Let's all try the Martingale betting system this Saturday at Flemington.
The martingale system is a betting strategy made popular in 18th century France. In its simplest form, the punter doubles his bet until he wins, then he restarts with the original stake and so on. We'll start at Flemington with an initial stake of $5 for the win. Race 1. $5 Race 2. $10 Race 3. $20 Race 4. $40 Race 5. $80 Race 6. $160 Race 7. $320 Race 8. $640 Race 9. $1,280 That's if you lose all bets. However, once you achieve a win, you reset to $5 again. For example, one might achieve the following bets: Race 1. $5 Race 2. $10 Race 3. $20 Race 4. $40 Race 5. $80 WIN !! Race 6. $5 Race 7. $10 Race 8. $20 Race 9. $40 Post your tips and results in this thread to compare how we went. For example; Race 1. $5 Bet LOST. Bank -$5 Race 2. $10 Bet LOST. Bank -$15 Race 3. $20 Bet LOST. Bank -$35 Race 4. $40 Bet LOST. Bank -$75 Race 5. $80 Bet WIN $280. Bank +$205 Race 6. $5 Bet LOST. Bank +$200 Race 7. $10 Bet LOST. Bank +$190 Race 8. $20 Bet LOST. Not sure I'm a fan of the strategy. Chase mentality will kick in, and if you have not backed a winner heading to the last races, the temptation will be to load up on the favourite. |

From my perspective, there is no real value to the system. For example, I marked Octane as the bet of the day, and was probably lucky my stake under the system was up to $40.00. However, had I backed the previous winner then a stake to $5 only on my best bet makes little sense.
I used to like Big Al's way of staking. From memory he had four different staking plans - Big Bets and the like. As a losing punter, any edge helps I guess. Thanks for sharing the system though, and hope you had real money bets!
