June of 1948 did Congress pass a bill authorizing the admission of 200,000 DPs, but barring the immigration of the 90% of Jewish survivors who, having spent the war years in the Soviet Union and/or the first months of the postwar period in Poland, were accused of being Communist sympathizers or operatives. No such “security” measures were written into the law to guard against the entry of the thousands of Nazi collaborators and war criminals who had lied their way into the displaced persons camps. The outcry against the discriminatory nature of the first Displaced Persons Act was such that it was amended, two years later, to remove the restrictions on Jewish immigration, but, by this time, after three to five years in camps in Germany, the vast majority of survivors, unwilling to spend a day more in Germany, had immigrated to Israel, illegally before May, 1948 and then legally after Israel declared, and President Truman recognized, its independence
