And wow - Shammy the horse is gorgeous! Is he a liver chestnut? (Not sure what you call it in the US; black sorrel?)
Shammy Davis was PA bred and registered as dark brown, though his mane lightened up in the Spring and Summer fooling lots of folks about his coat. A son of Belmont Stakes winner TEMPERANCE HILL out of a SHAM mare, he was  named playfully for the black entertainer Sammy Davis, Jr, who was best known for being a member of singer/actor Frank Sinatra's rat pack.  He ran 13th out of 14 in the 1997 Kentucky Derby won by SILVER CHARM.  Trained by Nick Zito up to the Kentucky Derby, he was not Grade 1 class.Confused Ran better at Grade 3 and allowance until retired.  Sadly, we lost him to colic several years back.Cry

As AA posted, that's me at about 60 years old. Maybe a little older, not sure.  Mrs. Shammy made me give up riding when I reached 70.Cry  Got your recommended book by AKA Nino Culotta, but just haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Too busy and exhausted from riding the tractor and getting hay in for the winter.  Don't know if anyone in OZ was aware of this, but every entrant in 2025 Kentucky Derby had the great VA bred SECRETARIAT in their pedigree. Absolutely amazing, as many, including me, thought he was a failed sire.

SD its the same with many of the Aussies now residing in stakes pedigrees.  They didn't even get big books of mares or win championships but now Carbine, Trenton and Darebin are in every pedigree out there.  While plenty of others join them.  I'm glad the big red horse is also still making his presence felt. THe champs that speak to our souls should live on in the breed.

Furious:  Agree.  Now retired, we still have three pensioned mares well into their twenties and very healthy and youthful.  One is the the 5th granddaughter to SECRETARIAT'S full sister SYRIAN SEA. She never produced anything of any racing consequence other than some sturdy hurdlers, but her ancestry continues to be an over the fence conversation starter for us.  She bares a remarkable resemblance to the great distaff granddam and producer Something Royal though her sire came by AMERICAN CHANCE that was a small sturdy sprint line of HAIL TO REASON. One of my treasured books is WINNING TRAINERS - Their road to the top, by Australian Ross Staaden, B.V.Sc. published back 1991. His interviews with Tommy TJ Smith and Fred Kersley are very enlightening. D. Wayne Lukas is the only trainer still surviving of the four interviewed in the book.  The shame of U. S racing, other than Kentucky, is that it has not be able to sustain its ancestral character like Australia and the UK and is expressed in Staaden's book. Your trip to Ascot must have been a real delight, especially by the fact that the Queen was present.

Good luck with her.  Hope your not freezing down there. Would you believe Emma got out yesterday and decided the river was the place to be.  Wet dog and daughter!  Not the right weather for it.

That's a picture of my three dogs prior to Elvis.  Smokey as a youngster and the part heeler at the back is Coal (the childrens pet when growing up - he rounded them up on multiple occasions) and the red setter Baron we only had for four years before a throat cancer killed him.  Each had a personality.  Baron was goofy but when my eldest wandered the fields up on the farm he was with her.  She'd disappear and I'd look out the window and there she would be off on an adventure with Baron by her side.  He also bought up some wild kittens who ended up the gentlest cat I ever knew.  A case of nurture over nature.

Coal we got after coming to the city again.  He was very much my husbands dog.  The poor boy was very much my childrens guardian.  He also used the heel snap to keep them in line.  The number of times one would come in and say Coal bit me - without a sign of blood on there heels - he was very careful about it.  His favourite place was on top of the trampoline.  He'd grab a bit of wood from the BBQ in the backyard and sit up there chewing while I'd be hanging out the washing.  I never forget the day he flew past me and took a flying leap and went straight through the mesh.  He'd burnt a few holes grabbing some still warm embers for a previous chew.  The next day he had forgotten and took a flying leap onto nothing (we'd taken the cover off of course the previous day).  He landed stiff legged and looked at me with such a questioning look I spent the rest of the day laughing.
This was my Christmas present the year he'd died so I spent a lot of time in tears with Michelle thinking she'd done the wrong thing!  But it was the best present ever until the year Chris was dying they gave me a quilt (made by a friends Mum) with pictures of our life together all over it.  That sent me off again!

Pip (Kats dog prior to Gemma) and Smokey at the back and Gooba and Bella at the front.  The family dogs visited with their owners.  Gooba and Bella are still alive although both are closing on 14 years one.

Smokey as a pup with old boy Coal.  THis would happen quite alot.  Smokey loved to nip Coal on his hind legs and Coal would put him in his place - the old kennel.
