    Posted: 22 Apr 2019 at 3:05am
Hi everyone,

Happy Easter to you all. I hope it has been a good one.

I'd like to ask you all a question: what methods do you use to find the Melbourne Cup winner.

Do you factor in:

* weight

* Lead up form - finishing off their races

* Record at 3200m /or close to 3200.

* Any other relevant information

One thing I have found is that usually Melbourne Cup winners will be hitting near their peak in their final lead up race before the Cup.

Thoughts?

Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

Weight and breeding.. You can either run the 3200 or not.
Track condition - if it’s a good 3 those euro imports a lot will struggle due to jarring up

This one never fails:

You add up the total of starts the field has had, divide by 24 (number of runners in field)
You then print off a chart with 24 squares.
Flip a $2 coin (has to be $2) and whichever square it lands is your winner.

Has to have some connection to WA and double your bet if trained by one of the Cummings.

Simple - Lightly raced, unexposed Godolphin or Williams owned with a low weight. Most likely a 3 year old.

One thing I've noticed is that highly rated horses getting in with a light weight.

Example: Cross Counter had a rating of 123 when he ran 2nd in a G2 in Europe. His Cup weight was 51kg..yes he was a 3 yr old. But has he had that rating before Cup weights were released then he gets more weight. It's almost a case of...Cup winners beating the handicapper which is what the aim is.

Almandin had a rating of 117 after his win in the Bart Cummings (2500m) but had 52kg. Had he had a rating of 117 before Cup weights were teased then he is probably in the higher weight region.

"Placings in the Caulfield Cup usually win the Melbourne Cup," was an age-old adage.

That theory in recent times has not worked.

The last Melbourne Cup winner to run in the Caulfield Cup as part of its lead-up campaign towards the Cup was Viewed in 2010 when he ran 10th.

The last Melbourne Cup winner to place in the Caulfield Cup as part of its lead-up campaign towards the Melbourne Cup was Delta Blues who ran 3rd in 2006.

Johannes Vermeer placed in the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup in 2017.

Apart from the info above...the Caulfield Cup is bit the guide it used to be for the Melbourne Cup in recent times. Historically - yes. Recently - not so much.

Who would like to prepare a table of the last prep run before winning the Melbourne Cup? For say, the last 30 years. Big smile

Great work Jamal, a credit to your time and effort, a common theme here in the preps. of the Oz and NZ winners , very much all started their preps with a gradual increase as they got deeper in to their final goal, it's the way we have done it for well over a 100 years, may it always stay the same.

I've won on last two after not getting a winner for years in the Cup. (As an each way very low scale punter)

Will stick with low weight, up and coming types, not the established horses.

They seem To be be weighted very generously compared to talent.

I appreciate the kind words everyone. I thank you for that.

The info I posted - I did this a few years ago and all I have done is update it as each new Melbourne Cup winner is unveiled as in..each new winner.

The initial work took me 3 days and I did this way back in 2011. All i did was copy and paste the info into this thread :-)
